If RCon stopped working immediately after a DayZ update, first find the configuration used by the running server, then repair that file and the UDP path to it. DayZ uses BattlEye RCon, so the decisive settings are the active BEServer_x64.cfg (Windows) or beserver_x64.cfg (Linux), a free UDP port, a valid password, and firewall rules that permit that port. The procedure below separates server-configuration faults from provider, NAT, and monitoring-client faults.

What you are repairing
DayZ RCon is BattlEye’s optional UDP remote-control protocol. It is separate from the game connection and from the Steam query port. A working game server therefore does not prove that RCon is configured or reachable. After an update, administrators most often edit an old BattlEye directory, keep a port that is now occupied, or lose the network rule that allowed the old port.

Your target state is simple: the running DayZ process receives the intended -profiles and, if used, -BEpath values; BattlEye loads the matching configuration file; that file contains one RConPassword and one RConPort line; the selected UDP port is unused and forwarded; and an independent RCon client can authenticate.
1. Confirm the paths used by the running server
Do not begin by searching the whole disk and editing the first file named BEServer_x64.cfg. DayZ can have several server copies, test instances, or old update directories. The active process determines which profile and BattlEye directories matter.

Read the launch parameters
Inspect the script, service definition, container command, or control-panel startup field that launches the instance. Record the exact values passed to:
-profiles: the profile and log directory. BattlEye files and RCon logs may be created below this location.-BEpath: an optional override for the BattlEye directory. When present, it can move the configuration away from the default location.
If the server is managed by a host, inspect the provider’s effective startup command rather than a local copy of an old batch file. A changed profile path after an update can make a previously correct edit irrelevant.
Find the correct filename
On Windows, the documented filename is BEServer_x64.cfg. On Linux, use the lowercase form beserver_x64.cfg. CFTools documentation notes that there is no universal fixed location: the file is commonly under profiles/BattlEye or beside the BattlEye server DLL.
Typical search commands are useful for locating candidates, but you must match the result to the paths in the active launch command:

Substitute the directory used by your installation. If multiple results appear, check which one sits below the active -profiles or -BEpath directory and which one has a recent modification time or current BattlEye log activity.
Back up before editing
Stop the server, copy the candidate configuration to a dated backup, and then edit the file in place. Keeping the backup lets you restore unrelated BattlEye options if the update changed more than RCon. Do not create a second file with a nearly identical name; BattlEye will not use it just because it is in the same parent directory.

Open the active file with a plain-text editor. Start with only the settings needed to prove connectivity. A minimal configuration has one password line and one port line:

Pick a free UDP port
RCon uses UDP. CFTools gives game port plus three as a convenient example: a game port of 2302 would suggest 2305. That is an example, not a guarantee. Verify that the chosen port is not already used by the game listener, Steam query, another DayZ instance, or a reservation made by your hosting provider.
For a self-hosted Windows machine, inspect listening and bound sockets with the operating system’s network tools before choosing the port. On Linux, check the equivalent socket list. If you run several instances, assign each one a distinct RCon port and document the mapping next to its game port. A port that worked before an update can become unavailable when the provider changes its reserved range or when a second instance is enabled.

Leave RConIP unset unless you need binding
Do not add an RConIP line for a normal installation. Leaving it unset allows BattlEye to listen without accidentally restricting the service to the wrong interface. If you must bind it, use the server’s reachable public address. Do not use 127.0.0.1 or a private 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x address when the client is outside that machine or private network; an external client cannot reach those addresses.
Remove ambiguity in the file
- Keep one active
RConPasswordand one activeRConPortline. Comment out or remove stale duplicates rather than relying on which duplicate BattlEye will parse. - Use the spelling and capitalization shown by the documentation for your platform.
- Do not wrap the password in quotation marks or add inline comments to the value while testing.
- Save as plain text in the original directory and preserve the filename extension.
3. Open every part of the network path
A correct configuration still fails if any layer drops the UDP datagram. Permit the selected RCon port in all applicable locations:

