Record your platform, game version, mod versions and installation route, then check for updated Creations, duplicate filenames and the required ESM–ESL–ESP order. Isolate mods by changing one variable at a time. Use the platform-specific menu recovery only for a menu problem, and reserve removing mods plus reinstalling and verifying PC files for crashes.
The sequence below separates these problems so you do not erase working Creations or rearrange a load order that is being blocked by a duplicate file name.

Identify the failure before changing anything
A warning after an update is not a diagnosis. Starfield can have a service or catalog problem while the game itself is fine, or a single incompatible Creation can make gameplay fail while the menu still opens. Use the first symptom to choose the least destructive test.

Before editing, write down the platform and store, the Starfield version shown by your launcher, every affected Creation or mod and its version, and whether it came from the in-game Creations menu or a separate manager. Note the exact first symptom and when it appears. Save screenshots or a text copy of the current load order. This record is practical protection: it lets you restore a known configuration and tells you whether a later change actually helped.

Check updates, duplicate filenames and the required load-order classes
Bring each Creation to its current version
Bethesda’s load-order support guidance says to ensure Creations are on their latest available version. A game update can leave an older plugin or its supporting files out of step with the new build. Open the Creations list, inspect the installed entries and apply any available update before experimenting with order changes. If a mod author lists a required game version, dependency or compatibility patch, treat that information as part of the update check rather than assuming the plugin is universally compatible.
Resolve duplicate filenames before trying to save an order
Two Creations with the same filename can prevent Starfield from saving the load order. Bethesda also says duplicate filenames can stop you from deleting or disabling Creations. This is different from two mods merely having similar names in their descriptions: inspect the actual file names shown by the game or manager. Record which entry you intend to keep, then update, remove or disable the duplicate according to the mod author’s instructions. Make one change, restart Starfield and test the save operation before making another.
Bethesda’s German-language support article states: “Doppelte Dateinamen können verhindern, dass Sie Ihre Load Order speichern oder Creations löschen/deaktivieren können.” In English, that means duplicate filenames can prevent saving a load order or deleting or disabling Creations.

Use Starfield’s file-class order, not a guessed universal template
Bethesda specifies this class sequence:
- ESM files at the top.
- ESL files after the ESM group.
- ESP files last.
Official Creation Club content is placed at the beginning. ESM and ESL files cannot be moved below the top group, so do not force an ESP ahead of them to solve a conflict. This is a structural rule, not a complete ordering recipe for every collection. Within the allowed groups, follow the mod’s own dependency and patch instructions. A compatibility patch may need to load after the two files it patches, but there is no single conflict-free order that Bethesda publishes for all combinations.

Fix a Creations menu that is stuck loading
Start with the non-destructive check
If the game reaches the Creations screen but it spins or fails to populate, wait a few minutes first. Bethesda’s French-language assistance article treats a short wait as appropriate when a connection issue is clearing. Do not repeatedly delete files while a temporary service or network delay may be the cause.
If the menu still does not recover, disable Creations from the list, beginning with items downloaded most recently. Recently added entries are a useful first suspect because they are the change most likely to coincide with the failure. Restart after disabling a group and check whether the menu opens normally. This test distinguishes a catalog or connection problem from one troublesome entry; it does not prove that every remaining Creation is compatible.
PC: rebuild the catalog only after preserving it
When the PC menu cannot be reached, Bethesda’s published recovery uses the local catalog file. Follow this order:
- Make a note of the installed Creations, or capture screenshots of the list and load order while you still can. The catalog can help identify the troublesome entry, so do not discard your only record.
- Exit Starfield completely.
- Open
%LocalAppData%Starfieldin File Explorer. - Locate
ContentCatalog.txtand copy it to another folder as a backup. - Remove the original
ContentCatalog.txtfrom the Starfield folder. - Launch the game and try the Creations menu again, allowing it to rebuild access to the catalog.
Removing this file is a catalog reset, not a general mod-conflict cure. If the menu returns but a particular Creation still causes trouble, use the installed-mod record and the isolation procedure below rather than deleting additional files at random.

