If ReShade crashes, shows a black screen, or loads without its effects in an older game, first identify whether the problem is injection, the game’s rendering API, or the preset and shader files. ReShade must be installed for the game’s actual executable and the renderer it uses; older Direct3D 8, DirectDraw, or Glide titles may also need a compatibility wrapper. Change one thing at a time and keep a way to undo it.
Identify what is failing
The symptom helps narrow the cause. If the ReShade overlay never appears, start by checking the executable and rendering API selected during setup. If the game crashes before gameplay or opens to a black screen, test ReShade version and software conflicts, then investigate any wrapper or API-specific change. If the overlay appears but effects are missing, check the active preset and its required shader files.
- ReShade is absent: check the target executable and renderer.
- The game crashes or goes black: isolate overlays, ReShade, and compatibility changes.
- The overlay appears but effects do not: check preset selection and shader files.
Check the executable and rendering API
Run ReShade setup for the game’s actual executable, not just its launcher. Setup can try to identify the renderer from executable modules and compatibility data, but automatic detection can be wrong. The ReShade FAQ recommends checking which API the game uses and selecting it during setup: ReShade’s Easy Troubleshooting FAQ. The setup source lists pathways for Direct3D 9, DXGI/Direct3D 10–12, DirectDraw, OpenGL, and Vulkan; the correct selection depends on the game and any wrappers already installed: ReShade setup source.
- Find the game executable that actually starts the game.
- Check the game’s documentation or a reliable compatibility listing to determine its renderer.
- Run ReShade setup against that executable and select the matching API.
- Launch the game and check whether the overlay appears before making another change.
Use a compatibility route for legacy renderers
Some older games use renderers ReShade does not target directly in the same way as newer games. A wrapper can translate the game’s renderer into one ReShade can target, but it adds another compatibility layer and can cause visual problems, performance issues, or crashes. Back up the game folder and follow the wrapper’s current instructions; do not treat these routes as guaranteed fixes.

Direct3D 8: convert to Direct3D 9
The ReShade FAQ’s route for a Direct3D 8 game is to use d3d8to9. Place its d3d8.dll beside the game executable, then choose Direct3D 9 in ReShade setup. Make this change only after confirming the game uses Direct3D 8.
DirectX 1–7, DirectDraw, or Glide
The FAQ describes using DXGL or dgVoodoo2 as wrapper options before installing ReShade. DXGL exposes OpenGL, so select OpenGL in ReShade setup. dgVoodoo2 exposes a Direct3D 10+ interface; select the corresponding Direct3D option in setup. The FAQ identifies dgVoodoo2 as the option compatible with Glide. Which route works depends on the game’s renderer and feature requirements. See the FAQ’s legacy-game guidance before changing files.
Troubleshoot startup crashes and black screens
Update ReShade and isolate software conflicts
The FAQ identifies ReShade version problems and conflicts with third-party overlays or injectors as possible causes of startup crashes. Temporarily disable overlay or monitoring programs one at a time; MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner are examples named in the FAQ. Test the game after each change so you can identify what affected it. The startup-crash guidance does not establish one universal fix for every game or black screen.

For DirectX 11, test the DLL-name workaround cautiously
For a DirectX 11 game, the FAQ suggests trying a rename from dxgi to d3d11. Treat this as a targeted compatibility test, not a general remedy: preserve the original filename and reverse the change if it does not help.

For wrapped games, add one layer at a time
First launch the game without ReShade or wrapper modifications. Then add the wrapper by itself and test; add ReShade afterward and test again. This makes it easier to identify which layer causes a crash or visual issue when multiple hooks or wrappers interact.
Fix an overlay with missing effects
If ReShade’s overlay appears but the expected effects are absent, confirm that the intended preset is selected and that every shader file it requires is present in the shader folder. A preset created for an older ReShade version may not work with a newer one. The FAQ also gives a recovery path when setup fails to download the standard shader archive: download the official shader repository and put its Shaders and Textures folders in the ReShade folder under the game path. Follow the preset and shader guidance for details.

- Open the ReShade overlay and check which preset is active.
- Check the preset’s required shader files against the installed shader folders.
- If the preset targets an older ReShade version, try a compatible preset or version rather than assuming the game’s injection is broken.
- If the standard shader archive download failed, use the FAQ’s repository-folder workaround.
Remove ReShade without deleting a game file by mistake
The ReShade FAQ describes uninstalling through the setup tool. Manual removal may involve ReShade configuration or preset INI files, the API proxy DLL (for example, d3d9.dll, d3d11.dll, dxgi.dll, or opengl32.dll), and the reshade-shaders folder. A DLL with one of these names may instead belong to the game or another required component. Confirm its origin before deleting it; the setup tool itself warns when a target proxy DLL is not identified as ReShade. See the FAQ’s uninstall instructions and the setup source.
If ReShade setup itself crashes
The FAQ’s .NET Framework 4.8 note applies to ReShade versions from 4.4, so it is historical, version-specific advice—not a universal requirement for current setup releases. Check the guidance for the particular setup version you are using rather than applying that older note to every installation.
