MSI can also affect Worlds access and regional seeding, so the domestic split routes are not the whole qualification picture. Formats and allocations are season- and region-specific.
How the 2026 season is organized
Riot’s 2026 season handbook lays out the year as regional Split 1, First Stand, regional Split 2, MSI, regional Split 3, and Worlds. Riot says each region runs its own split format and style; the LCS structure below should not be assumed to describe the LEC, LCK, LPL, or other leagues.
| 2026 stage | LCS route | International event |
|---|---|---|
| Split 1 | Playoff winner | First Stand |
| Split 2 | Top two teams | MSI |
| Split 3 | Top three playoff finishers | Worlds |
The table shows the LCS’s domestic routes. MSI results add separate opportunities and seeding effects at Worlds.
How LCS Split 1 qualifies a team for First Stand
In the 2026 LCS Split 1 regular season, each team plays a single round robin in best-of-three series. The top six advance to a modified double-elimination playoff, and the playoff winner qualifies for First Stand. These rules are listed in the LCS Split 1 handbook.

First Stand qualification is based on winning that playoff, not simply finishing first in the regular season. Across regions, Split 1 winners qualify; the LCK and LPL also send their second-place teams.
How LCS Split 2 qualifies teams for MSI
The LCS sends its top two teams from the Split 2 route to MSI. Riot’s 2026 season overview says the top team from CBLOL qualifies, while the top two from each of the other regions qualify. The handbook notes that regional split formats vary, so it does not establish an LCS Split 2 bracket that can be inferred from another league’s format.
How the 2026 MSI field and stages work
Riot’s March 22, 2026 MSI and Worlds update describes an 11-team MSI field:
Rank #2
- COMPLETE OUT-OF-THE-BOX PLAY: Includes prebuilt decks designed for balanced matchups, making it easy for anyone to learn and start battling immediately. 4 character starter decks: Master Yi, Annie, Lux and Garen.
- MULTIPLAYER MAYHEM: Supports 2-4 players with flexible gameplay modes, from head-to-head duels to strategic alliances and shifting battles. Multiple game modes ensure varied and exciting gameplay every session.
- STEP-BY-STEP LEARNING: A guided play experience helps new players master the game quickly, while deck upgrade suggestions provide an easy transition to competitive play through booster purchases (sold separately).

- Two teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL.

The update describes a four-team double-elimination Play-In. One team advances from Play-In to join seven teams starting in the bracket stage. Those seven include each region’s first seed and the second seed of the highest-ranked region among the regions sending two teams. The update also says the region that wins First Stand receives a bye directly into MSI’s bracket stage.

The region finishing second at MSI receives a fourth Worlds seed. These rules are described in Riot’s MSI standings and overview and the 2026 update. Riot’s overview contains Play-In advancement wording that differs from the dated 2026 update; the one-team advancement figure above follows the March 22 update.
How LCS Split 3 qualifies teams for Worlds
For 2026 LCS Split 3, teams play a single round robin regular season in best-of-three series. The top six reach a modified double-elimination playoff with a gauntlet-style losers bracket. The top three playoff finishers qualify for Worlds, according to the LCS Split 3 handbook.
Rank #3

That is the LCS’s domestic qualification route. The 2026 Worlds field also includes places earned through MSI: the MSI champion’s invitation and an additional team for the region that finishes second at MSI.
The announced 2026 Worlds field
Riot’s March 22 update describes a 19-team field: three teams each from the LCK, LCS, LCP, LEC, and LPL; two from CBLOL; the MSI champion; and an additional team from the MSI runner-up’s region. The MSI champion must also qualify for its home region’s playoffs to retain its invitation.

The update describes Worlds Play-In as a four-team double-elimination best-of-five bracket, with one team advancing to Swiss. Thus the 2026 field is not simply a set of identical regional allocations: the MSI result changes who gets an extra Worlds place.

2026 international event formats and schedule
First Stand
First Stand begins with two groups of four playing double-elimination brackets. The event then moves to a single-elimination best-of-five phase. The region that wins the event earns a bye directly into the MSI bracket stage, according to Riot’s season overview.
MSI
MSI is the midseason international event after Split 2. Its 2026 field and the dated update’s Play-In and bracket-stage progression are detailed above. MSI matters to Worlds because the champion earns a direct invitation and the runner-up’s region earns an additional seed.
Worlds
As announced on October 7, 2026, Worlds is scheduled for October 15 through November 14 across Los Angeles, Allen, Texas, and Brooklyn, New York. Riot’s March 22 update lists Play-In in Los Angeles from October 15–18; Swiss in Allen from October 23–31; quarterfinals and semifinals in Allen from November 3–8; and the Grand Final in Brooklyn on November 14. These are announced dates and venues for the upcoming 2026 event.
What to check when comparing regional formats
A format comparison is meaningful only when it is tied to a specific region and season. For each league, check the regular-season structure and match length, how many teams reach playoffs, the playoff bracket type, and how many teams qualify for each international event. Also check whether international results change later invitations or regional seeding. Riot’s handbook explicitly says regional split formats differ, while its 2026 allocation update shows that MSI results can change Worlds access.
