How to Fix PHP Warnings and Errors Showing on a WordPress Site

Learn how to diagnose and fix WordPress PHP warnings, deprecated notices and critical errors without exposing debug details to visitors.

Fix a PHP warning or critical error in WordPress without exposing it to visitors by working from a backup or staging copy, logging the complete failure, identifying the component named in the path, and isolating one change at a time. Keep WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY disabled on a public site; a visible stack trace can reveal file paths and other implementation details.

The reliable sequence is: protect the site, enable private logging, reproduce the problem, classify its severity, test the suspected plugin, theme, custom code or server runtime, verify every important site function, and then turn production debugging off.

Start with a safe repair plan

WordPress Developer Resources gives the right first rule: “Before making any modifications to your website, verify that you have either utilized a staging environment or taken an appropriate backup of your site.” A backup should include the database and the files, especially wp-content and wp-config.php. A staging copy is safer for code edits, PHP-version changes and plugin testing because a failed experiment does not take the live site down.

  • Use staging whenever possible: copy the site, reproduce the error there and make the change on staging first.
  • If staging is unavailable: make a fresh, restorable backup and schedule the work for a low-traffic period.
  • Record the starting state: note the active theme, recently changed plugins, PHP version, WordPress version and the URL or action that triggers the message.
  • Do not edit blindly: a warning’s file path, line number and request context are more useful than a cropped screenshot.

Understand what the message means

The label determines urgency, but it does not by itself identify the fix. WordPress and PHP messages generally fall into these groups:

Message type What happens First response
Notice or deprecated The request often continues, but code is using an outdated or non-ideal behavior. Log it, identify the owner and update or replace the code before a future PHP or WordPress change turns it into a failure.
Warning A runtime operation failed or returned unexpected data. The page may load with missing content or a broken feature. Use the path, line and stack context to find the plugin, theme or custom code; then update, configure, replace or correct that component.
Fatal error or “critical error” PHP stops executing the request. The affected page, administration area or entire site may be unavailable. Use Recovery Mode, the fatal-error email or filesystem access to disable the suspected component and regain control before investigating further.

A warning on one form is a different incident from a fatal error on every page. Also record the scope: one URL, one logged-in action, all front-end pages, wp-admin, REST or AJAX requests, or scheduled jobs.

Enable private WordPress logging

During diagnosis, put these constants in wp-config.php, above the line that says WordPress has stopped editing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
define( 'WP_DEBUG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_LOG', true );
define( 'WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY', false );

WP_DEBUG enables WordPress’s debugging behavior. WP_DEBUG_LOG writes WordPress-generated errors to wp-content/debug.log unless a different path has been configured. WP_DEBUG_DISPLAY set to false keeps those messages out of HTML responses, so visitors do not see paths, queries or stack details. A server’s PHP error log may contain additional entries, so check it with your host as well.

Use a plain-text editor and preserve the existing quotes, semicolons and encoding. Do not add the constants a second time with conflicting values; the later definition may hide what you intended. If the site uses a configuration system or environment variables, apply the equivalent settings there instead of creating duplicate entries.

After saving, load the exact page or perform the exact action that failed. Then open wp-content/debug.log and capture the complete entry, including the timestamp, error level, message, absolute or relative path, line number and any stack trace. Clear or rename an old log only when you have retained it for comparison; an old entry can be mistaken for the current failure.

Read the log as a map to the owner

The most valuable line usually names a path such as wp-content/plugins/example-plugin/..., wp-content/themes/example-theme/..., a custom mu-plugin, or a WordPress core directory. The directory tells you who owns the code; the line number tells you where PHP noticed the problem. A core file in the trace does not automatically mean WordPress core is defective: a plugin can pass invalid data into a core function, and the first visible failure may occur downstream.

  1. Copy the complete message. Preserve the error class, exact wording, path, line and stack trace.
  2. Identify the request. Note the URL, form submission, REST endpoint, AJAX action or cron task that generated it.
  3. Map the path to a component. The first recognizable plugin, theme or custom-code directory is your initial suspect.
  4. Check timing. Compare the first timestamp with updates, PHP changes, configuration edits or new content.
  5. Reproduce twice. Confirm that the same action produces the same entry and distinguish a persistent fault from a one-off warning.

Do not “fix” a warning by deleting the line named in the log. That line may be where an invalid value is detected, not where it was created. A stack trace and the input that triggered it are needed before changing code.

Use a controlled isolation sequence

Change one variable at a time. Updating or deactivating several plugins together makes it impossible to know which change solved the problem and can introduce a second incompatibility.

