Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePS3 error 80028F10 usually indicates that the console’s video-output settings do not match what the game or TV supports. A community-maintained error-code reference attributes it to a 16:9 game being launched while the PS3 is set to 4:3; Sony’s manual confirms how to correct the connection and output settings, though it does not identify this specific error code. Start by checking the selected connection, then choose a supported resolution and correct the aspect ratio.
What PS3 error 80028F10 means
The message reads: “You cannot play this game at the current video output setting (80028F10).” The PS3 Developer wiki’s community-maintained code reference says the mismatch can occur when a game requires 16:9 but the console is configured for 4:3: PS3 Developer wiki error-code reference. Sony’s manual explains the video-output controls, but does not confirm this code-specific diagnosis, so treat the 16:9/4:3 explanation as secondary-source guidance.

Fix the video-output settings
- Open the video output menu. On the PS3, go to Settings > Display Settings > Video Output Settings.
- Select the connection you are actually using. Choose HDMI, component, composite/S-Video, or the relevant available connection to match the cable plugged into the TV. Sony notes that available video modes vary by connector and region. See the Sony PS3 video-output settings manual.
- Choose a mode your TV supports. With HDMI, you can allow the PS3 to adjust the resolution automatically when the HDMI device is turned on, or select supported modes manually. Sony lists 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 480p for NTSC, and 1080p, 1080i, 720p and 576p for PAL; the available choices depend on the connector, region and TV.
- Correct the aspect ratio if needed. If the console is set to 4:3 and the game requires 16:9, change the setting to match the game. The community code reference specifically recommends matching the connector and using 16:9 for composite or S-Video connections.
- If HDMI still produces the error, try a supported lower resolution. A secondary walkthrough suggests testing a mode such as 720p. This is general troubleshooting advice, not an official Sony fix for error 80028F10: Technipages PS3 video-output walkthrough (December 7, 2018).
If changing resolution leaves the screen blank
If the new resolution is unsupported, Sony says the PS3 should return to its previous resolution after a while. If the screen remains blank for more than 30 seconds, turn off the system, then hold the front power button for at least five seconds to restart it. Sony says this resets video output to standard resolution. Once the picture returns, repeat the setup and choose a mode supported by the TV.

What to check before replacing anything
- Confirm that the connector selected in Video Output Settings matches the physical connection to the TV.
- Choose only resolutions the TV supports; available modes vary by connector and NTSC/PAL region.
- Check whether the game expects a 16:9 display setting rather than 4:3.
- Do not begin by buying a cable or repair part. The available guidance points to a settings mismatch and does not establish hardware replacement as the remedy.
