The 2024 Player’s Handbook revises fifth-edition Dungeons & Dragons rather than introducing a wholly separate game system. Its biggest differences from the 2014 handbook affect character creation, class features, feats, weapons and combat, spells, and how the rules are presented. When a group uses the 2024 handbook, its versions replace overlapping 2014 Player’s Handbook rules and options; some older options absent from the revised book remain usable.
How the 2024 rules relate to 2014 D&D 5e
The revised Player’s Handbook is the new version of fifth-edition core player rules, not a separate game system. D&D Beyond describes the book as the revised fifth-edition core rulebook and labels the rules 5.5e in its digital context. That label helps identify the revision; it does not mean that the game has become an unrelated edition. D&D Beyond’s overview of the 2024 handbook
When using the 2024 handbook, use its version of overlapping rules and player options rather than combining both handbooks’ versions of the same material. D&D Beyond identifies these 2014 options as still usable because they are not included in the revised book:
- Cleric domains: Knowledge, Nature, and Tempest.
- Wizard schools: Conjuration, Enchantment, Necromancy, and Transmutation.
- Species: Half-Elf and Half-Orc.
- Feats: Dungeon Delver, Linguist, and Martial Adept.
This is a list of specified exceptions, not a guarantee that every older supplement, rule, or character combination works unchanged. D&D Beyond’s digital rules documentation also describes older material receiving a Legacy badge as revised core books roll out; that is a tool label, distinct from a general tabletop compatibility ruling. Character creation: backgrounds now shape ability scores and provide a feat
The clearest change to character origins is where ability-score adjustments come from. In the 2024 framework, they are associated with a character’s background rather than species, and each background comes with an Origin feat. The official overview lists sixteen backgrounds and ten species. D&D Beyond’s 2024 handbook overview
This changes how players make a character: the background now contributes directly to both ability scores and a feat, while species is a separate choice. It is not a claim that species no longer matters; the revised book still includes ten species and their rules.

Classes and subclasses: revised features, not a universal rebuild
The handbook includes twelve classes, each with four subclasses. Class features have been revised across the book, but the extent and nature of change differ by class and feature; some are new, some adjusted, and some retained. Consult the class entry for exact level-by-level rules rather than assuming every class was rebuilt from scratch. D&D Beyond’s class-by-class summary
Some subclass names also changed. For example, Path of the Totem Warrior is now Path of the Wild Heart, and Way of Mercy is now Warrior of Mercy. A changed name does not, on its own, tell you every mechanical difference, so use the relevant revised subclass text when building a character.

Weapon Mastery adds tactical weapon properties
The 2024 equipment rules assign each weapon a mastery property. The eight properties are Cleave, Graze, Nick, Push, Sap, Slow, Topple, and Vex. They add distinct effects to weapon use, but owning or wielding a weapon does not by itself grant access to its mastery property: a character needs an appropriate class feature. D&D Beyond’s ruleset changelog and documentation
The equipment revision also adjusts weapon properties and includes new weapons and crafting rules. Check the revised equipment text for a particular weapon and the character’s features to determine what that character can do; the mastery name alone is not a complete rules explanation.

Feats, spells, and the book’s rules presentation
Feats
D&D Beyond counts 75 feats in the 2024 handbook: 37 new and 35 revised, with those figures not presented as accounting for every feat in the total. Feats are grouped as Origin, General, Fighting Style, and Epic Boon. Their category and any level requirements matter when choosing one; check the individual feat and character rules rather than treating all feats as interchangeable. D&D Beyond’s 2024 handbook summary
Spells
The same official summary counts 391 spells, including 30 new spells. That is a book-content count, not a statement that every spell is new or that every 2014 spell has a changed effect. Spell-by-spell differences require checking the relevant revised entries; a high-level comparison cannot substitute for their exact text. D&D Beyond’s 2024 handbook summary

Rules language and organization
The handbook revises and reorganizes rules explanations, including terms such as “D20 Test” and “Magic action,” and includes examples of play. Those presentation changes are part of learning the revised rules: when an interaction depends on a defined term or action, use the current handbook wording rather than relying on an older explanation.
Use current errata for exact wording
Wizards of the Coast and D&D Beyond publish errata that corrects or clarifies text in the revised book. Examples include a correction to Goliath’s Powerful Build wording, changes to Grappler, Poisoner, and Telekinetic, and a clarification in the shield table. For a rules dispute or a build that turns on exact wording, consult the official 2024 Player’s Handbook errata alongside the current book or printing.
Which book should you use at the table?
If your group is moving to the revised rules, the 2024 Player’s Handbook is the reference for its complete revised player rules. Agree on the rules version before building characters, use the corresponding version of overlapping options, and decide together whether to include older options that are not in the new book. Keep the current errata available when exact wording matters. A 2014 option’s absence from the 2024 handbook is not, by itself, proof that it cannot be used; the group should check the stated compatibility guidance and agree on how older material fits its campaign.
