Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS Review: Performance and Battery Life Tested

The Z1 Extreme SteamOS Legion Go S is exceptionally fast at 800p, but its 55.5Wh battery lasts roughly 1.5–2.5 hours in demanding AAA games. The cheaper Z2 Go model is a different value proposition.

Verdict: The SteamOS Lenovo Legion Go S is an excellent high-performance gaming handheld when equipped with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. It is faster and easier to use than the Windows configuration in the available testing, but its 55.5Wh battery still delivers only about 1.5 to 2.5 hours of demanding AAA gaming. The cheaper Ryzen Z2 Go model is a value-focused alternative, not an equivalent version of the Z1 Extreme review unit.

For Steam-first players who want a larger 8-inch screen and more performance than a Steam Deck, the Legion Go S SteamOS is compelling. It is a weaker choice for Game Pass PC, Windows-only software, unsupported multiplayer games, or anyone who requires three or more hours of demanding unplugged gaming.

Which Legion Go S is this review about?

The performance results discussed here come primarily from the SteamOS model with AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme, 32GB LPDDR5X memory, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. That configuration has an eight-core, 16-thread processor reaching up to 5.1GHz and Radeon 780M-class integrated graphics with 12 compute units.

Lenovo also sells Legion Go S configurations with the Ryzen Z2 Go: a four-core, eight-thread chip with a maximum clock speed of 4.3GHz. Z2 Go models can be paired with 16GB or 32GB of memory and 512GB or 1TB of storage. Lenovo lists both processor families as compatible with Windows 11 and SteamOS in its Z1 Extreme specification sheet and Z2 Go specification sheet.

This distinction matters. Tom’s Hardware found the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model substantially faster than the Z2 Go SteamOS model, so its benchmark results should not be treated as representative of every Legion Go S.

Quick assessment

Category Assessment
Performance Excellent on the Z1 Extreme model, especially at 800p
SteamOS experience Excellent for Steam-first gaming
Battery life Average to weak for demanding games
Display Sharp, bright LCD with 120Hz and VRR; no OLED contrast
Controls and comfort Rounded and integrated, but heavy and not flawless
Value Highly dependent on processor, RAM, storage, and price

SteamOS makes the Legion Go S feel like a console

The largest day-to-day improvement over the Windows version is not a single frame-rate feature. It is the reduction in friction. SteamOS starts quickly, offers a controller-first interface, and puts the Steam Library, Store, downloads, friends, cloud saves, and system settings in a layout designed for a handheld rather than a desktop.

Tom’s Guide completed initial setup, including firmware updates, in under five minutes and found it substantially easier to navigate than Windows 11 on a handheld. Suspend and resume also fit the way people use a portable console: pause a game, put the device down, and return without navigating a desktop or waiting through a full launch sequence.

Valve describes SteamOS as Arch Linux-based, with Proton allowing the vast majority of the Steam library to run without native Linux versions. It is not restricted to Steam games. Switching to Steam Menu → Power → Switch to Desktop opens a conventional Linux desktop for installing software and alternate launchers, as described in Lenovo’s SteamOS user guide. The experience is simply less seamless once a game falls outside the Steam ecosystem.

Gaming performance: 800p is the sweet spot

The Z1 Extreme Legion Go S has enough graphics performance to make current AAA games playable, but the 8-inch panel’s native 1920×1200 resolution is demanding. In most modern games, 1280×800 with an upscaler is the more sensible starting point.

The 120Hz refresh rate does not mean demanding games will run at 120 frames per second. It gives the system flexibility for lighter games, allows smoother cursor and menu motion, and works with variable refresh rate when frame rates fluctuate. For AAA games, a stable 30, 40, or 60 fps target is usually more realistic.

Tom’s Hardware’s results show the Z1 Extreme SteamOS model leading the Z2 Go SteamOS version by approximately 8 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, 11 fps in Cyberpunk 2077, 14 fps in Far Cry 6, 14 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2, and 18 fps in Borderlands 3 at 800p. The size of the gap confirms that the processor and graphics configuration matter more than the Legion Go S name alone.

In Doom: The Dark Ages, Tom’s Guide measured roughly 25 fps at native 1200p with medium settings and no FSR, about 35 fps with FSR, and approximately 56–61 fps at 800p with FSR. That is a useful illustration of the device’s tuning range: native 1200p can be too ambitious in a demanding game, while 800p plus upscaling can approach a high-refresh experience.

Native rendering, upscaling, and frame generation are different

FSR and similar technologies render internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image for the display. That can improve the balance between clarity and speed, but the output is not equivalent to native 1200p.

Frame generation is different again. It inserts generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. The displayed frame rate can rise, but input latency and visual artifacts may also increase. When comparing handheld performance, native or traditionally rendered fps should be reported separately from generated or displayed fps.

