What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If your PS5 is lagging online, first check whether the problem is your connection or a game’s frame rate. For network problems, check PlayStation Network status, test the console’s connection, then try a restart and a wired LAN connection before changing advanced router settings. These steps can help diagnose connection trouble, but no DNS setting or faster internet plan is a guaranteed fix.
First identify what kind of lag you’re seeing
Delayed responses during online play, dropped connections, timeouts, and slow downloads point toward a network issue. Stuttering or a low frame rate that also occurs in offline play is a different problem: the PlayStation network guidance below does not establish a universal fix for game rendering performance.
Note when the issue occurs and whether it affects one game or several. This helps distinguish a service or connection problem from an issue limited to a particular game or application.
Check PSN status and test the PS5 connection
When the problem is happening, check the PlayStation Network status page for service failures or maintenance before changing your home network. Status can change, so an earlier check may not reflect the current situation.

- On PS5, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Review the results and see whether the console connects to the internet and PlayStation Network.
- If the test reports an error, follow the relevant PlayStation troubleshooting steps for that error code.
A speed-test result by itself cannot identify every cause of in-game lag. PlayStation’s reviewed guidance does not set a universal minimum internet speed or latency threshold for smooth gaming. PlayStation’s network-related application error guidance also recommends checking service status and the connection, then updating system software or the affected application if needed.
Restart the console and network equipment
- Restart the PS5.
- Restart your router. If the relevant error guidance calls for restarting both the router and modem, restart both.
- In the cases covered by the cited PlayStation troubleshooting pages, wait at least five minutes before restarting the router or modem.
Restart instructions depend on the error and network setup. Consult the steps for your specific error rather than treating a router restart as a guaranteed fix for every lag problem. PlayStation’s NW-102307-3 guidance and NW-102417-5 timeout guidance include network equipment restarts among their troubleshooting steps.

Try a wired connection, or improve the Wi-Fi path
Wired LAN
When possible, connect the PS5 to the router using a LAN cable. A cable long enough to reach the router is all that is needed to try this supported troubleshooting option; PlayStation does not promise a particular latency improvement.
- Connect a LAN cable between the PS5 and router.
- On the console, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- Test the connection again and see whether the problem continues.
Wi-Fi
If a cable is impractical, move the console closer to the router and remove objects that may block or interfere with the wireless signal. Check that the selected network name (SSID), password, and security method are correct.

For a PS5 Pro in the CFI-7000 model group, PlayStation advises trying the connection with Multi-Link Operation (MLO) both enabled and disabled when diagnosing connection trouble. This option is model-specific, not a general setting for every PS5. PlayStation’s internet connection setup guide covers wired and wireless setup.
Check router settings only for a relevant error
Before changing router configuration, ask your internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator whether router firmware updates are available. If you are unfamiliar with network settings, get their help rather than guessing: a change can affect other devices or make the connection harder to restore.

Some error-specific PlayStation guidance lists port filtering, a manual static IP address, or a temporary DNS change as later troubleshooting options. These are not universal performance tweaks. For the NW-102417-5 timeout error, PlayStation lists the following ports:
| Protocol | Ports listed for NW-102417-5 |
|---|---|
| TCP | 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 |
| UDP | 3478, 3479, 49152–65535 |
These ports are cited for that particular timeout troubleshooting page; they are not a blanket instruction to open every port on every router. Consult PlayStation’s NW-102417-5 instructions and your router documentation before making changes.

DNS translates domain names into IP addresses. The cited PlayStation page suggests changing DNS temporarily as one possible response to this specific timeout error, but does not establish that any public DNS service will lower gaming latency for everyone. PS5 connection settings also include IP address, DHCP host name, DNS, MTU, and proxy options; leave unfamiliar settings unchanged unless your ISP, network administrator, or error-specific instructions advise otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check IPv6 compatibility
PS5 supports IPv6 connections but does not support an IPv6-only network connection. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, PlayStation says to change it to use IPv4. If you do not manage the router, ask the network administrator or ISP to check its configuration. PlayStation’s connection setup guide describes this limitation and the console’s connection settings.
Quick Recap
When the problem remains
- If only one game or application is affected, check whether it needs an update and consult its support guidance.
- If a network-related error persists, check PSN status again and follow the troubleshooting page for the exact error code.
- If you cannot verify router firmware or safely adjust network settings, contact your ISP or network administrator.
- If the connection test succeeds but the issue is stuttering or low frame rate, treat it as a game or console performance problem rather than assuming a network setting will fix it.
