If the Esc key itself no longer opens the menu, inspect the game’s control bindings. The right fix depends on the game, platform, and what exactly is missing; there is no single verified cause for every game.
First identify what is missing
Separate these symptoms before changing settings:
- The entire menu is absent: Check whether Esc is still bound to open it, and try the game’s normal menu control if one is shown elsewhere.
- The menu opens, but its settings entry is gone: Look through other menus and check the game’s current support page or patch notes. An option may have moved.
- The settings entry is present, but a particular choice is missing: Check whether it is available only in a loaded save, session, or specific game mode.
These distinctions matter because a missing menu, a changed menu layout, and a missing key binding are different problems.

Check whether the option moved or requires a loaded game
Menu layouts can change. In an EA Forums thread about The Sims 4 pack selection, an accepted reply said the selection had moved to the Marketplace. That is an example of a relocated option, not evidence that other games use the same menu.

Some options also appear only after gameplay begins. Construction Simulator’s FAQ says its control settings are in-game rather than in the start-screen settings, and that a company must be loaded. If you are still at the title screen, load a save or session and look again.

For the game you are playing, check its current support page or patch notes for the option’s location and availability. A guide for another game cannot establish the correct path for yours.
If Esc no longer opens the menu, inspect its binding
Open the game’s control or key-binding screen using its available alternative navigation, then check what is assigned to the menu action. If the binding is blank or incorrect, use the game’s reset-controls or restore-defaults option if available. This may also reset other customized controls, so note any changes you want to restore afterward.

A July 2026 report on The Fun Pimps forum described an Esc binding becoming unset in one game after the player opened vehicle keyboard options. A staff member explained that Esc cancels key recording in that game and said restoring defaults was the available recovery in that report. The thread was later marked “cannot reproduce” pending more information, so this is a reported case—not a confirmed general bug or universal Esc behavior.
PC checks if the menu or controls still fail
If the problem persists on PC, try these checks in order. Construction Simulator’s FAQ recommends several of them for that game; they are sensible diagnostics elsewhere, not guaranteed fixes.

- Update the game through the launcher you use, then check whether the same symptom remains.
- Apply operating-system updates and check for current drivers or configuration software for your input device.
- Verify the game installation through its launcher. In Steam, use the game’s installed-files verification option.
- Check input remapping if you use a controller or specialized device. Construction Simulator’s FAQ notes that Steam Input can interfere with some special input devices; temporarily inspect or disable remapping to test whether it is involved.
If the issue began after changing bindings, focus on the control settings and input-remapping checks. If it began after an update, check the game’s support information for a known menu or control change.

Give support enough detail to distinguish a missing menu item from a broken control. Construction Simulator’s FAQ specifically requests the game version, platform, the place or mode where the issue occurred, actions immediately beforehand, reproducible steps, a screenshot, and logs if available.

- Record the exact game version and platform.
- State whether the whole Esc menu, its settings entry, or only certain choices are missing.
- Give the mode or location in the game and the steps that reproduce the problem.
- Describe what you did immediately before it started, such as changing a binding or opening another control menu.
- Attach a screenshot and relevant logs if the game provides them.
Without the game and platform, it is not possible to confirm a specific menu path or promise that any one check will resolve the issue.
