A Postfix message such as connect to mx.example:25: Connection timed out means the SMTP client could not complete a TCP connection or receive the remote server’s initial response before its limit expired. The default smtp_connect_timeout is 30 seconds. Start by checking DNS, IPv4/IPv6 routing, and every outbound firewall or provider policy; change credentials only after the server is reachable. If direct delivery on port 25 is blocked, configure an authenticated relay on the submission port documented by your provider.

What a Postfix SMTP timeout actually means
Postfix’s SMTP client must establish a TCP connection to the next-hop server and receive that server’s response. The smtp_connect_timeout parameter is defined in the Postfix smtp(8) manual as “The Postfix SMTP client time limit for completing a TCP connection, and for receiving the remote SMTP server response.” Its documented default is 30 seconds. That is a configuration limit, not a promise that every remote server will answer within 30 seconds.

A line such as connect to mx.example:25: Connection timed out is a failure before successful SMTP commands. The useful first suspects are an unreachable address, a broken route, a blocked egress policy, an address-family problem, or a destination that silently drops packets. Authentication credentials, sender policy, and message content are normally evaluated later.
Timeout versus refusal and authentication failure
- Connection timed out: no TCP connection or initial server response completed before the client limit. Packets may be filtered, routed incorrectly, or dropped.
- Connection refused: the host was reached, but the destination port actively rejected the connection or no service was listening. This is a different fault from a silent drop.
- SMTP authentication failure: TCP and SMTP negotiation succeeded, but the server rejected credentials or authorization. Changing passwords cannot repair a timeout that happens before authentication.
- TLS handshake timeout: the TCP connection succeeded, but TLS startup did not finish. Postfix has a separate
smtp_starttls_timeoutfor this stage.

For example, connect to mx.example:25: Connection timed out points to direct-to-MX delivery on port 25. A line naming a relay on port 587 or 465 indicates a submission configuration instead. Do not diagnose a relay as though it were an Internet MX.

Resolve the destination from the Postfix host
Run DNS checks on the same server that runs Postfix, not only from a workstation. For a recipient domain, inspect its MX records with
dig MX recipient.example, then resolve each returned hostname withgetent ahosts mx.exampleor your distribution’s equivalent. Note every address. If the log shows an IPv6 address, treat IPv6 as a separate path; a server can have working IPv4 while its IPv6 route is broken.Special offer. Test the exact TCP path
Test the destination and port from the Postfix machine.
nc -vz mx.example 25checks a direct-MX connection. For an authenticated submission endpoint using STARTTLS, useopenssl s_client -connect smtp.provider.example:587 -starttls smtp. For implicit TLS on port 465, useopenssl s_client -connect smtp.provider.example:465. Run IPv4 and IPv6 separately where supported, for examplenc -4 -vz mx.example 25andnc -6 -vz mx.example 25.A timeout in the same test confirms that the problem is below SMTP authentication. An immediate refusal proves that the host was reached but the service or policy rejected the socket. A successful TLS test proves reachability and TLS negotiation, but not that Postfix’s credentials or sender permissions are correct.
-
Inspect every firewall and egress boundary
Check the host firewall, cloud security groups, outbound network ACLs, NAT gateways, and any organization-wide egress filter. Then verify whether the hosting provider or ISP restricts outbound TCP port 25. A rule can allow inbound web traffic while silently dropping outbound SMTP. A 2026 troubleshooting guide from Policyd.org identifies cloud-provider port 25 blocking as a common cause and recommends a smarthost when direct delivery is unavailable; treat that as secondary guidance and confirm the current policy with your own provider.

Compare destinations and address families
Try every MX address returned for the recipient domain. If one address works and another times out, the failing server or route is specific to that address. If all IPv6 attempts time out but IPv4 succeeds, investigate the IPv6 default route, firewall rules, and upstream transit before changing Postfix behavior. If every domain times out, suspect local or provider egress policy rather than a recipient-domain outage.

Confirm the intended delivery model
Direct Internet delivery connects to each recipient domain’s MX on port 25 and normally requires no SMTP login. Submission through a relay uses the relay provider’s hostname, port, authentication method, and TLS mode. Mixing the two models—for example, testing a provider’s port 587 while Postfix is configured for direct MX delivery—can lead to misleading conclusions.
-
Review timeout and retry settings only after the path is understood
Do not increase
smtp_connect_timeoutmerely to make a blocked path wait longer. A longer value can hold queue workers and delay other mail. Change it only when the route is known to be slow and the provider or network administrator documents a different limit. Diagnose a TLS-startup delay withsmtp_starttls_timeout, not with the TCP-connect setting. -
Requeue only after correcting connectivity
Inspect deferred mail with
postqueue -p. After fixing the route, firewall, or relay configuration, request another delivery attempt withpostqueue -fand watch the log for the same queue IDs. Follow your distribution’s permission model; queue-management commands generally require root or the Postfix administrator account.
Fix direct-to-MX delivery on port 25
Remove a local egress block
Review nftables, iptables, firewalld, or another host firewall for an outbound rule covering TCP destination port 25. Also check container or virtual-machine network policies if Postfix runs inside a guest. Permit only the traffic your policy requires, reload the firewall, and repeat the TCP test from the Postfix host. A successful test should complete a connection or show an SMTP banner; it should not remain silent until the client timeout.

Verify cloud and ISP restrictions
Many providers restrict new accounts or entire network ranges from opening outbound port 25 to reduce abuse. Security-group changes on the virtual machine do not override a provider-level block. Ask the provider whether port 25 egress is restricted for the specific instance, region, and IPv4 or IPv6 address, and follow its documented unblock process. If the restriction cannot be removed, use an authenticated relay instead of repeatedly retrying direct delivery.

