PS5 error CE-109506-1 means the console encountered a problem while connecting to PlayStation. Sony does not identify one universal cause for this code, so the reliable fix is to diagnose the connection in order: check PlayStation Network, test the PS5’s internet connection, restart the network, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet, then update the console and escalate if the error remains.

Do not assume that CE-109506-1 proves your PS5, router, or network hardware has failed. It can be caused by a temporary PlayStation service issue, an unstable local connection, network configuration, or a system-software problem.

- If Sony reports an outage or maintenance, wait for the service to recover and try again later.
- If the status page reports that services are operational, continue with the local troubleshooting steps below.
A PSN outage cannot be fixed by changing DNS, forwarding router ports, buying an Ethernet cable, or reinstalling PS5 system software. Because the status page can change quickly, check it immediately before retrying the console.
2. Test the PS5’s internet connection
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Go to Network.
- Select Connection Status.
- Choose Test Internet Connection.
Confirm that the PS5 is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network, or that the correct wired LAN connection is being used. The test can help show whether the console can obtain an IP address, reach the internet, and sign in to PlayStation Network.
If the PS5 is connected to the wrong wireless network, or if the test fails before reaching PlayStation Network, reconnect it through Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection. Sony’s internet-connection setup guide covers both wireless and wired setup.
3. Restart the PS5, modem, and router
A full restart clears temporary network and console states without deleting games or saved data.
- Turn off the PS5 completely. Do not leave it in Rest Mode.
- Turn off the router and modem. If you have one combined gateway, turn off that device.
- Wait about five minutes.
- Turn the modem or gateway back on and wait until its normal connection lights return.
- Turn the router back on if it is a separate device, then wait for Wi-Fi or LAN service to become available.
- Start the PS5 and run Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection again.
Restarting is especially worth trying if CE-109506-1 appeared suddenly, other devices also lost internet access, or the router has been running continuously for a long time.

- 10-foot (3 meter) length and included cable tie for ultimate setup flexibility
- Uninterrupted speed and maximum visual performance
- Transmits 4K resolution at 120 Hz and 8k resolution at 60 Hz as specified in HDMI 2.1
- Supports up to 48 Gbps bandwidth
4. Test the PS5 with a wired Ethernet connection
If the PS5 currently uses Wi-Fi, connect it directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. This is both a possible workaround and a useful diagnostic test.
- Plug one end of the cable into the PS5’s LAN port.
- Plug the other end directly into the router or gateway.
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
- Select Set Up Wired LAN, then choose Connect.
- Run the internet connection test again.
If you need to rule out Wi-Fi, a Cat 6 Ethernet cable for PS5 is the simplest way to test the console over a wired connection. It is a diagnostic aid, not a guaranteed fix: it will not resolve a PlayStation Network outage or a problem with your internet provider.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Interpret the result this way:
| Result | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Wired works, Wi-Fi fails | The wireless path is the likely area to investigate. | Move the PS5 closer to the router, reduce obstacles and interference, and review the router’s Wi-Fi configuration. |
| Both wired and Wi-Fi fail | The issue may be PSN-side, router or ISP-related, account-related, or a console software problem. | Continue with the restart, configuration, and update checks below. |
| Neither connection works during a PSN outage | The service problem may be external to your home network. | Wait for Sony’s status page to return to normal before making major changes. |
A successful wired test does not prove that a particular PS5 component is defective. It only makes the wireless connection a more likely point of failure. Sony also recommends reducing distance and obstructions between the console and router when troubleshooting wireless problems.
5. Review network settings without making random changes
On PS5, advanced network settings can include the IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy. These settings can matter on unusual home, school, business, or ISP networks, but changing them blindly can make the connection harder to diagnose.
Use Sony’s PS5 network-error guidance as the reference for any advanced change. If you do not know what a setting should be, ask your internet provider or network administrator before changing it.

