They can show whether a match problem is high latency, unstable ping, packet loss, a server-health issue, or a lost connection—different problems that call for different checks. Then check Xbox and Epic service status, verify your game region, and work through the network steps below. These are troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed fixes.
Identify what kind of lag you’re seeing
In Rocket League, open Settings > Interface and enable Connection Quality Indicators. During a match, use the indicator to narrow down the symptom:

- Server Health: Points toward a server-side issue.
- Packet Loss: Some data being transferred between you and the server is lost.
- Latency Variation: Your ping is not steady.
- High Latency: Usually means high ping to the server; Epic describes this as commonly known as lag.
- Disconnected: The connection to the server was lost.
These indicators help distinguish connection problems rather than treating every stutter or delay as the same fault. See Epic’s Rocket League platform connection guide for its descriptions of the indicators.
Work through Xbox and network checks

Check whether a service is having trouble
Check Xbox network status and Epic Games Status when the issue is happening. If a service incident is listed, changing your home network settings may not help; check the status pages again for updates.

Confirm the selected game region
Check Rocket League’s selected game region and choose an appropriate region for connection performance. Also confirm that you are not trying to play from a restricted region. Epic includes these checks in its Xbox connection troubleshooting guide.

Restart your modem or router
Restart the modem or router, then reconnect and see whether the same in-game indicator returns. This is a basic troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that the cause is inside your home network.

Test a wired connection
Epic’s instruction is: “Make sure you are playing on a wired connection.” If the Xbox is currently on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with Ethernet and test another match. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is an optional way to try this if you do not already have a suitable cable; it is not required to play and cannot resolve an Xbox or Epic outage, or an upstream ISP or routing problem.

Reduce competing network use
Temporarily pause downloads and reduce other devices’ network use, including streaming, then test again. This can help determine whether other activity on the home connection is contributing to the problem.

Consider public DNS only after the earlier checks
Epic lists switching to a public DNS as a further connection troubleshooting option. DNS changes are not established as a way to lower match ping for every player. Follow current official setup instructions for your network rather than assuming a particular DNS value or Xbox menu path will improve latency.
If the connection indicators look normal, check display settings separately
Frame rate and display refresh rate are separate from network latency. If the game looks choppy or feels visually wrong but the connection indicators do not point to a network issue, check that the Xbox display configuration and Rocket League FPS setting match your display.

On Xbox, go to Settings > General > TV & display options and enable 120 Hz if your display supports it.

In Rocket League, choose the FPS option that matches the display refresh rate.

Epic’s 120 FPS instructions for Xbox Series X|S note that Xbox Series S does not include the HDMI 2.1 cable needed for 120 Hz. This setting guidance concerns display and frame-rate configuration; it does not establish a fix for high ping, packet loss, or server-side trouble.
