Start with the device clock, then complete any Wi-Fi sign-in, test the page in a private window, and update both the browser and operating system. If the error appears on every HTTPS site, investigate your network, antivirus HTTPS scanning, or an enterprise proxy. If it affects one domain, the site usually has an expired, mismatched, self-signed, or incomplete certificate chain that only its administrator can repair.

Do not install a certificate from an unknown source or force your way past a warning on a banking, email, game-account, or other sensitive site. A certificate warning means the browser cannot prove that the encrypted connection belongs to the intended server.

Modern browsers use TLS (often still called SSL) to encrypt traffic and authenticate a website. During the connection, the server presents a certificate containing its hostnames, validity dates, public key, and a signature from a trusted certificate authority. The browser checks that certificate, the intermediate certificates leading to a trusted root, the requested hostname, the validity period, and the negotiated TLS settings.
An error appears when one of those checks fails. The failure may be on your device, on the local network, or on the website itself; the warning does not automatically mean the website is malicious. It does mean the browser cannot safely verify the connection at that moment.

- TLS incompatibility: The server uses an obsolete protocol, cipher, or signature algorithm.
The exact wording varies by browser release. Chrome may show a message such as NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID or NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID; Firefox commonly shows SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER or MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED.
Follow this order for the safest first fix
- Record the exact error code and whether one site or every HTTPS site fails.
- Verify the date, time, and time zone on the device.
- On public Wi-Fi, complete the captive-portal sign-in from an ordinary
http://page. - Retry in a private or Incognito window, then disable a suspect extension.
- Update the browser and operating system.
- Test another network, such as a trusted phone hotspot.
- Check antivirus HTTPS scanning and any configured proxy, following the safety rules below.
- If only one domain fails, inspect its certificate and report the problem to that site instead of bypassing it.
This sequence separates client-side problems from a broken server without weakening certificate validation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Correct the device clock
An incorrect date, time, or time zone is one of the most common causes of NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID and similar messages. Certificates have strict validity windows. A clock set years in the past can make a newly issued certificate appear not yet valid; a clock set in the future can make it appear expired.
Windows 11
- Open Settings and choose Time & language → Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically, if available.
- Use Sync now, confirm the displayed time zone, and close the browser completely.
- Reopen the browser and load the page again.
macOS
- Open System Settings → General → Date & Time.
- Enable automatic date and time and automatic time-zone detection.
- Verify that the location and time zone are correct, then retry the page.
iPhone, iPad, and Android
In the device’s date-and-time settings, enable the network-provided or automatic date, time, and time zone options. Restart the browser after changing them. If the clock repeatedly resets, the device may have a failing battery, management policy, or time-sync service; fix that underlying issue rather than repeatedly bypassing warnings.
Computers managed by an organization
Do not change a company-managed clock or time-sync policy without approval. A domain controller or management profile may be supplying the time. Ask IT to correct the authoritative time source.

2. Finish the public Wi-Fi sign-in
Cafés, airports, hotels, schools, and similar networks often place new devices behind a captive portal. Until you accept the terms or enter a password, the network may redirect every request to its login page. An HTTPS request cannot be redirected safely without creating a certificate mismatch, so the browser can display a privacy warning even though the destination site has a valid certificate.
- Connect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Open a plain
http://page, not an HTTPS page. Any ordinary non-encrypted page that does not require an account can trigger the portal. - Complete the sign-in, terms acceptance, or room-number/password step.
- Close the portal tab, then reload the original HTTPS page.
If the portal never appears, disconnect and reconnect, forget and rejoin the network, or ask the venue to authorize your device. Avoid entering banking or email credentials until the portal is complete and the address bar shows the intended secure domain.
3. Test privately and update software
Use a private window
Open Chrome Incognito, Firefox Private Browsing, or the equivalent mode in your browser and visit the same address. Private windows usually start without your normal extensions and use a clean session. If the warning disappears, an extension, cached state, or stored proxy-related setting is a likely contributor.
Disable extensions selectively
Return to a normal window and disable recently installed extensions one at a time, especially traffic filters, VPN helpers, parental-control tools, and security add-ons. Reload after each change. Remove an extension that reproduces the error; do not leave all security controls disabled as a permanent fix.
Install current updates
Update the browser from its built-in About or Help page and install pending operating-system updates. Browser trust stores, root certificates, TLS implementations, and error handling change over time. Restart the device when an update requests it, then test again.