1. Update the named component

Check whether the plugin or theme has a release compatible with the site’s current WordPress and PHP versions. Read its change notes and back up first. On staging, update only that component, clear relevant caches and repeat the failing request. If the warning disappears, test the rest of the site before deploying.

2. Deactivate it temporarily

If no compatible update exists, deactivate the named plugin on staging and reproduce the request. A warning that disappears confirms a strong relationship, but it does not prove whether the defect is the plugin itself or an interaction with another component. Re-enable it and test with the next suspect when you need to narrow a conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Test for a plugin conflict

Leave the suspected plugin active and deactivate other non-essential plugins one at a time, testing after each change. For a larger site, use a staging clone or a plugin conflict-testing feature that changes the view only for your account. Keep a written matrix of component, state, request and result so you can reverse every change.

4. Test the theme path

Switch on staging to a current, unmodified default theme. If the warning vanishes, inspect the original theme’s templates, hooks and bundled libraries. A child theme can also introduce the error, so test the parent and child separately where practical.

5. Check custom code and mu-plugins

Review snippets added through a custom plugin, a must-use plugin, a child theme or an application-specific integration. These files may remain active even when ordinary plugins are deactivated. Roll back the smallest recent change and retest rather than replacing an entire codebase.

Recover from a fatal error or locked-out dashboard

Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2 (2019). When WordPress detects a fatal PHP error during a regular page load, it can send the administrator a recovery link and pause the failing plugin or theme for that session. Follow the link, note the component named on the screen, and update or deactivate it from the dashboard. Recovery Mode is a way back into the site, not proof that the paused component is safe to leave installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the recovery email or link is unavailable

  1. Ask the host whether a server-level PHP error log identifies the same path.
  2. Use SFTP, SSH or the host’s file manager to make a reversible change.
  3. For a suspected ordinary plugin, rename its directory under wp-content/plugins, for example from plugin-slug to plugin-slug-disabled. WordPress will treat it as unavailable.
  4. For a suspected theme, rename its directory so WordPress can fall back to an available default theme. Do not remove the only theme without ensuring a fallback exists.
  5. Reload wp-admin and the front end, inspect the log, and restore the directory name once you have a controlled test plan.

On multisite installations, network-activated plugins and network-level configuration can affect every site. Coordinate changes with the network administrator and test an affected site as well as the network dashboard.

Check PHP and WordPress compatibility

An update can expose code that worked under an older PHP runtime, while changing PHP can expose outdated plugin or theme code. Compare the server’s PHP version with the requirements stated by the current WordPress core, active theme and each relevant plugin. Also compare the server error log with debug.log; a host may report extensions, memory exhaustion or startup failures that WordPress cannot log.

  • Do not assume “newer PHP” is the complete fix. The failing component may need its own update, replacement or code correction.
  • Do not downgrade production as a first resort. If a temporary rollback is unavoidable, use a host-supported, time-limited staging or maintenance plan and schedule the compatible code update.
  • Check required PHP extensions. A missing extension can look like a plugin defect even when the plugin files are intact.
  • Check command-line and web PHP separately. On some hosts, the PHP version used by a shell command differs from the version serving web requests.

After any runtime change, test anonymous and logged-in requests, media handling, payments or forms, REST and AJAX calls, and scheduled events. A home page that loads is not sufficient verification.

Investigate memory-limit failures

Memory-related messages commonly appear as a fatal error or warning and may affect only a heavy import, editor screen, image operation or scheduled task. Check the PHP memory limit reported by the host and the WordPress memory settings, then compare them with the operation that failed. Increasing a limit without finding the component consuming memory can hide a leak and shift the failure to a different request.

  1. Record the exact memory message and the request that triggered it.
  2. Check whether the failure began after a plugin, theme, PHP or content change.
  3. Repeat the request with non-essential plugins disabled on staging.
  4. Inspect large imports, image processing, unbounded queries and recursive hooks in the responsible component.
  5. Ask the host whether the account, PHP worker or container has a separate process limit.

Make any limit change through the host’s supported configuration, document the old value, and retest under realistic traffic. Do not publish a universal memory number: available limits differ by host, plan and server configuration.

Rule out corrupted WordPress files

If the path points to WordPress core and the failure persists with plugins and themes isolated, verify that core files match the distributed checksums and that the server can read them. A failed update, incomplete transfer or filesystem permission problem can corrupt or omit a file. Restore clean core files from a trusted WordPress package or the host’s backup without overwriting wp-content or wp-config.php unintentionally.

Use the database and file backup to compare the affected installation with a known-good copy. If only one file differs, replace the file through a controlled deployment and repeat the test. If multiple files have unexpected changes, investigate the deployment process and account security before treating the symptom as a normal compatibility bug.

