If your PS5 will not output at 1440p, start by checking whether the exact HDMI input on your display accepts a PS5-supported 1440p timing, then run the console’s compatibility test. A display advertised as “1440p” may not accept 1440p over every input or at every refresh rate. Check the signal the PS5 detects, test the mode, and look for anything between the console and display that could limit it.
1. Check whether the display’s HDMI input supports the mode you want
Sony lists support for a TV or PC monitor that accepts 1440p at 60 Hz, or 1440p at both 60 Hz and 120 Hz. Check the documentation for your exact display model and the HDMI port you are using; a resolution label alone does not confirm support for the desired input timing. See Sony’s PS5 feature specifications.
If you want 120 Hz, verify that the particular HDMI input accepts 1440p at 120 Hz—not just 1440p or 120 Hz separately. Treat resolution and refresh rate as distinct compatibility checks.
2. Inspect what the PS5 detects and run its 1440p test
- On the console, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Review Current Video Output Signal and the connected HDMI device information, including the reported resolution, HDR, and VRR capabilities.
- Select Test 1440p Output. Sony says the test checks 1440p output for SDR and HDR at 60 Hz and 120 Hz, as well as VRR.
- If the test supports the mode you want, set Resolution to 1440p.
Sony says the PS5 detects the connected TV’s capabilities and selects the highest available resolution automatically. If Resolution is set to Automatic, check the reported signal rather than assuming the console will select 1440p. The test and settings are described in Sony’s resolution support guide.

3. Separate basic 1440p from 1440p VRR
A failed VRR check does not by itself show that ordinary 1440p output is unsupported. Sony says 1440p VRR requires a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 display and a game that supports VRR. The PS5’s 1440p test reports SDR/HDR, refresh-rate, and VRR results separately, so use the result for the specific feature you are troubleshooting.
On February 2, 2023, Sony announced that it had updated the test parameters to support a wider range of HDMI displays and added 1440p VRR with the stated display and game requirements. That announcement does not guarantee support for every display, timing, or game today; check the console’s test and the current documentation for your model. Read Sony’s announcement.

4. Isolate the HDMI connection before replacing anything
If the PS5 connects through a receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or adapter, connect it directly to the display temporarily. This is a diagnostic step: it can help determine whether the intermediary is involved, but Sony does not identify such devices as a guaranteed cause of 1440p problems.
Try the display’s supported HDMI input and the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5. Sony recommends the included cable for supported features and says an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that supports HDMI 2.1 should support HDMI 2.1 features. A replacement cable is not a universal fix for a display that does not accept the required timing. If you suspect the existing cable or signal path, an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is one possible check—not a reason to buy one before testing the direct connection. Sony’s resolution guide has its cable and support guidance.

5. Update system software, then escalate a persistent failure
Install current PS5 system software through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony recommends keeping system software up to date and cautions users to follow its official update instructions. See Sony’s update instructions.
If the test still fails after a direct connection, with current software and a display input documented to support the desired timing, ask the display manufacturer about that exact model and port. For persistent PS5 resolution issues, Sony directs users to PlayStation Repairs. Repair options and eligibility may vary by region and console; Sony’s cited guidance does not specify costs or warranty decisions.
