What does WS-116439-4 mean?
PlayStation identifies WS-116439-4 as a PS5 error meaning “Unable to connect to the server.” Maintenance is one possible cause, but the error by itself does not confirm a PlayStation outage. PlayStation also points to local connection settings, network equipment, and temporary line congestion as possibilities. How to fix WS-116439-4
Use PlayStation’s sequence, checking service status before changing your home network settings.
- Check PlayStation Network status. Open PlayStation Network Service Status and look for a service failure or maintenance notice. Status can change, so check it when the error appears.
- Reset the PS5 internet connection settings and test the connection. On the PS5, go to Settings > Network > Settings, then select Set Up Internet Connection and reconnect to your network. Afterward, go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection. PlayStation’s support instructions recommend resetting the connection settings and running a test; menu labels may vary with system software.
- Restart the router and modem. Turn both devices off and leave them off for at least five minutes before turning them back on. Once the network is available again, retry the connection.
- Try again later if the error remains. PlayStation says the line may be temporarily congested. Its instructions do not give a guaranteed recovery time.
When should you replace network equipment?
These instructions do not identify a failed router, modem, cable, or PS5, and they do not recommend buying replacement hardware. Work through the checks above before considering equipment replacement; the error alone is not enough to diagnose a hardware fault.