Use deeper debugging tools only off production

For a reproducible defect that ordinary logs do not explain, WordPress documents several deeper options:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Debugging plugins: useful for inspecting hooks, queries, scripts and environment details, but keep their output private and remove or disable them after diagnosis.
  • PHPUnit: appropriate for automated tests around custom plugins, themes or integrations.
  • WP-CLI: useful for listing, activating and deactivating components and for creating plugin test scaffolding without relying on a broken browser session.
  • Xdebug: provides step debugging so you can inspect variables and call paths in a local or staging environment.

These tools can expose credentials, request data and internal paths. Restrict access, use non-production data where possible and never leave a debugger attached to a public site.

Deploy the fix and verify the whole site

Once the change is understood, deploy the smallest reversible fix. Keep the log entry, the change record and the rollback point. Then test the functions that matter to the site rather than only the URL that first showed the warning.

  • Anonymous front-end pages, including the page that failed.
  • Logged-in dashboard access and the affected editor or settings screen.
  • Forms, registrations, searches, uploads and any checkout or account workflow the site uses.
  • REST API and AJAX requests used by blocks, editors or interactive features.
  • Media generation, feeds, sitemaps and integrations.
  • Scheduled tasks and background queues after their next run.
  • Cache purges and a fresh request from a separate browser or monitoring location.

After verification, set WP_DEBUG back to false on production and remove or disable temporary display or tracing settings. Preserve logs only under the site’s retention and privacy policy, restrict their permissions and rotate or delete them when they are no longer needed. Leaving debugging enabled can expose implementation details and fill storage over time.

Common situations and the correct next move

Symptom Likely starting point Safe next move
A notice appears after a plugin update but pages still load. Outdated code in that plugin or an interaction with the current PHP/WordPress version. Log the full path, check for a compatible release and test the update on staging.
Only one form or editor screen fails. The plugin, theme template or custom hook handling that request. Reproduce that action with other plugins isolated and inspect the request-specific stack trace.
The entire front end shows a critical-error screen. A fatal error in a recently changed plugin, theme or shared custom code. Use Recovery Mode; if necessary, rename the suspected directory through filesystem access.
The dashboard is unavailable but the public site works. An admin-only hook, dashboard widget, editor integration or memory-heavy screen. Use the fatal-error email or filesystem access, then test the dashboard request separately.
The error began immediately after a PHP change. Code incompatible with the new runtime or a missing PHP extension. Compare requirements, inspect the server log and update or replace the failing component rather than changing PHP repeatedly.
Core files are named and the problem survives isolation. Corrupted or incomplete files, permissions, or a deeper server issue. Verify checksums, restore clean files from a trusted source and ask the host to inspect the runtime.

Choose a fix by risk, scope and reversibility

When several remedies are possible, prefer the one that is narrow, reversible and easy to verify. A configuration toggle on staging is lower risk than editing vendor code; a plugin update is usually easier to maintain than a local patch; deactivation can restore service quickly but removes functionality; a rollback restores a known state but may reintroduce an older vulnerability or data incompatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Option When it fits Main trade-off
Update A maintained release addresses the compatibility problem. The update can change behavior, so regression testing is required.
Configure The component supports a documented setting that avoids the failing path. The underlying defect may remain and return with another input.
Deactivate You need to restore access or prove ownership of the error. The feature disappears until a permanent fix or replacement is ready.
Rollback A recent deployment clearly introduced the failure and a known-good backup exists. Older code can have security, PHP or data-compatibility limitations.
Correct code You own the custom code or the maintainer has supplied a verified patch. It requires code review, tests and a repeatable deployment process.
Replace component The owner has abandoned it or no compatible release exists. Migration can require data conversion and new integration testing.

Judge every option against six questions: How severe is the message? How broad is its scope? Who owns the code? Can the change be reversed? Is the work happening on staging or production? What verification coverage will prove it is fixed?

When to involve your host or a developer

Contact the host when the server log shows worker crashes, missing extensions, permission failures, resource exhaustion or a PHP version you cannot change. Contact the plugin or theme maintainer when the trace consistently points to their code and no compatible release or documented configuration resolves it. Bring the exact message, path, line, timestamp, PHP and WordPress versions, reproduction steps and a list of changes already tested. That evidence avoids guesswork and prevents repeated toggling on the live site.

For custom code, a developer should reproduce the defect on staging, add a regression test where practical, review the stack trace and deploy through version control or another repeatable process. Do not send a public debug screen containing credentials or customer data.
