To edit an Arma 3 mission or addon PBO, make a backup, unpack the archive with PBO Manager, change the needed files without altering their relative paths, then pack the working folder into a new PBO. Preserve the original prefix and metadata, deploy the rebuilt file in a test environment, and inspect the Arma 3 RPT log before replacing a live mission or mod.

What a PBO is and what PBO Manager does
A PBO is the archive format Arma 3 uses for missions, addons and many mod components. It can contain configuration files, SQF scripts, images, models and other assets. The files are not meant to be edited in place like files in an ordinary folder; the normal workflow is to extract the archive, edit a working copy, and create a new PBO.

The current pboman3 project describes PBO Manager as a tool to open, pack and unpack ArmA PBO files. Its feature list includes archive preview, extraction and packing, opening PBOs produced by Mikero tools, integration with Windows Explorer, GNOME Files and KDE Dolphin, and metadata supplied through pbo.json or $PBOPREFIX$. That makes it suitable for a one-off edit in a graphical interface as well as a repeatable build process.
Prepare a safe working copy
Do not experiment on the only copy of a shipped mission or addon. Copy the original .pbo to a separate work directory and retain the untouched file. If a rebuilt archive has an incorrect prefix, missing file or damaged path, the backup is the quickest way to restore the known-good version.

- Keep the original PBO read-only or in a separate backup location.
- Choose a short local work path, especially when using scripts or older command-line tools.
- Have an editor that can preserve the file type and encoding used by the project. A text editor is sufficient for
description.ext,config.cppand SQF files; image, model and audio changes require the relevant asset tools. - Know where the rebuilt file belongs: a mission PBO goes in the appropriate mission location, while an addon PBO belongs under the relevant mod’s directory structure.
Changing a file’s contents is usually safe when its name and relative location remain unchanged. Renaming a script, moving an image or changing directory capitalization can break a reference elsewhere in the mission or addon even when the edited file itself is valid.
Install PBO Manager
Windows installation
Use the project’s installer or download the manual Windows binaries from its Releases page. The project README states that Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2019 is required; without it, Windows may report that vcruntime140.dll is missing. Install that runtime before troubleshooting the application itself.

On Windows 11, the README says the Windows 10 instructions still apply and recommends the MSIX package when you want immersive-menu integration. If you use the portable or manual binaries instead, you can still open PBOs from the application or associate them with the program through normal Windows settings.
Linux AppImage installation
Download the Linux AppImage, open a terminal in its directory, make it executable, and start it:

Unpack a PBO with the graphical interface
- Open the source archive. Start PBO Manager and open the copied
.pbo. The preview lets you inspect the archive before extracting it, which is useful for confirming that you selected the intended mission or addon. - Choose the unpack or extract action. Select the program’s unpack command and choose a destination folder. The destination should become a normal working directory containing the archive’s files, not another nested PBO.
- Confirm the extracted layout. Check that expected top-level files and directories are present. A mission commonly includes
description.ext, scripts and mission assets; an addon may include configuration, models, textures and a namespace directory. Do not add an extra parent folder merely for convenience if that would change the path that Arma 3 expects. - Record the original prefix. Before editing an addon, inspect its prefix metadata if present. Keeping that namespace unchanged is the safest choice for a small modification.
For an older scripted workflow, the archived console utility documents:
pboconsole.exe -unpack myfile.pboThat command belongs to the legacy PBOManager console project, which is deprecated in favor of the current pboman3 project. Use it only when maintaining an existing script that depends on it.
Edit mission and addon files without breaking references
Editing description.ext in a mission PBO
After extraction, open the working folder’s description.ext in a text editor. Make the required change, save the file in the same location, and leave every referenced path relative to the mission root unless the change intentionally moves an asset. The same approach applies to init.sqf, function files, dialog definitions, configuration files and other scripts.
Keep filenames and directory names exactly as they were, including capitalization. If a script calls scripts nc_start.sqf, moving it to a different directory or changing the spelling means the call no longer resolves. If you do need to move a file, update every reference that points to it and check the resulting paths before packing.

Editing addon content
Addon PBOs often depend on a namespace prefix and on paths declared in configuration. A texture, model or script can be present in the archive yet fail at runtime if its config points to a different path. Treat the extracted folder as a project tree: edit the smallest necessary set of files, avoid unrelated renames, and retain metadata files at the root.
Use a diff or change list
For a repeatable modification, keep a short list of changed files or use version control outside the PBO. This makes it possible to reproduce the build, identify an accidental deletion and apply the same edit to a later upstream release without guessing what changed.

