Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf a PS5 game’s objective, quest, or area will not progress, start with the game’s own recovery options: restart the checkpoint, reload a recent save, or quit and reopen the game. If that does not work, report the issue through the game’s official support route with a reproducible description and any error message or recording. Console launch and Safe Mode troubleshooting is for different symptoms, and some reset options erase user data.
First, identify whether the problem is in the game or on the console
A progression bug usually affects a specific objective, quest, character, or area: an event fails to trigger, an interaction does nothing, or the game does not recognize a completed task. If the game itself will not launch, an update fails, or a save will not sync, that points to a different troubleshooting path.

Before trying fixes, note the game, objective or location, what you did immediately before the problem, what you expected to happen, and what happened instead. Record any exact error message or code. A screenshot or short video can help show the problem; PlayStation’s support guidance asks players to provide error details, a description, steps to reproduce, and visual evidence if possible (PlayStation: How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game).
Try low-risk recovery steps for a blocked objective
- Restart the checkpoint. If the game offers a checkpoint restart, use it and repeat the action that should advance the objective.
- Reload a recent save. Load the nearest manual or autosave from before the issue began. If possible, preserve the current save before taking an action that might overwrite progress.
- Quit and reopen the game. Close the application, launch it again, and reload the relevant save.
- Check the game’s official support information. Look for known issues or instructions specific to that title and use its official bug-reporting route if the problem remains.
These steps are listed by Santa Monica Studio for stuck or cannot-progress cases; other games may have different checkpoint behavior, save options, and support channels. Its support article was published November 9, 2022, and applies as an example of game-specific guidance—not a guarantee that every title has the same recovery tools (Santa Monica Studio: What to do if you are stuck / can’t progress).

Report the bug with details that make it reproducible
If reloading does not resolve the problem, send a report through the game’s official support or bug-submission channel. Do not assume that every publisher uses the same form or accepts reports through the same route. Include:
- The game title and, if known, the game version or recent update.
- The quest, objective, area, or screen where progress stops.
- The steps that lead to the issue, in order, and what you expected to happen.
- What actually happens, including how often it occurs and whether restarting or reloading changes anything.
- The exact error text or code, if one appears.
- A screenshot or video, if you can capture one without losing progress.
Keep the report specific and factual. “The quest is broken” is less useful than a short sequence another player or support agent could try to reproduce.

Use PlayStation troubleshooting for launch, update, or system symptoms
If the game will not start, use PlayStation’s game-launch troubleshooting instructions rather than treating the symptom as an in-game quest bug. The US English support page lists restarting the console, restoring licenses, deleting and redownloading the game, updating system software, and following Safe Mode guidance as appropriate (PlayStation: How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game). These steps address launch and console troubleshooting; they are not a guaranteed fix for a defect in a particular game’s internal progression logic.

PlayStation’s PS5 error-code hub includes examples related to a failed game-update installation and cloud-save synchronization. Check the exact code and its stated context before acting on it (PlayStation 5 Error codes).

Understand Safe Mode options before using them

Its PS5 support hub describes rebuilding the database as scanning the drive and recreating the content database. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), by contrast, delete user data (PlayStation®5 Support).
