If a PS5 Pro game looks unstable with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), first check whether the issue appears only in one game or scene, or also affects the PS5 interface and other games. For a problem confined to one title, compare its optional Enhance PSSR Image Quality setting. For screen flicker or trouble with 4K/120 Hz output across the console, check video-transfer and display settings instead. These are reversible tests, not guaranteed fixes: Sony says PSSR results vary by game.

First work out where the problem occurs

Note whether the image problem is limited to one PSSR-compatible game, appears only during certain scenes or camera movement, or also affects the PS5 interface and other games. An issue limited to one title makes that game’s rendering path or current patch more relevant; a problem across games or menus makes display-output and connection checks more relevant. This distinction helps narrow what to test, but Sony does not publish a definitive symptom-to-cause chart.

  • One game or scene: test the PSSR option and check the game’s update and support notes.
  • Multiple games or the PS5 interface: check video output, refresh-rate settings, and the display connection.
  • Only at 4K/120 Hz, or a blank picture when using that mode: follow the display compatibility checks below.

How to test the PSSR image-quality setting

On supported PS5 Pro consoles, Sony provides an optional system setting for enhanced PSSR image quality. Sony says the option is on by default, and that it is available only on consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. Its effect can vary by game, so compare the same scene rather than assuming the setting improves every title.

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
  2. Turn the setting off if you see unexpected visual effects.
  3. Return to the same game scene and compare it during the same camera movement, if possible.
  4. If the image looks better with the setting off, leave it off for that title while checking for system software and game updates.

Sony’s guidance is to disable the option if it causes unexpected visual effects; it does not promise that switching it off will improve every image-quality or performance complaint. [Sony’s PS5 Pro PSSR setting guidance]

How to stop screen flickering across games

If flicker is not confined to one game’s PSSR image, Sony recommends trying a lower Video Transfer Rate. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helps, and restore the original value if it does not.

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Set Video Transfer Rate to -1 and check whether the flicker changes.
  3. If it does not, try -2.
  4. If neither setting helps, return Video Transfer Rate to its original value.

Sony says -1 or -2 limits output and may improve picture quality. Because these settings restrict some output modes and color formats, they can involve a trade-off rather than being a universal best setting. [Sony’s PS5 resolution and flicker guidance]

What to check for 120 Hz or 4K/120 Hz output problems

When a 120 Hz game has video output problems

If a 120 Hz game causes video output trouble on a monitor or another display device, Sony advises turning off 120 Hz Output. This tests whether the issue is tied to that output mode rather than to PSSR image reconstruction.

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  2. Turn off 120 Hz Output and check the game again.

When 4K/120 Hz produces no picture or an unstable signal

Check the full signal path: the TV’s HDMI port, the TV’s own HDMI settings, the PS5 resolution, and the console’s Video Transfer Rate. Sony’s guidance for 4K/120 Hz problems is to use a TV HDMI 2.1 port, verify the TV’s HDMI settings, set PS5 resolution to Auto or 2160p, and set Video Transfer Rate to Auto. Sony also notes that 4K/120 Hz support is an evolving market capability and compatibility problems may occur.

  • Connect the console to a TV HDMI 2.1 port that supports the desired mode.
  • Check the TV’s own HDMI input settings for that port.
  • Set PS5 resolution to Auto or 2160p.
  • Set Video Transfer Rate to Auto for this compatibility check.

Sony recommends the HDMI cable included with the console. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supporting HDMI 2.1 is a compatible alternative for ALLM. A cable or port check addresses a video-signal problem; it should not be treated as a fix for visual artifacts that appear only in a game’s PSSR output. [Sony’s 4K and 120 Hz connection guidance]

When the issue is specific to one game

Check that game’s update history and support notes, and compare its available graphics or PSSR settings. Sony says PSSR results vary by title, so an optional system setting that helps one game may not help another. For example, Sony-published comments from the director of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth describe improved fine detail and reduced flickering and afterimage effects with upgraded PSSR in that game; that is a title-specific developer assessment, not a guarantee for other games. [Sony’s developer comments on upgraded PSSR]

When reporting a persistent game-specific problem, note the title, scene, selected graphics mode, whether Enhance PSSR Image Quality is on, and whether the problem changes when it is off. Contact the game publisher for a title-specific rendering issue, or PlayStation Support for a console or display-output issue. Sony announced in March 2026 that upgraded PSSR support arrived through a PS5 system software update and that compatible existing titles can use the optional system setting; an update is worth checking, but Sony does not guarantee it will correct an individual artifact. What PSSR support numbers do—and don’t—tell you

Sony Interactive Entertainment said on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles “to date.” That dated figure refers to PSSR use as of the announcement; it is not a current count of games supporting upgraded PSSR, nor evidence that every title will look or perform the same.