Conditional settings to investigate
- Router firmware: Check whether the router manufacturer offers a legitimate firmware update. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid interrupting the update.
- Static IP: This may help on some networks, but it requires correct IP, gateway, and subnet information. It is not a universal fix.
- DNS: Sony’s guidance allows trying a different DNS configuration in some cases. DNS changes may help name-resolution problems, but they do not repair PSN outages and do not always resolve CE-109506-1.
- MTU or proxy: Leave these at their normal or automatic values unless your ISP or network administrator gives you a specific configuration.
Do not treat port forwarding as mandatory. Sony lists network ports in its guidance and directs users to their ISP for router assistance, but opening ports is not a guaranteed solution for this error. Unnecessary router changes can create security and connectivity problems elsewhere on the network.
6. Update PS5 system software
Install any available official PS5 update:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose System Software Update and Settings.
- Select the available update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Use only Sony’s official PS5 system-software update instructions and files. Do not download firmware from third-party sites or use a file whose source or name cannot be verified.
If the normal update fails
Sony documents a manual update using a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. The required folder structure is:
USB drive/
└── PS5/
└── UPDATE/
└── PS5UPDATE.PUP
The folder names and official file name must be exact. Download the update file only from Sony’s system-software page, copy it into the UPDATE folder, connect the USB drive to the PS5, and follow Sony’s current manual-update procedure.
A FAT32- or exFAT-compatible USB flash drive can be useful for this advanced recovery step, but it is not a first-line solution for CE-109506-1. If the standard online update works, there is no reason to use the USB method.

Important data-loss warning: PS5 system-software reinstallation is different from a normal update. Sony warns that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the console. Back up any data you can before considering reinstallation, and do not select the reinstallation option merely because the connection error appeared.
Reinstallation should be a last-resort recovery procedure performed only with Sony’s current instructions and after understanding the data-loss consequences. It is not a normal guaranteed fix for CE-109506-1.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Know when to stop changing settings
Escalate instead of repeatedly changing DNS, MTU, proxy, or port settings when all of the following are true:
- PlayStation Network status is operational.
- The modem and router have been restarted.
- The PS5 fails on both Wi-Fi and a direct wired connection, if a wired test is available.
- The PS5 system software is current.
- The error returns after the console and network have been tested again.
At that point, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs and Hardware Support options or the official PlayStation Support contact guide.
Tell support:
- the exact code: CE-109506-1;
- when the problem started;
- whether the PSN status page showed an outage;
- the result of the PS5 connection test;
- whether Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet, or both connections fail;
- which restart and system-update steps you completed; and
- whether the PS5 fails on another network, if you were able to test one.
Do not open the PS5 or replace internal parts based only on this code. CE-109506-1 does not, by itself, establish that the network card, motherboard, router, or ISP is defective. A problem that persists across different networks and after Sony’s documented troubleshooting sequence is appropriate for official support or repair diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does PS5 error CE-109506-1 mean?
Sony describes CE-109506-1 broadly as an error that occurred while connecting to PlayStation. The code does not identify one guaranteed cause. A PSN outage, local Wi-Fi or router problem, network configuration, or outdated system software can all require investigation.
Will changing DNS fix CE-109506-1?
No. DNS changes may help some name-resolution problems, but they do not fix a PlayStation Network outage and are not a guaranteed solution for CE-109506-1. Try them only when Sony’s guidance or your ISP indicates that they are appropriate.
Can an Ethernet cable fix PS5 error CE-109506-1?
No. Ethernet is useful because it lets you compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi. If wired works, the wireless path becomes more likely as the problem area, but an Ethernet cable cannot fix a PSN outage or every possible cause of the error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill reinstalling PS5 system software fix the error?
A normal system-software update should not be confused with system-software reinstallation. Reinstallation deletes all data on the PS5, so it should be a last resort performed only with Sony’s official instructions and after backing up data where possible.
When should I contact PlayStation Support?
Contact official PlayStation Support or use PlayStation Repairs when PSN is operational, the router has been restarted, both Wi-Fi and wired tests fail, and the PS5 is up to date. Provide the error code and the results of each test.
The Bottom Line
CE-109506-1 is a broad PlayStation connection error, not proof of a failed PS5. Check PSN first, restart the network, compare Wi-Fi with a direct Ethernet connection, update system software, and contact Sony if the error persists after those tests. Avoid guaranteed-fix claims about DNS, port forwarding, or system reinstallation.