4. Check antivirus HTTPS scanning and proxies safely
Some endpoint-security products inspect encrypted traffic. They create a local certificate authority, decrypt the connection, scan it, and re-encrypt it with a replacement certificate. A company gateway can do the same. If the replacement authority is absent from the browser or operating system trust store, the browser reports an unknown issuer or man-in-the-middle error.
Temporary diagnostic test
If you control the computer, temporarily pause the antivirus feature commonly labeled HTTPS scanning, encrypted-traffic inspection, or SSL inspection. Test one known-safe page, then immediately turn the feature back on. This is a diagnosis, not a recommendation to browse unprotected indefinitely. If disabling the feature resolves the warning, update the security software or ask its vendor or administrator to correct its trusted certificate installation.
Enterprise networks
On a managed network, the approved inspection certificate should be distributed by the organization’s device-management system. Ask the administrator to install or repair that approved trust certificate and to verify the proxy policy. Do not download a certificate from an email, pop-up, forum, or unfamiliar website. Google Chrome Help states: “It isn’t recommended that you install a certificate on your own, as it’s usually a security risk.”
Check proxy settings
Review the operating system’s proxy settings and the browser’s connection settings for an unexpected manual proxy or automatic-configuration script. On a work device, a proxy may be intentional; remove or change it only with authorization. On a personal device, an unfamiliar proxy that appeared without explanation warrants a malware scan and a review of recently installed software.
5. Determine whether the problem is local or limited to one site
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Every HTTPS site fails on one device | Wrong clock, outdated trust store, antivirus interception, proxy, malware, or damaged network settings | Correct time, update software, test another network, then investigate security software and proxies |
| Every HTTPS site fails on several devices on the same network | Captive portal, router filtering, or enterprise TLS interception | Complete Wi-Fi sign-in and contact the network administrator |
| Only one domain fails everywhere | Expired certificate, hostname mismatch, missing intermediate, self-signed certificate, or server TLS configuration | Check the hostname and report the fault to the site owner; do not bypass it |
| Only one browser fails | Browser-specific trust store, extension, cached policy, or outdated release | Use a private window, disable extensions, update, and compare with another current browser |
| The warning appears only on public Wi-Fi | Captive portal or network interception | Open an ordinary HTTP page and finish authentication before using HTTPS |
Use another network as a control
Connect the same device to a trusted phone hotspot or another network. If the page works there, the original network is imposing the problem. If it fails everywhere while other sites work, the domain’s certificate or TLS configuration is more likely at fault. Do not treat a successful alternate-network test as proof that the original network is safe; it only helps locate the failure.

Inspect the certificate without accepting it
Use the browser’s certificate-details control on the warning page or address-bar security panel. Menu labels vary by release, but the details should show the subject, covered hostnames, issuer, validity dates, and chain. Compare the requested hostname with the certificate’s names. A certificate for a different domain, an expired date, or an issuer you do not recognize explains the warning; it does not make bypassing safe.
6. Fix the specific browser error
| Browser message | What it usually indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID |
Device clock error or an expired/not-yet-valid server certificate | Correct the clock first. If it is correct, test another network and report the site’s certificate dates to its owner. |
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID |
Unknown issuer, missing intermediate, or interception by security software/proxy | Check the network and inspection settings. Never install an unverified root certificate. |
ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID |
Hostname in the address bar is not covered by the certificate | Check for a typing error, redirect, or wrong domain. The site operator must correct the certificate names. |
ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM |
The server uses an obsolete or unsafe signature algorithm | Update the server certificate and TLS configuration; a visitor cannot safely repair this locally. |
ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED |
Chrome requires evidence that the certificate was publicly logged correctly | The certificate issuer or site operator must correct issuance or logging. |
SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER |
Firefox cannot build a trusted chain to a recognized authority | Check for a missing intermediate, enterprise inspection, antivirus interception, or an untrusted self-signed certificate. |
MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED |
Firefox detected a likely man-in-the-middle or locally substituted certificate | Investigate the proxy, antivirus, managed network, or malware. Do not add the presented certificate blindly. |
Firefox’s official guidance says that when it cannot validate a certificate, it stops the connection and displays a “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” page. The wording and available details can change between releases, but the trust decision remains the same.
7. When HSTS removes the bypass option
HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) tells a browser to use HTTPS and to reject certificate failures rather than falling back to an insecure connection. If validation fails for an HSTS host, the browser generally removes the Proceed, Advanced, or similar click-through option. MDN describes this behavior plainly: “If a TLS warning or error, such as an invalid certificate, occurs when connecting to an HSTS host, the browser does not offer the user a way to proceed or ‘click through’ the error message.”

