If your PS5 will not recognize a disc, start by checking that the console actually has a compatible disc drive, then reinsert the disc in the correct orientation, clean it, and test another supported disc. These checks quickly separate a damaged or incompatible disc from a console-wide drive problem.
A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read discs unless it is a compatible slim or PS5 Pro model fitted with Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive. If multiple clean, supported discs fail, use the software steps below—but stop and contact PlayStation Repairs before opening the console or buying replacement parts.

Note the exact symptom—such as “Unrecognized disc,” “Cannot read the disc,” a disc icon that never appears, or repeated ejection. Also record whether the console pulls the disc in, recognizes it briefly, or does nothing at all. That information is useful if you contact support.
1. Make sure your PS5 has a compatible disc drive
A standard/original PS5 with an integrated disc drive should accept supported game and movie discs. A PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in drive, so inserting a disc is impossible unless you have a compatible detachable drive installed.

Sony’s detachable Disc Drive is intended for the slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-2100, and the CFI-7000 PS5 Pro model group. It does not turn an original PS5 Digital Edition into a disc-compatible console. The detachable drive also requires an internet connection during its initial pairing and setup. Ask one simple diagnostic question: Does the console physically pull the disc into a slot? If there is no slot, this is not a disc-reading fault—it is a hardware configuration limitation.
2. Insert the disc in the correct direction
PS5 disc orientation depends on whether the console is standing vertically or lying horizontally:

- Vertical PS5: the labeled or artwork side faces left as the disc enters.
- Horizontal PS5: the labeled or artwork side generally faces up.
Do not rely on “label side up” for every PS5. That advice is wrong for a vertically positioned console. If the disc was inserted incorrectly, eject it normally, wait for the drive to stop, and insert it again without pushing or forcing it.

3. Clean and inspect the disc
Fingerprints, dust, scratches, warping, stickers, or a damaged disc surface can prevent recognition. Clean the disc before assuming the drive has failed:
- Eject the disc normally.
- Hold it by the outer edge and center hole.
- Use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.
- Wipe from the center toward the outer edge in straight strokes.
- Reinsert the disc and test it again.
Do not use toothpaste, abrasive cleaners, solvents, household glass cleaner, paper towels, compressed air, or objects inserted into the disc slot. Do not use a cracked, bent, non-circular, repaired, sticker-covered, or heavily damaged disc. Sony’s official disc troubleshooting guidance and PS5 manual provide additional disc-handling warnings.
If cleaning fixes one disc but other discs work normally, the console is probably not the main problem. Replace or exchange the damaged disc rather than repeatedly retrying it.

4. Test another supported disc
This is the most valuable diagnostic test. If possible, test these in order:

- Another PS5 game disc.
- A PS4 game disc.
- A commercial Blu-ray.
- A commercial DVD.
Interpret the result:
- Only one disc fails: the disc may be dirty, scratched, counterfeit, improperly finalized, or otherwise incompatible.
- All tested discs fail: suspect the drive, laser, drive connection, firmware, or system database.
- Games work but movies fail: check the movie disc’s format and region restrictions.
- Movies work but one game fails: the game disc or its installation/content may be the issue.
- The drive will not pull discs in or eject them: this points more toward a mechanical loading or eject fault than a read error.
The PS5 supports PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs, compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs, Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, and certain recordable video media subject to format and finalization restrictions. Sony explicitly says the PS5 does not play burned discs or audio CDs. Physical PS1, PS2, and PS3 game discs are not supported as backward-compatible game discs.
Imported DVDs and Blu-rays can also be affected by region rules. Game-disc behavior and movie-disc region behavior are not identical, so do not treat every region-related failure as a broken drive. Sony’s PS5 manual explains media and region limitations, including limits on changing the DVD region setting.
5. Restart and update the PS5
A normal restart can clear a temporary system or drive-recognition problem:

- Select Power.
- Choose Restart PS5.
- After the restart, eject and reinsert the disc.
Then check for system software updates under Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings. Menu wording can vary slightly between system software versions. Install an available update, restart the console, and test the disc again.

An update may resolve a software-related recognition problem, but it cannot repair a failed laser, damaged disc mechanism, or physically obstructed drive.
6. Clear the cache and rebuild the database in Safe Mode
If several supported discs fail after a restart and update, use Safe Mode before considering a reset. Sony specifically recommends the Clear Cache and Rebuild Database option for disc-reading problems.
- Turn off the PS5 completely; do not use Rest Mode.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Release it after the second beep. The second beep occurs about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller with a data-capable USB cable. Charge-only cables may not work.
- Press the PS button.
- Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
- Choose Rebuild Database if the console presents a further choice.
Database rebuilding reorganizes system content and may resolve certain indexing or software problems. It is preferable to a factory reset, but it is not a guaranteed repair for a mechanical or optical-drive failure. Do not unplug the console while Safe Mode is working, and allow the process to finish; the duration depends on the amount of stored content.
7. Reinstall system software only after backing up
Reinstalling the PS5 system software is a destructive last-resort software test. It deletes all information on the console, so do not use it merely because one game disc fails.

Consider it only after you have:
- Confirmed the console has a compatible disc drive.
- Checked the insertion orientation.
- Cleaned the disc.
- Tested multiple known-good supported discs.
- Restarted and updated the PS5.
- Used Safe Mode to rebuild the database.
Back up saved data and important captures wherever possible. Then enter Safe Mode and select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Follow Sony’s current reinstallation instructions, which require a USB drive and the correct system-software file. The console will need to be set up again afterward. Use Sony’s official instructions rather than an unofficial download or guide.
If multiple clean, supported discs still fail after reinstalling, further software troubleshooting is unlikely to help. Check the warranty and start a case with PlayStation Repairs or Support.
How to remove a stuck PS5 disc
Do not forcibly pull a trapped disc or insert tools into the slot. Sony’s manual-eject procedure requires turning off the console, removing all cables and devices, placing the PS5 on a soft cloth, removing the base, and using a #1 Phillips/cross-head screwdriver at the appropriate screw access point to release the disc.

Do not power on or play the console with the cover removed. If the disc will not release, stop and arrange service.
When the PS5 disc drive is probably broken
Repair is the sensible next step when:
- Two or more clean, supported discs fail.
- The drive repeatedly ejects discs or never completes loading.
- The console makes grinding, clicking, or scraping noises.
- The drive does not pull discs in or cannot eject them normally.
- The problem began after the console was opened, modified, dropped, or exposed to liquid.
Do not spray cleaner into the slot or use a generic laser-cleaning disc. Sony’s user guidance focuses on cleaning the disc, not cleaning the internal laser. Opening or modifying the console can cause additional damage and may affect warranty eligibility. In the U.S., Sony’s PS5 limited hardware warranty is generally one year from the original purchase date for the original purchaser, subject to its terms and exclusions. Damage from misuse, unauthorized service, opening, modification, or incompatible accessories may be excluded; check the current warranty terms.
What to do before contacting support
- Write down the PS5 model group from the console label.
- Record the exact error message and whether the drive pulls in and ejects discs.
- List the discs tested and whether each is a PS5 game, PS4 game, Blu-ray, or DVD.
- Note any grinding, clicking, repeated ejection, or recent physical damage.
- Check proof of purchase and warranty status.
- Back up important data before any reset or service process.
If the console fails with multiple known-good discs, start with official PlayStation Repairs before purchasing a replacement laser, opening the console, or replacing the entire system. A compatible detachable Disc Drive is for supported slim Digital Edition and PS5 Pro models; it does not repair an integrated drive or add disc support to an original Digital Edition.