Preserve the PBO prefix and metadata
What the prefix controls
The prefix is the internal namespace used by Arma content. It acts as a path definition for resources inside the PBO, so an incorrect value can produce missing-config, missing-texture or script-resolution errors even when all files were extracted correctly. For a small edit, preserve the source archive’s prefix rather than inventing a new one.
Formatting a $PBOPREFIX$ file
The Community wiki specifies that $PBOPREFIX$ is a text file with no extension in the addon root. It must contain exactly one namespace line, with no final newline and no surrounding whitespace. Examples include:

PBO Manager uses the $prefix$ filename convention described by that documentation. Do not add a second line, quotation marks or a trailing space. Editors that automatically append a newline can violate the stated format, so verify the file with an editor that shows end-of-file characters or use a method that writes the single line exactly.
Using pbo.json
PBO Manager also supports metadata in pbo.json. Leave an existing project file in place unless you understand the fields it controls. If both a project convention and a prefix file are present, follow the layout already used by that addon and check the packed result rather than deleting metadata to make the folder look simpler.
Choosing a prefix for a new addon
For a new addon, choose a namespace that matches the intended folder structure and is unlikely to collide with another mod. The examples above show the difference between a short addon name and a longer path under a mod namespace. The important requirement is consistency: the prefix, config paths and deployed directory should describe the same namespace.
Repack the edited folder
- Close files that are being written. Save the editor changes and ensure no build script is still generating or deleting assets.
- Select the working folder in PBO Manager. Use the pack action on the folder that contains the files and metadata at the expected root. Selecting a parent directory one level too high creates an unwanted nested path in the new PBO.
- Choose a new output filename. Write the rebuilt archive to a separate output location or use a clearly marked test name. Keeping the original PBO untouched makes it easy to compare and roll back.
- Inspect the packed archive. Reopen the new PBO in PBO Manager and verify that the edited file, required assets and prefix metadata are present. This catches an incorrect source folder before you launch the game.
The legacy console syntax for packing is:
pboconsole.exe -pack ./my-pbo-folderAs with its unpack command, that console project is archived and deprecated. It remains useful for an existing automation script but is not the preferred starting point for a new setup.

Deploy and validate in Arma 3
- Install only the rebuilt copy in a test location. Put a mission PBO in the mission location used by your test profile, or place an addon PBO under the test mod directory. Do not overwrite a production server’s copy until the test succeeds.
- Load the mission or start the mod. Exercise the feature you changed, not just the main menu. Open the edited dialog, run the changed script and visit areas that load modified textures or models.
- Read the RPT or log output. Look for missing files, unresolved config classes, bad paths, prefix mismatches and signature errors. The log often identifies the exact resource name that Arma attempted to load.
- Compare against the original when necessary. If the rebuilt archive fails, restore the untouched PBO to confirm whether the packaging change or the content edit introduced the problem.
This validation procedure is operational guidance; no independent runtime benchmark or game test establishes that every project-specific PBO will load after repacking. Your mission’s dependencies, signatures and server configuration still determine the final result.

The application will not start on Windows
If Windows reports a missing vcruntime140.dll, install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2019 required by the project README, then restart PBO Manager. If you installed an older package, obtain the current supported runtime rather than copying a DLL from an unrelated download.
The packed PBO contains an extra directory level
This usually means the parent of the intended project folder was packed. Reopen the archive and inspect its top level. Pack the directory that directly contains the mission or addon files, not the directory that merely contains that directory.
Scripts or textures are reported missing
Compare the failing path in the RPT log with the extracted tree. Check spelling, capitalization, slashes and relative depth. Restore any accidentally omitted asset and update references only when a move was intentional.
The addon loads but classes or resources cannot be found
Inspect the prefix and configuration paths. A missing, renamed or incorrectly formatted $PBOPREFIX$ file can change the namespace even when the archive appears complete. Restore the original one-line prefix and repack.
The server rejects the rebuilt file
Signature or key policy can differ between a shipped PBO and a locally rebuilt one. Test with the project’s normal signing and deployment process, and read the server log for the precise signature complaint. Do not assume that successful extraction implies that a modified archive remains accepted by a server enforcing signatures.

The game works locally but not on another machine
Check that the same PBO, dependent mods and directory structure are installed on both systems. A local installation may be finding an unmodified copy of a resource elsewhere, masking a missing file in the rebuilt archive.

PBO Manager is the most direct choice when you want a graphical open, preview, extract and pack workflow on Windows or Linux. Other utilities fit different jobs:

Compare a candidate on five practical points: operating-system support, graphical versus command-line operation, handling of prefixes and metadata, compatibility with the specific archive variant, and whether you need extraction only or both extraction and repacking. A tool that can extract an archive is not automatically the right tool for creating a deployable replacement.
Licensing before redistribution
Technical ability to unpack and repack does not by itself grant permission to redistribute the result. Bohemia Interactive’s official FAQ states that users may unpack PBOs and repack their content, including modified content, in their modification’s PBOs, subject to the original data license. The FAQ gives APL-SA material as an example that must retain the same license when modified.
Read the license shipped with every third-party addon before publishing or distributing a rebuilt PBO. Preserve required notices and attribution, and keep the modified archive within the permissions granted for that specific source. A private local test and a public redistribution can have different obligations.

- Original PBO copied to a safe backup.
- Correct PBO opened and extracted to the intended working directory.
- Only necessary files edited; relative paths and capitalization preserved.
- Existing