A one-domain failure that reproduces on multiple devices and networks is normally a server-side problem. The operator should check each item below:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
- Validity: Renew the certificate before its expiration date and confirm the server presents the renewed certificate, not an old one cached in a load balancer.
- Hostnames: Ensure every production hostname, subdomain, and required wildcard is listed in the certificate’s Subject Alternative Name field. Redirect users to a name that the certificate actually covers.
- Chain delivery: Configure the server to send the leaf certificate together with the required intermediate certificates. Browsers may trust the root but still reject a chain that omits an intermediate.
- Self-signed certificates: Use a publicly trusted certificate for a public service. A private certificate authority is appropriate only when every managed client has received that authority through a controlled policy.
- TLS settings: Enable current protocol versions and ciphers and replace weak signature algorithms. Chrome’s TLS mismatch errors require a server configuration change, not a visitor-side workaround.
- All serving paths: Check every CDN, reverse proxy, load balancer, IPv4 address, IPv6 address, and regional endpoint. One misconfigured node can make the error appear intermittent.
- HSTS policy: Do not publish or extend an HSTS policy until HTTPS works correctly on every covered hostname. Once deployed, HSTS makes certificate failures non-bypassable for visitors.
After correcting the configuration, test from more than one network and browser. A site owner should provide the exact affected hostname, certificate expiration, and chain details when escalating to a certificate authority or hosting provider.
9. Common situations and the right response
“It happens on every website after I changed the battery.”
Recheck the clock and time zone. A reset system clock can invalidate every certificate simultaneously. Enable automatic synchronization and investigate hardware or firmware problems if the time will not remain correct.
“It happens only at the hotel or airport.”
Complete the captive-portal login from an HTTP page. If warnings continue after authentication on several devices, report the network to the venue rather than accepting certificates presented by the portal.
“My work laptop shows an issuer I do not recognize.”
It may be an approved enterprise inspection authority, but only your administrator can confirm that. Ask IT to verify the policy and deploy the certificate through the organization’s normal management channel. Do not copy a certificate from another computer or install one from an unsolicited download.
“The site works for friends but not for me.”
Compare networks and device clocks. Test a private window and a trusted hotspot. If only your device fails, inspect extensions, antivirus HTTPS scanning, proxy settings, and the operating system’s trust store.
“There is no button to continue.”
The host may use HSTS or the error may be classified as critical. Treat the missing bypass as a security control. Fix the underlying clock, network, or server issue and contact the responsible administrator.
10. Safety checklist before you continue
- Is the device’s date, time, and time zone correct?
- Have you completed the public Wi-Fi portal?
- Does the error remain in a private window with extensions disabled?
- Are the browser and operating system current?
- Does the page work on a trusted alternate network?
- Is HTTPS inspection enabled by antivirus or an organization proxy?
- Does the certificate cover the exact hostname and have valid dates?
- Is the warning limited to one site?
- Is the site protected by HSTS or missing a bypass option?
- Have you avoided installing an unverified certificate and avoided entering sensitive credentials?
If the warning remains after these checks, leave the page closed until the site owner or network administrator confirms a valid certificate chain. A browser warning is inconvenient, but overriding an unverified identity can expose passwords, session cookies, messages, and payment data to interception.
