If Resident Evil 7 will not start, crashes, or fails during a cutscene on PC, work through the checks that match the symptom: confirm the PC meets the game’s requirements, check whether security software is blocking it, update and select the correct graphics hardware, then verify the Steam files. Codec changes are relevant mainly when video playback is the problem. If the crash continues, collect system details and any CrashReport files for Capcom support.
Check that your PC meets Resident Evil 7’s requirements
Compare your hardware and Windows installation with the current Steam listing, accessed October 8, 2026. These are published targets, not a guarantee of identical performance on every PC.
| Specification | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 | Not stated in the Steam listing |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-4460 or AMD FX-6300 | Intel Core i7-3770 or AMD equivalent |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 8 GB RAM |
| Graphics | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 or AMD Radeon RX 460 | GeForce GTX 1060 with 3 GB VRAM |
| DirectX | Version 12 | Version 12 |
| Available storage | 24 GB | 24 GB |
| Listed performance target | 1080p/30 FPS; Steam notes texture quality may need to be reduced or texture streaming turned off because of VRAM requirements | 1080p/60 FPS |
See Steam’s Resident Evil 7 system requirements. Capcom cautions that a PC below minimum specifications may run the game poorly or not run it. If your PC meets minimum but falls short of recommended specifications, lower graphics settings and restart the game after making changes. Requirements alone do not establish that any particular setting or component is causing a crash.
If the game does not launch, check security software
Capcom says antivirus software can sometimes falsely block the game executable. Check your antivirus and firewall rules for exclusions for the game, Steam, and Steam’s local AppData folder. Do not turn off protection permanently; use exclusions for the relevant files and folders instead.

Steam may be installed elsewhere, so use your actual installation paths rather than assuming these defaults. If exclusions already exist, Capcom recommends removing them and adding them again. Follow Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 Steam troubleshooting steps for the game-specific guidance.
Update graphics software and select the high-performance GPU
Capcom recommends updating the graphics driver and Windows, and checking that the game uses the dedicated, high-performance GPU on laptops that have both integrated and dedicated graphics. Graphics control-panel menus differ by GPU and manufacturer, so consult the instructions for your laptop or graphics hardware rather than relying on a universal menu path.

- Players take on the role of Leon S Kennedy
- Mission to save the president's daughter from danger
- Challenging environments and strategic combat scenarios await
- Install current graphics drivers and Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- On a hybrid-graphics laptop, assign Resident Evil 7 to the high-performance GPU using the available graphics settings.
- Check the laptop’s power settings and keep it connected to its charger while testing.
Capcom notes that disabling integrated graphics through BIOS may be an option, but BIOS settings vary. Do not change them unless you understand the device-specific instructions.
Check DirectX, cutscene codecs, and the Steam installation
Update or check DirectX
DirectX 12 is listed in the game’s requirements, and Capcom recommends checking that DirectX is up to date. If the game fails to launch or crashes, this is one of the software checks to make alongside the graphics driver and Windows updates.

Use codec guidance only for video playback problems
Capcom says some cutscene segments rely on the Windows Media Player codec. Certain Windows editions, especially N editions, may not include the required media components. If the problem is cutscene video playback, check whether your Windows edition needs Microsoft’s Media Feature Pack. This is not a universal fix for crashes or a game that will not launch. Capcom also warns that another installed codec may cause compatibility issues.
Verify the game files in Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click Resident Evil 7 and choose Properties.
- Open the installed or local files area and select Verify integrity of game files. The tab name can vary with Steam’s interface version.
- Let Steam complete the check and reacquire any missing or damaged files, then try launching the game again.
Capcom recommends this check even when the game was installed recently.

If it still crashes, narrow down the failure and prepare a support request
Capcom’s general Steam troubleshooting guide suggests closing resource-heavy applications and performance overlays, deleting the game’s shader cache when appropriate, disabling Compatibility Mode if it is enabled, and checking display settings and PC ventilation. These are general checks, not proof that any one of them caused a particular Resident Evil 7 crash. See Capcom’s general Steam troubleshooting guide.
For a support request, record the details Capcom asks for so the failure can be diagnosed more effectively:
