If your PS4 shows an elevated-temperature warning or its power indicator pulses red, turn it off and let it cool before using it again. Then improve airflow, check that the vents are clear, and try again. If it keeps overheating, stop troubleshooting and contact PlayStation Repairs.
What a PS4 overheating warning or pulsing red light means
Sony identifies a pulsing red power indicator as overheating. Its guidance is direct: “Turn off the console and wait until it cools down.” An elevated-temperature message also means you should switch the console off and allow it to cool before restarting. How to fix PS4 overheating safely

Turn it off and let it cool
Shut down the console and wait until it has cooled. Do not keep playing through a temperature warning or repeatedly restart it while it is hot. Sony does not specify a fixed cooling time, so wait until the console has cooled rather than relying on a set number of minutes.

Move it to an open, ventilated position
Place the PS4 where air can circulate around it. Sony’s safety guidance says to keep the system at least 10 cm (4 in) from a wall. Do not put it in a closed cabinet or other cramped space where heat can build up, cover it, or place it on a long-fiber carpet. Guidance can vary by model series; check the safety guide for your specific PS4 when model details matter. Check and clean the vents externally
Make sure the air vents are not blocked. If you see dust accumulated in the vents, Sony recommends removing it with a low-powered vacuum cleaner. Turn off and disconnect the console before cleaning, and limit the cleaning to the accessible vents; Sony’s guidance does not establish internal disassembly as a user fix.

Restart once it is cool and ventilated
After the console has cooled and its placement and vents have been checked, turn it back on. If the temperature warning or pulsing red indicator returns, or it shuts down again, stop using it and contact PlayStation Repairs and hardware support.

When to stop using the PS4 and unplug it
A temperature warning calls for shutdown and cooling. Stop using the console and unplug it if it behaves abnormally, makes unusual sounds, produces an unusual smell, or becomes too hot to touch. Sony’s safety guidance advises against continuing to operate the system in these conditions.

What not to do
- Do not keep playing through a warning. Shut down and allow the console to cool.
- Do not block airflow. Avoid covered consoles, closed cabinets, narrow spaces, and long-fiber carpets.
- Do not treat an internal teardown as routine maintenance. Sony says the PS4 has no user-serviceable components inside; use its repair route for a recurring hardware problem.
- Do not assume an accessory or software reset will fix it. Sony’s cited overheating guidance supports cooling, ventilation, checking vents, and repair escalation—not cooling stands, external fans, thermal-paste replacement, Safe Mode, or software reinstallation as established remedies.
