First check whether the blur affects just the updated game or also the PS5 home screen and other games. If it is limited to one title, compare that game’s graphics modes and check its patch notes or official support. If several games or the console menus look blurry, check the PS5’s output settings and the HDMI path to your display.
Find out whether the blur is limited to one game
Look at the PS5 home screen, open another game, or play a video in an app. If those look normal, start with the affected game’s graphics settings and update information. That points toward a title-specific setting or change, but does not establish that the patch itself caused the blur.
If the home screen and multiple games also look blurry, check the console’s video output and the connection to your TV or monitor before changing settings in individual games.
Compare the affected game’s graphics modes
If the game offers Performance and Resolution modes, test both in the game’s own graphics menu. Performance mode prioritizes smoother motion; Resolution mode prioritizes higher graphic quality. The difference is most noticeable in motion and detail, and the available modes and behavior depend on the game.

You can also check the PS5 preset at Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. Sony says presets apply only to games that support the modes. A game may have its own separate quality, performance, upscaling, or sharpness options, so check its graphics menu as well. Sony’s Game Presets guide describes the trade-off between smoother motion and higher graphic quality.
Check the PS5’s resolution and output signal
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal to see what the console is sending to the display.
- Check Resolution. Automatic selects the highest resolution the connected TV supports. For 4K output, the display must support 4K; you can select 2160p or leave the setting on Automatic.
A lower output resolution can make the overall picture look less detailed, but changing resolution is not a guaranteed fix for blur confined to one game. Sony’s PS5 resolution guide explains the available output settings.

Check HDR without treating it as a blur switch
Under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR, compare On When Supported and Always On. On When Supported displays non-HDR games and apps in SDR; Always On converts them to HDR output. HDR changes how the image is presented and can affect perceived picture, but Sony does not identify it as a cause of spatial blur.
If brightness or tone looks wrong, use Adjust HDR in the same settings area. Avoid changing RGB Range at random: Sony advises changing it only when an HDMI device is not sending RGB range information correctly. More detail is in the official output and HDR guide.

Isolate the HDMI and display connection
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV or monitor, temporarily removing a soundbar, receiver, capture device, or other intermediary from the signal path.
- Try another HDMI input on the display and check its manual for settings needed to accept the resolution or refresh rate you want.
- Check whether the display has a firmware update available.
- If you are troubleshooting 4K at 120 Hz, confirm that the display supports that mode, use the correct HDMI 2.1 input, and check that the console’s Resolution is Auto or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate is Auto. Some TVs require HDMI 2.1 support to be enabled in their menus.
Sony recommends the cable included with the PS5. For 4K 120 Hz, Sony also specifies a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Consider replacing a cable only if it is damaged, missing, or not suitable for the output mode you are trying to use; a new cable will not correct a game-specific rendering change. Check for game and system updates
To check the game, highlight it on the PS5 home screen, press the Options button, and select Check for Update. To check system software, open Settings > System > System Software. The steps are documented in Sony’s update guide.

If only one game remains blurry after these checks, look at that title’s patch notes or official support channel. Include the game title, patch version, selected graphics mode, display model, and what changed before and after the update. That information helps the developer distinguish a title-specific issue from a display or output problem.

Sony documents clearing the system software cache and rebuilding the database for system feature issues or performance drops, not as proven fixes for blur introduced by a particular game patch. Consider them only after the simpler checks above if you are also seeing broader system problems.

- Turn off the PS5.
- Press and hold the power button; release it after the second beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database, then choose the relevant option. Rebuild Database scans the drive and recreates the content database.
See Sony’s Safe Mode guide for its options and instructions. Do not choose a reset option as an early blur fix; reset options can erase data, so back up before considering them.
When to contact support
If several games remain blurry or the PS5 cannot produce the expected output signal after you check the display and connection, contact PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs. If the problem is isolated to one game, send the developer the title and patch details, selected mode, display, and before-and-after description.
