To fix Squad lag, first determine whether you mean network delay—high or spiking ping, packet loss, or rubber-banding—or local stutter such as frame drops and freezing. Network troubleshooting will not fix an underperforming PC, and changing graphics settings will not fix a bad connection. Work through the checks below, changing one thing at a time.
First, tell network lag from PC stutter
Network lag is a delay between your action and the server’s response. Delayed damage registration and rubber-banding are common examples. Frame drops, uneven motion, or a brief freeze can instead point to local performance. The distinction matters because ping and connection checks address network symptoms, while a frame-rate problem needs PC-performance troubleshooting.
- Likely connection issue: your character snaps back, actions register late, or the problem changes between servers.
- Likely local stutter: the image hitches or freezes even when your connection appears steady. Check in-game frame rate and whether the issue is limited to Squad before changing network equipment.
Check whether the server or route is the problem
Try another server, and if possible choose one closer to your region. Distance can increase the time data takes to travel, and an individual server or route can have trouble even when your home connection is otherwise working. Ask whether other players report the same issue, and check current official Squad updates or server notices before assuming your PC or network is at fault.
Squad’s official notes report that version 10.5.5, published September 10, 2026, addressed server-side exploits that caused server crashes and queue disruption. That is dated context, not proof that a current lag problem has the same cause. Check the official Squad updates for newer notices.

Test your home connection
Try Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi
Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same in-game test. This is a useful way to isolate wireless interference or instability; it is general multiplayer troubleshooting guidance, not a guaranteed Squad fix. Riot recommends switching to wired Ethernet where possible, and EA notes that Ethernet usually provides a more stable connection. If you cannot run a cable, try the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band when you are close enough: 5 GHz can be faster and more stable, while 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther. Results vary with the router, distance, walls, and interference.
Remove competing network activity
Pause large downloads, streaming, cloud backups, and other heavy network use on your PC and other devices while testing. Then restart Squad. If the connection still behaves badly, restarting the router and modem may help clear a temporary home-network problem; follow your provider’s instructions for those devices.

Temporarily disconnect VPN or proxy software
Disable a VPN or proxy briefly while diagnosing, then test again. These services can add routing complexity or cause connection problems. Do not buy a VPN expecting it to reduce Squad lag; the effect depends on the route and provider and is not established as a general fix.
Understand the connection indicators
Ping is the round-trip time for data to travel between your PC and the game server. Packet loss means some data does not complete that trip, while jitter is variation in ping over time. Each can affect play differently, and a speed-test download figure does not describe them. If Squad or a trustworthy diagnostic shows these indicators, note their values and when the problem occurs. Squad’s published requirements do not specify a target ping, packet-loss limit, or minimum connection speed, so there is no official universal “good ping” cutoff to apply.

Update Squad and compare its PC requirements
Make sure the game is updated, then relaunch it so it can sync with the current servers. Offworld Industries’ September 17, 2026 version 10.5.6 hotfix says it improves client stability and addresses crashes and vulnerabilities; it asks players to relaunch to download the latest build and sync with updated servers. This update context does not establish that it will resolve every player’s lag.

If the problem persists across multiple servers after an Ethernet test and a quiet-network test, record the server, time, region, and any available ping, packet-loss, or jitter readings. Contact your ISP if the issue appears across games or services, and contact the server host if it is confined to one server. Congestion can occur inside the home, at the ISP, or farther along the route; more download bandwidth alone does not necessarily resolve latency or packet loss. Upgrade or replace a router only when testing points to faulty or inadequate home hardware.