Repair an IPv6-only failure
When logs show an IPv6 destination and IPv4 tests succeed, inspect the server’s IPv6 route and upstream firewall. Confirm that the advertised IPv6 address is assigned to the correct interface and that return traffic is allowed. As a temporary operational measure, an administrator can configure Postfix to use IPv4 only with inet_protocols = ipv4, then reload Postfix, but do this only after confirming that IPv6 is the failing path and understanding the loss of IPv6 delivery. Restore dual-stack operation after the route is repaired.
Handle a destination-specific outage
If one MX address times out while another responds, leave Postfix’s normal MX selection and retry behavior in place while contacting the recipient’s administrator. Do not hard-code an arbitrary IP address: MX records can change, and certificate or policy checks may depend on the hostname. If all MX addresses for a domain fail, the message may remain deferred until a later retry succeeds.
When a relayhost on port 587 or 465 is the right fix
A managed relay, also called a smarthost or authenticated submission provider, is the normal alternative when direct port 25 delivery is unavailable or when you want the provider to handle outbound reputation, rate controls, and Internet-facing retries. Obtain the exact hostname, port, authentication requirements, certificate expectations, and supported address families from that provider.

STARTTLS submission
Port 587 normally begins as SMTP and upgrades the connection with STARTTLS. Configure the relay hostname and port exactly as supplied, set the provider’s required TLS security level, and enable the provider’s documented SASL authentication method. Protect the credentials file with the ownership and permissions required by your distribution, then run postmap if the provider’s instructions use a hashed password map. A successful connection test with openssl s_client -starttls smtp confirms the network and TLS stages; it does not replace an authenticated delivery test.
Implicit TLS submission on port 465
Use implicit TLS only when the relay explicitly requires it. Postfix’s official parameter reference documents wrapper mode for SUBMISSIONS, formerly called SMTPS, and requires smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt or stronger. The documented pattern is:

smtp_tls_security_level = encrypt
smtp_tls_wrappermode = yes
relayhost = [mail.example.com]:submissions
The brackets suppress MX lookups for the relay host in this configuration. Follow the provider’s exact hostname and port notation; some providers document a numeric 465 service instead of the submissions service name. Do not enable wrapper mode for a provider that expects STARTTLS on port 587.
Understand Postfix retries, MX fallback, and deferred mail
Postfix can try the next network address listed for an MX host. If no usable address remains, it defers the message and leaves it in the queue for a later delivery attempt. Therefore, one timed-out connection does not necessarily mean the message is permanently lost. The queue entry and subsequent log lines show whether another address was attempted.

Preserve the queue ID while testing so you can verify that the same message moves from repeated connection failures to successful delivery after the network correction. Avoid deleting the queue simply to clear the visible error; deletion removes the message rather than fixing its route.

Every external domain times out on port 25
Test a known-good MX and inspect outbound rules. If the same host times out everywhere while web traffic works, a provider, ISP, security group, or NAT policy is the leading suspect. Request an unblock or configure a relay on the provider’s submission port.
Only IPv6 destinations time out
Compare nc -4 and nc -6 results, inspect the IPv6 route, and check both host and upstream firewall policies. Use an IPv4-only Postfix setting only as a deliberate temporary workaround.

Port 587 works, but direct MX delivery does not
This pattern indicates that the submission provider is reachable while direct port 25 is filtered or unavailable. Keep the relay configuration, including its authentication and TLS mode, and stop testing direct MX delivery unless the provider removes the restriction.

The TCP test succeeds, but Postfix still logs a timeout
Compare the test’s hostname, resolved address, and port with the Postfix log. Postfix may select a different MX address or address family. Check chroot or container DNS, service-specific firewall rules, and whether the test was run from the same network namespace. Then distinguish a TCP timeout from a TLS-startup timeout by locating the exact stage named in the log.
The remote server refuses immediately
A refusal means the destination was reached. Verify that you are using the correct port and hostname, that the provider has enabled the service for your account, and that the destination is not intentionally rejecting your source address. Increasing smtp_connect_timeout will not change a refusal.
The connection completes but authentication fails
Move on to the provider’s SASL username, secret, authorization scope, and TLS requirements. Check credential-map permissions and the exact relay hostname. This is a separate SMTP-stage problem and should not be treated as a network timeout.
Post-fix verification checklist
- Resolve the relay or recipient MX from the Postfix host and record the addresses selected.
- Complete a TCP test on the exact port used by Postfix.
- For submission, complete the provider’s required TLS mode: STARTTLS on 587 or implicit TLS on 465.
- Confirm that Postfix’s active settings match the intended model with
postconf -n, paying particular attention torelayhost, TLS security, wrapper mode, and address-family settings. - Place a controlled test message in the queue, monitor its queue ID, and verify a successful SMTP response in the log.
- Flush deferred mail only after the successful test, then confirm that old queue entries leave the deferred state.
How to prevent future timeout incidents
Document which domains use direct MX delivery and which use a relay, including the provider’s ports and TLS mode. Monitor outbound port-25 reachability from each production region, and test IPv4 and IPv6 independently. Keep cloud egress rules, NAT paths, and host-firewall changes under change control. Alert on a sustained rise in deferred messages rather than on a single transient timeout, and retain queue IDs and destination addresses for troubleshooting. Review the relay provider’s quotas, rate controls, reputation policy, and logging so that a network fix does not conceal a separate submission limit.
The practical rule is simple: a Postfix connection timeout is usually a path problem. Prove DNS and TCP reachability from the mail server, identify whether IPv4, IPv6, port 25, or a firewall boundary is responsible, and then choose direct delivery or an authenticated relay deliberately. Tune timeout values only after the route is known to work, and treat TLS-handshake and authentication errors as separate stages.
