Set Ghost’s public URL to the exact HTTPS address readers use, keep port 2368 as the private upstream, restart Ghost, and then verify the result from the public hostname.

What localhost:2368 means
Ghost commonly listens on 127.0.0.1:2368 inside the server. That listener is intended for local or proxy-to-application traffic; it is not normally the address you publish to readers. Ghost’s production url setting is the canonical public address used when it builds links and redirects.
When that setting contains http://localhost:2368, Ghost can emit admin links, canonical URLs, asset links, and redirects pointing at the server’s loopback name. A proxy can create a similar failure when it replaces the visitor’s Host header or fails to tell Ghost that the original connection used HTTPS.

Before changing anything
Identify the public address
Write down the complete address readers should use, including scheme, hostname, and (only if genuinely public) a non-standard port. In most production deployments this is an address such as https://example.com or https://blog.example.com. Do not use 127.0.0.1, localhost, an internal container name, or the private port in this value.
Check DNS and TLS first
- The hostname must resolve to the proxy or server that receives public traffic.
- A certificate must cover that hostname if you are using HTTPS.
- Decide which component terminates TLS: nginx, a load balancer, a container gateway, or another proxy.
- Know how Ghost is started so you can restart the correct process after editing configuration.
Fix a Ghost CLI or manual installation
Ghost CLI
From the Ghost installation directory, set the canonical URL with Ghost CLI and restart the service:

ghost restartReplace the example with the exact public hostname. Include https:// when TLS is enabled; do not append :2368 merely because Ghost uses that port internally.
Manual configuration
If you do not use Ghost CLI, edit the active production configuration file (normally the production configuration JSON in your Ghost installation) and set its url property:

}Preserve the other settings in the file and make sure the edited file is the one used by the production process. Installation layouts vary, so do not assume a path copied from another server is correct. Restart the service after saving the change.
Confirm that the setting actually loaded
A successful edit is not enough if Ghost is running from a different directory, under a different environment, or from a container. Check the process logs or service status after the restart and confirm that the process is listening on the expected internal address. Then test the public hostname rather than opening port 2368 directly.
Keep port 2368 private behind nginx
The normal arrangement is:

An nginx location should pass the original host and client protocol information while proxying to Ghost:

Host: tells Ghost which public hostname the request used. If it becomes an internal name, generated links can point to that name.X-Forwarded-Proto: tells Ghost whether the visitor used HTTP or HTTPS. If HTTPS was terminated before nginx but Ghost receives a value equivalent to HTTP, Ghost may redirect to HTTPS repeatedly.X-Forwarded-ForandX-Real-IP: preserve client-address information for logging and request handling.
When another load balancer terminates TLS
If a load balancer accepts HTTPS and then sends plain HTTP to nginx, nginx’s $scheme may be http even though the visitor used HTTPS. In that design, ensure the final request reaching Ghost carries X-Forwarded-Proto: https. Configure the trusted proxy or load balancer according to its documentation, and avoid blindly overwriting a correct value with the internal hop’s scheme.

Fix Ghost in Docker
Container networking and Ghost’s canonical URL are separate settings. Publishing host port 8080 to container port 2368 (for example, 8080:2368) changes how the host reaches the container; it does not tell Ghost which address to advertise.
Set the Ghost container’s url environment variable to the externally reachable address:

- "8080:2368"Use the image tag and persistent-volume settings appropriate for your deployment. The important distinction is that url contains the public hostname, while the container can continue listening on port 2368. If a reverse proxy sits in front of the container, configure that proxy to preserve Host and the correct forwarded protocol as well.
Restart the container after changing the variable
Environment variables are read when the container starts. Recreate or restart the Ghost container using your normal Compose or container-management workflow, then inspect its logs for startup errors. Editing a host-side file without recreating a container that receives its configuration from environment variables will not change the running process.

Development and tunnel setups are different
In a development environment, http://localhost:2368 can be intentional. Ghost’s development documentation notes that links continue to use that address until a forwarding URL is placed in the local configuration and the environment is restarted.
Local development
- Keep localhost when the site is meant to be opened only on the development machine.
- Do not treat a localhost link as a production failure if no public hostname is intended.
- If you need to share the development site through a tunnel, use the tunnel’s forwarding URL in the local Ghost configuration and restart the development environment.
Temporary tunnels
A tunnel hostname can change between sessions. Set the current forwarding URL only while that tunnel is active, and expect links to become invalid when the address changes. For a stable public site, use a stable DNS name and production configuration instead of a temporary tunnel URL.
Stop HTTPS redirect loops
A typical loop looks like this: the browser requests HTTPS, a proxy terminates TLS, the proxy talks HTTP to Ghost, Ghost believes the original request was insecure and redirects to HTTPS, and the browser repeats the request. The fix is not to expose port 2368; it is to preserve the original protocol.
- Confirm the public URL in Ghost is the HTTPS address, such as
https://example.com. - Identify where TLS terminates.
- Ensure the proxy chain passes
X-Forwarded-Proto: httpsto Ghost for an HTTPS visitor. - Ensure the public
Hostsurvives every proxy hop. - Restart Ghost and reload the proxy after configuration changes.
- Retest from the public hostname, not from the internal upstream.
If several proxies are involved, inspect their effective configuration rather than assuming the first proxy’s headers reach Ghost unchanged. A later hop that resets the header to http can recreate the loop.

Verify the repair without stale browser redirects
Browsers can cache permanent redirects, so test independently of an old browser result.
Private-window check
Open the public hostname in a private or incognito window. This avoids many cached cookies and redirect decisions, although it is not a substitute for checking the server response.
Inspect response headers with curl
curl -I https://example.comLook for the status and any Location header. A redirect to localhost:2368 means some active configuration still advertises that address. A repeated sequence between HTTP and HTTPS points to protocol forwarding or TLS-termination settings. Test the exact hostname configured in Ghost; testing an IP address or an alternate alias can produce a different result.
Check generated links
After the response is correct, open a page and inspect links, canonical metadata, feeds, and asset URLs. They should use the public scheme and hostname. If only one integration still emits localhost, locate that integration’s separate base-URL setting rather than changing Ghost’s listener port.
Troubleshooting by symptom

- Choose one canonical public URL, including
https://when applicable. - Set Ghost’s production

The deciding questions are always the same: what address should readers see, which component terminates TLS, whether the proxy preserves host and protocol, and which process must be restarted to load the change.