- Host firewall: create an inbound rule for UDP on the RCon port. If your policy is restrictive, permit only the monitoring service’s documented source addresses after an independent test.
- Operating-system firewall: verify that the rule applies to the network profile used by the server and that an outbound policy is not blocking the response packets.
- Router or NAT: forward the same UDP port to the internal address of the DayZ host. Check that the forwarding target did not change after a DHCP lease or hardware replacement.
- Provider firewall: open the port in the host or game-server panel as well as on the operating system. Some provider firewalls report an apparently disabled state while still filtering RCon or query traffic; BattleMetrics specifically warns of this behavior on some OVH GAME installations.
- External address: give the client the public address that actually receives the forward, not the private address shown by the server’s network adapter.
Only expose the RCon port that you need. RCon grants administrative control, so do not open a broad UDP range as a shortcut. If your provider supplies a managed proxy or allowlist, record the exact source addresses it requires before tightening the rule.
4. Restart BattlEye and inspect the fresh logs
Stop and start the complete DayZ server after changing the configuration. BattlEye reads its settings during startup; changing the file while the process is running does not reliably reload the port or password.
After the restart, inspect the profile and BattlEye logs under the active profile path. Look for startup messages that identify the RCon port and show the password as masked, followed by bind or initialization errors if something is wrong. The DayZ documentation identifies the profile directory as the location for server logs, which is why an incorrect -profiles value can make a healthy instance appear silent.
Interpret common startup messages
- Port already in use, bind failed, or cannot listen: another process owns the selected UDP port, or the provider reserves it. Choose a free port and update every firewall and forwarding rule to match.
- Configuration not found: the file is outside the active BattlEye path, has the wrong case on Linux, or the launch parameters changed. Recheck
-profilesand-BEpath. - RCon starts but clients time out: the server loaded the file, so focus on host firewall, NAT, provider filtering, or an incorrect public address.
- Authentication fails immediately: verify the password length, remove spaces or special symbols, and ensure the client is using the current value rather than a saved old password.
5. Test with an independent RCon client
Use the official BE RCon client for Windows or another known-good RCon client before diagnosing a hosted monitoring service. Enter only the server’s public IP or hostname, the configured RConPort, and the password. This test should be performed from a network outside the server’s LAN when possible; a local test can succeed through a loopback or hairpin path that outside players cannot use.

Record the result and the time. A successful login proves that BattlEye parsed the file and that at least one network path works. If the independent client connects but a monitoring service still reports a timeout, the DayZ configuration is no longer the primary suspect. Check that service’s source-IP allowlist, its saved port and password, and any provider-specific proxy or firewall requirement. BattleMetrics recommends this differential test for separating a server fault from a monitoring-path fault.

A failure from every network points toward the configuration, port ownership, or provider firewall; a failure from only one network points toward that network’s egress filtering or DNS/address selection.

Why a DayZ update can break a previously working setup
An update can replace or refresh BattlEye binaries, change the server’s launch wrapper, regenerate profile directories, or leave the old installation beside the new one. The visible symptom is often “RCon stopped,” even though the password and port lines were never edited. The fix is to identify what the new process actually loads rather than copying the old file into an assumed location.
BattlEye states that current client-side and server-side files ship with the game distribution and should be kept current. Verify the DayZ server files through the distribution’s normal verification function before manually replacing BattlEye files. Manual copying can mix versions and create a second, harder-to-diagnose problem.
Choose a direct client or hosted monitoring
Both approaches use the same BattlEye configuration. The operational difference is where the connection originates and how you diagnose it.

Use a direct client as the baseline even if automation is your long-term administration method. Commercial terms and program availability for hosted options can change, so confirm them separately rather than treating a monitoring account as part of the DayZ server software.
Security and maintenance after recovery
- Use a unique RCon password that is not reused for the game panel, operating-system account, or database.
- Limit the UDP rule to the required port and, where practical, to known administrative source addresses.
- Keep the password out of public startup scripts, screenshots, and support posts. Mask it when sharing logs.
- Document the game port, query port, RCon port, profile path, BattlEye path, and firewall owner for each instance.
- After every DayZ update, verify the active launch parameters and confirm that the expected BattlEye log receives a new startup entry.
- Retain the pre-update configuration backup until an independent client and the production monitoring path both pass.
A repeatable post-update procedure
- Stop the server and copy its current BattlEye configuration.
- Read the effective
-profilesand-BEpathvalues from the launch command. - Open the matching platform-specific configuration filename.
- Set one valid
RConPasswordand one freeRConPort; leaveRConIPunset unless binding is intentional. - Update host, operating-system, router, and provider UDP rules for that exact port.
- Start the server and confirm the port and initialization status in fresh logs.
- Connect with an independent RCon client from outside the server’s local network.
- Only after that succeeds, repair or re-enable a hosted monitoring connection and its allowlist.
This sequence keeps each variable isolated: file location, syntax, port ownership, network reachability, authentication, and third-party monitoring. That is why it remains effective even when an update changes the server directory layout or refreshes BattlEye components.
