First work out whether the problem is network delay or choppy game performance: delayed actions and characters jumping or rubber-banding point toward connection checks, while low frame rate and hitching point toward performance troubleshooting. There is no confirmed universal fix for Risk of Rain 2 multiplayer lag on PS5, but the steps below help narrow down what to try.
Tell network delay apart from choppy performance
“Lag” can describe different symptoms. If actions register late, or players jump or rubber-band across the screen, start with the connection checks below. If the picture hitches, frame rate drops, or movement looks sluggish even when nobody is interacting online, investigate performance instead. This is a useful first distinction, not a conclusive test: 2K lists “Network Troubleshooting” separately from “Low Frame Rates/Poor Performance,” but does not provide a definitive test for this PS5 symptom.

Work through the connection checks
- Check PlayStation Network status. PlayStation recommends checking its service status when troubleshooting a PS5 server-connection error. The live status can change, and a service issue may be outside your home network’s control. See PlayStation’s NW-102650-4 connection guidance.
- Restart the PS5. A restart is one of PlayStation’s general connection troubleshooting steps. After it comes back online, join the same kind of session and see whether the symptom changes.
- Make the connection easier to test. If using Wi-Fi, try moving the console closer to the router and reducing obstacles between them. If possible, compare a session over Ethernet; use a cable you already have if available. PlayStation recommends wired networking where possible for the cited connection issue, but this comparison is diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix for Risk of Rain 2 lag.
- Restart the modem and router. Power them off for at least five minutes, then restore power and wait for the connection to return before testing again. This is general PlayStation connection guidance, not a title-specific latency remedy.
Update the PS5 system software
PlayStation’s path for checking updates is Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available. PlayStation’s setup path for network connections is Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection. The steps are documented in PlayStation’s connectivity help; 2K also directs PlayStation players to the platform’s firmware update instructions.

Try 2K’s game troubleshooting if the problem remains
2K’s Risk of Rain 2 troubleshooting page, published November 11, 2024 and updated July 7, 2026, separates network issues from low frame rates and poor performance. It recommends clearing the cache using the instructions for the relevant platform and checking console firmware. These are general troubleshooting steps; 2K does not say they specifically resolve PS5 multiplayer latency.
If the issue seems related to game content or files, 2K advises reinstalling DLC first. If that does not help, reinstall the full game and its DLC. Reinstalling is more disruptive than checking network status or restarting, so try the simpler checks first. Follow 2K’s platform-specific directions rather than assuming steps for another console apply to PS5.

Escalate with details that help narrow it down
If you contact 2K or PlayStation support, describe what you observe and when. Include whether the problem affects one player or everyone in the session, whether it also happens over Ethernet, whether solo play hitches, the date and time, and any error code. These details are useful context, not an official required checklist. 2K provides a support request route through its troubleshooting page.