How much of the performance comes from SteamOS?

SteamOS contributes, but it does not explain the entire advantage of the reviewed system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Silicon: The Z1 Extreme has twice the CPU core count of the Z2 Go and a stronger integrated graphics configuration.
  2. Memory: The reviewed system’s 32GB of RAM gives the operating system and modern games more headroom than a 16GB model.
  3. Software overhead: SteamOS runs a gaming-focused environment with fewer typical Windows background processes.
  4. Power limits: TDP settings and plugged-in status can change results substantially, sometimes more than the operating system.

Tom’s Hardware directly compared a Z2 Go Legion Go S running Windows 11 with the same hardware running SteamOS and found a SteamOS advantage of approximately 4–15 fps depending on the game and resolution. Its SteamOS sample delivered similar performance on battery and AC power in that test setup, while the Windows comparison unit used a higher 40W plugged-in profile. That is evidence of a meaningful software and configuration advantage, not proof that SteamOS universally doubles performance or produces the same gain on every Windows handheld.

Battery life: good enough for short sessions, not long AAA trips

The Legion Go S has a 55.5Wh battery, but the Z1 Extreme can consume that capacity quickly when its performance limits are raised.

Workload Available result What it means
Demanding AAA at 1200p About 1.5 hours in Doom: The Dark Ages at 30W Native high-resolution gaming is extremely demanding
Demanding AAA at 800p About 2 hours 5 minutes in Red Dead Redemption 2 A realistic high-performance session length
Demanding driving game at 800p About 2 hours 30 minutes in BeamNG Some workloads last longer than the heaviest AAA tests
Video playback or light use 562 minutes in PCWorld’s Windows-model 4K video loop Not representative of gaming endurance
Indie, 2D, older games, or emulation Potentially longer, depending on a 10–15W profile and frame cap Must be tested separately from AAA gaming

Tom’s Hardware recorded approximately 2 hours 5 minutes in Red Dead Redemption 2 and 2 hours 30 minutes in BeamNG at 800p, 50% brightness, maximum details, and Performance mode. Tom’s Guide obtained about 1.5 hours in Doom: The Dark Ages at 1200p and a 30W profile. These figures are not contradictory: resolution, game engine, brightness, frame-rate target, wireless activity, firmware, and power mode all matter.

Charging and travel

Lenovo supplies a 65W USB-C adapter, appropriate for the handheld’s higher-performance profiles. A high-output USB-C Power Delivery power bank is a practical travel companion, particularly for AAA gaming. Look for at least 65W output, sufficient watt-hours, and a short cable; a low-output bank may charge slowly or fail to sustain play while the system is under load.

The supplied evidence confirms the adapter and battery capacities but does not provide controlled 0–50%, 0–80%, or 0–100% charge times. Charging speed can also vary with temperature, system load, battery state, and firmware. Buyers should check whether their installed software exposes battery conservation or charge-limit options before leaving the device permanently connected.

The 8-inch display is a real advantage, with a GPU cost

The Legion Go S uses an 8-inch, 16:10 IPS panel with a 1920×1200 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, 48–120Hz variable refresh rate, 10-point touch, and Lenovo-rated 500-nit brightness. Lenovo also specifies 100% sRGB coverage. See the company’s display specifications.

Tom’s Hardware measured approximately 441 nits, 116.3% sRGB coverage, and 82.4% DCI-P3 coverage on its review sample. That independent result and Lenovo’s 500-nit rating are not directly equivalent measurements, but both indicate a bright, colorful LCD.

At this size, 1200p is visibly sharper for text, strategy games, desktop work, and older titles. In demanding AAA games, however, rendering at 1200p places substantially more work on the integrated GPU. 800p with FSR is usually the better performance setting. VRR helps reduce tearing and makes uneven frame rates feel smoother, although it cannot turn a low frame rate into a high one.

The panel is well suited to indoor and many travel environments, but it remains a glossy LCD rather than an OLED. Reflections can be distracting outdoors, and black levels and contrast will not match an OLED Steam Deck.

Controls, ergonomics, and noise

The Go S has a more rounded housing than the original Legion Go and uses integrated controls rather than detachable controllers. Lenovo lists the device at approximately 740g, while Tom’s Hardware measured its sample at 730g. Treat that as normal source or configuration variation: either way, it is a substantial handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The built-in controls include rear buttons, trigger-range switches, and a touchpad intended to make desktop interaction possible without a mouse. The D-pad and integrated layout are more console-like than a Windows laptop interface, but the touchpad was criticized by Tom’s Hardware as finicky. It is useful for occasional pointer movement, not a complete substitute for a mouse.

