First check Epic Games Public Status. If Fortnite, Login, or Matchmaking is experiencing an incident or scheduled maintenance, wait for Epic’s update and try again afterward. If those services are operational, test the Switch’s internet connection, then work through the local checks below. The message is a connection symptom; by itself, it does not show whether Epic’s servers or your network are at fault.
1. Check whether Fortnite services are having a problem
On Epic’s status page, check Fortnite and the Login and Matchmaking components. If a relevant incident or maintenance is listed, wait for Epic to report that service has recovered before troubleshooting your console. Changing Switch network settings or reinstalling the game cannot resolve a server-side outage.
Service status changes over time. When this was checked on October 8, 2026, Epic listed the Fortnite components as operational and reported no incidents for that date. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that the service is available when you read this. Epic’s history also lists scheduled Fortnite v42.30 downtime on October 1, 2026, with matchmaking disabled 30 minutes before scheduled maintenance—an example of why the current status matters.
2. Test the Switch’s internet connection
- On the Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection. Menu labels may vary by system language.
- Check that the console is connected to the Wi-Fi network you intend to use. To review or set up a network, go to HOME → System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings, select its network name (SSID), and enter the password if prompted.
- If the connection test fails, follow the error code or result shown on the console and resolve that local connection issue first. If it succeeds, it confirms the network path at that moment; it does not guarantee that Fortnite can reach Epic’s services.
Nintendo recommends placing the console about 2–3 metres from the wireless router during Wi-Fi setup. If the connection is unstable, try setup or play closer to the router and consult Nintendo’s wireless connection guidance.

3. Restart the game and console
If Epic reports normal service and the Switch passes its connection test, close Fortnite, restart the console, and launch the game again. Then check for available Fortnite and Switch system updates. If Fortnite alone still cannot connect while other online functions work, note that distinction for support.
4. Install the latest Switch system update
Open System Settings → System → System Update and follow the prompts if an update is available. Nintendo’s system update page listed version 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026; versions change, so check Nintendo’s current system update information. Updating is a general connection troubleshooting step, not a Fortnite-specific guaranteed fix.

5. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection (optional)
If Wi-Fi seems unstable and compatible equipment is available, a wired test can help you compare connection paths. Nintendo’s setup requirements depend on the hardware:
- Switch OLED: the HEG-007 dock has a built-in LAN port.
- Original Switch dock: a separately sold LAN adapter is required.
- Switch Lite: additional equipment is needed for wired connectivity.
See Nintendo’s wired connection setup instructions for the relevant hardware. This is an optional diagnostic, not a required purchase or a fix for an Epic service outage.

6. Contact the right support team
If the error continues, record the full Switch connection-test result or error code, when it happened, whether other Switch online functions work, and whether other devices on the same network can get online. Contact Nintendo for console or network errors; contact Epic for Fortnite service or account-access problems.

What not to try first
- Do not assume the error means Fortnite is globally down or that the Switch is defective; check Epic’s status and the console’s connection test first.
- Do not treat a particular DNS server, port-forwarding recipe, or NAT setting as a universal solution. Official guidance does not establish those as guaranteed fixes for this message.
- Avoid resetting router settings or deleting and reinstalling Fortnite as first steps before ruling out a service incident and checking the local connection.
