To improve FPS and reduce choppiness in a first-person Soulslike, first compare your PC with that game’s official requirements, then test changes one at a time: lower demanding graphics settings, close background programs and overlays, update Windows and graphics drivers, and check that a laptop is using its discrete GPU. These are PC troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes. The game and platform are unspecified, so check the publisher’s current requirements and known-issues page before following any game-specific instructions.
Start by identifying the setup and the symptom
Before changing settings, note the game, platform, operating system, CPU, graphics card and VRAM, system memory, driver version, display resolution and refresh rate, and current graphics settings. Console players should use the game publisher’s console-specific support material; the Windows, Steam, driver, and shader-cache steps below are for PC.
Describe what “stutter” or “lag” means in your case. Is FPS low all the time, or does the game hitch during camera turns, combat effects, loading, in particular locations, or only after a long session? Note whether restarting changes the behavior. These patterns help narrow the issue, but do not by themselves identify its cause.
Check the game’s requirements and known issues
Compare your PC with the named game’s official minimum and recommended requirements. Meeting the minimum does not promise high FPS or smooth performance; Steam specifically cautions that meeting requirements does not guarantee high performance (Steam Support: Troubleshooting Game Performance Issues – Software). Capcom likewise advises lowering settings when a system meets minimum but not recommended specifications (Capcom Support: Troubleshooting for Steam games).

Check the publisher’s current support page or status information for known performance issues, recent patches, and instructions that apply to your game. Advice can differ between games: do not assume that a particular graphics option, cache procedure, or fix applies to every first-person Soulslike.
Reduce graphics load and isolate changes
Try lower settings when the PC is below the recommended tier
Start with a lower preset, or reduce selected settings, then test the same location or activity where the problem is reproducible. Change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped. If a game requires a restart for a setting to take effect, restart before judging the result. There is no universal “best” preset or guaranteed FPS gain without knowing the game and hardware.

Close background apps and overlays as a test
Temporarily close resource-heavy programs, including recording software and performance-overlay applications. Capcom lists background applications and overlays among troubleshooting considerations. If closing one changes performance, reopen programs individually to identify whether a particular one is involved; do not treat disabling everything as a permanent fix without evidence.
Update Windows and graphics drivers; check GPU selection
Install current Windows updates and graphics drivers, then restart after installing a driver. If you play on a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, check that the game is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU. Capcom includes driver updates, Windows updates, and selecting the discrete GPU on dual-graphics laptops in its PC troubleshooting guidance (Capcom Support: Troubleshooting for Steam games).

Verify game files and handle shader caches only with game-specific guidance
If files may be damaged, use the official file-verification procedure for the storefront or launcher where you own the game. The exact menu path varies by platform and storefront, so follow its current instructions rather than an unrelated game’s guide.
Shader-cache advice is also game-specific. Capcom says damaged shader-cache files can cause some graphical issues. Square Enix describes a separate case in which a supported game compiles its cache on first play; that process may take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications (Square Enix Support: The game stutters despite meeting the recommended PC specifications). That duration and behavior are not general guidance for other games. Do not delete or compile a cache unless the actual game’s support instructions tell you how.

Consider heat and power without guessing
Make sure the PC has adequate ventilation and that its vents are not obstructed. Capcom notes, “Gameplay may not be as smooth if your PC generates too much heat,” and suggests reducing settings or limiting frame rate to reduce heat (Capcom Support: Troubleshooting for Steam games). A long-session slowdown can be worth documenting, but it does not prove thermal throttling; that diagnosis requires measurements. A cooling pad is not an established cure for stutter.

- Game title, platform, operating system, CPU, GPU and VRAM, system memory, driver version, resolution, and graphics settings.
- Where and when the stutter happens, what is occurring in-game, and whether it is constant or began after a particular patch or session.
- Steps that reliably reproduce the issue, whether restarting changes it, and which settings or background apps you tested.
- A short video or screenshots if they help show the location or symptom.
Capcom’s support guidance also asks users to provide system and symptom details (Capcom Support: Troubleshooting for Steam games). If a change has no effect, restore it where appropriate and continue testing rather than assuming it fixed or caused the problem. If the hitching occurs only in one game or location, report that specificity.