Performance mode also has a cost beyond battery life. WIRED noted that the fans can become conspicuously loud, particularly under sustained load. Heat and noise are therefore part of the performance trade-off: quieter and longer sessions generally require lower power limits, reduced resolution, frame caps, or less demanding games.

SteamOS compatibility: excellent for Steam, limited outside it

SteamOS is the right choice when the Legion Go S is primarily a Steam console. It is not identical to Windows compatibility.

Use case Expected experience
Steam games Best-case scenario, with Game Mode, Steam Input, downloads, and cloud saves integrated
Non-Steam games Usually possible, but may require Desktop mode and manual shortcuts or configuration
Epic and GOG launchers Possible, but less seamless than Steam Library integration
PC Game Pass Major limitation compared with Windows; it is not a native SteamOS experience
Competitive multiplayer Check each game’s anti-cheat support; some titles may be unavailable or unreliable
Windows utilities and peripheral software May require workarounds or a Windows installation

Valve says Proton runs the vast majority of the Steam library, not every game. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, DRM, unsupported codecs, and game-specific behavior can prevent a title from working. A Steam Deck Verified label is useful guidance but does not guarantee perfect performance on the Legion Go S, whose hardware and screen resolution differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s current SteamOS page identifies the Steam Deck and Legion Go S as officially supported devices. Official device support should not be confused with universal game compatibility. For a specific multiplayer or launcher-heavy game, check current ProtonDB reports, the game’s support status, and recent community reports before buying.

Z1 Extreme versus Z2 Go

Configuration Best for Main strengths Main compromise
Z1 Extreme / 32GB / 1TB AAA performance and long-term headroom Eight cores, stronger graphics, 32GB RAM, higher 800p and 1200p ceiling High price, fan noise, and short demanding-game battery life
Z2 Go / 16GB / 512GB Value, indie games, older AAA, emulation, tuned 800p play Lower entry price and potentially lower consumption in lighter workloads Four-core CPU and weaker graphics; less headroom in modern AAA games
Windows Legion Go S Game Pass, launchers, and Windows software Broadest compatibility and conventional Windows tools More setup friction and less controller-first navigation

The Z2 Go should not be dismissed because it loses to the Z1 Extreme in benchmarks. It is aimed at a different price/performance tier. If the buyer mainly plays indies, older games, emulation, or tuned 800p titles, the cheaper model can make more financial sense. Confirm the exact listing before purchase: processor, operating system, RAM, and storage can all differ under the Legion Go S name.

Price and value

Lenovo announced SteamOS configurations with a starting price of $499.99. Tom’s Hardware cited a $599 Z2 Go/16GB/512GB configuration and reviewed an $829.99 Z1 Extreme/32GB/1TB model. Those are launch or review-era price signals, not verified live prices for September 2026.

At a lower price, the Z2 Go is the value proposition. The Z1 Extreme is the performance proposition, and its premium is easiest to justify when 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and higher AAA frame rates matter more than cost. If its price approaches premium Windows handhelds with larger batteries, the short gaming endurance becomes a more serious drawback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy the SteamOS Legion Go S?

  • Buy the Z1 Extreme model if you want maximum Legion Go S performance, primarily use Steam, value 32GB RAM, and are comfortable targeting 800p with upscaling and carrying a charger or power bank.
  • Buy the Z2 Go model if it is substantially cheaper and your library consists mainly of indie games, older AAA games, emulation, or games you are happy to tune to 800p.
  • Choose the Windows version if Game Pass PC, anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer, Windows utilities, or multiple proprietary launchers are central to your use.
  • Choose a Steam Deck if you value Valve’s established SteamOS experience, OLED contrast, first-party ecosystem, and a simpler product lineup more than raw performance and screen size.
  • Consider a larger-battery Windows handheld if endurance is your top priority and you accept Windows interface friction.

The device is a poor fit if three or more hours of demanding unplugged gaming is a hard requirement, if you need native Game Pass PC support, or if you already own a Z1 Extreme original Legion Go and mainly want a major raw-performance upgrade.

Final verdict

The SteamOS Legion Go S is one of the most convincing non-Steam Deck SteamOS handhelds because it combines a console-friendly interface with a large, bright VRR display and strong Z1 Extreme performance. Its best results come at 800p, where demanding games can become genuinely enjoyable rather than merely playable.

But the model identity determines the recommendation. The Z1 Extreme/32GB/1TB version is the fast one tested here; the Z2 Go model is a cheaper, slower value configuration. SteamOS improves usability and can provide a measured performance advantage over a comparable Windows setup, but it does not erase the limits of the 55.5Wh battery. Buy it for SteamOS convenience and performance, not for all-day AAA gaming or universal Windows compatibility.