Xbox: understand the effect of clearing reserved space
Bethesda’s Xbox remedy is to clear the game’s reserved space. That action removes downloaded Creations from the console. It can clear a damaged local catalog, but it also means you must download the desired Creations again and reconstruct the load order. Confirm that you have recorded the list before accepting the console prompts. Do not treat this step as equivalent to disabling one Creation on PC; its scope is broader.
PlayStation: use the reinstall path cautiously
Bethesda’s PlayStation instructions involve reinstalling the game. Follow the current platform prompts and allow the required downloads to finish before judging whether the menu is fixed. Because reinstalling is a substantial intervention, preserve your Creation list and save backups that the platform and game support before starting. If the menu works afterward but gameplay still fails, return to version, dependency and load-order checks instead of assuming the reinstall identified the conflicting mod.
Isolate a mod that is missing content or conflicts in gameplay
Establish a clean baseline
First test whether Starfield loads with all Creations disabled. If it does, the base installation can start without the added content, and the failure is more likely to be a Creation, its dependency chain or an interaction. If the game still fails with all Creations disabled, stop changing individual mods and use the separate PC crash or platform support path; a mod-by-mod search cannot explain a failure that persists without them.

Re-enable a small group of Creations, restart Starfield, and test the same action that previously failed. If the failure does not return, enable the next group. When it does return, divide that last group into smaller sets until the suspect item or interaction is isolated. This one-variable-at-a-time approach is deliberately slow: it prevents a second change from hiding the first cause.

Once one Creation is implicated, read its current installation notes, required dependencies and compatibility patches. A mod can appear to be the culprit when a required master file is disabled or an expected patch is missing. Check the result after every dependency change. Bethesda’s support articles recommend disabling problematic Creations and focusing on recent additions; the grouping method is a cautious diagnostic extension of that advice, not a guarantee that every conflict can be uniquely identified.
Separate a missing asset from a menu failure
If the Creations menu opens normally but a quest, item or visual change is absent, do not reset ContentCatalog.txt immediately. Verify that the Creation is enabled, current and placed in the allowed file-class group. Then test its dependencies and isolate it against other recently changed entries. A catalog reset addresses access to the menu; it does not repair an ESP that is disabled or a mod whose files no longer match the current game build.
Handle load order conservatively after an update
Use the order Starfield permits and the order the mod author documents. Keep ESM files in the top group, ESL files immediately after that group and ESP files below them. Official Creation Club content appears at the beginning. Do not move a file across a class boundary simply because a forum post suggested a different arrangement.
There is no official, universal “put this mod first” list for every Starfield collection. Dependencies and compatibility patches determine the meaningful order within the permitted groups. If two authors give conflicting instructions, identify which file is the patch and ask the authors or consult their current documentation rather than guessing. A duplicate filename must be resolved separately; changing its position will not make the duplicate legal.

After an update, make one order change, save, restart and test. If saving fails immediately, return to the duplicate-filename check. If saving succeeds but the game later crashes, revert the last change and continue with the isolation process rather than repeatedly shuffling entries.
Use a mod manager without mixing its rules with Creations
Players who install external mods through Vortex should consult the current Starfield extension documentation maintained in the Nexus Mods repository. That extension contains tool-specific behavior for Starfield mod management, and its implementation can change. Use its current instructions for deployment, profiles and load-order handling.
In-game Creations and manager-installed files are different installation routes. Record which route supplied each item, and do not apply a Vortex-specific instruction to a Creation managed inside Starfield or vice versa. If a manager reports a deployment or dependency issue, resolve that report in the manager before changing the in-game order. Keep the working profile or list you recorded at the start so you can return to it.

Bethesda’s PC crash guidance takes a broader recovery path when mods have been added: remove the mods, reinstall Starfield, and verify or repair the game files again. This is a later step, not the first response to a menu that merely hangs or to one missing asset.
- Preserve your mod names, versions, installation route and load-order screenshots.
- Disable or remove the added mods so you can test the base game.
- Reinstall Starfield using your PC store or launcher.
- Run that launcher’s file verification or repair function after the reinstall completes.
- Start the game without mods and test a repeatable action that previously crashed.
- If the unmodded game is stable, add back only a small, documented group and restart between groups.
Reinstalling and verifying can restore altered base files, but Bethesda’s article does not promise that it resolves every conflict or identifies the incompatible mod. If the crash returns only after one group is enabled, stop the broad recovery cycle and examine that group’s versions, dependencies and author notes. If the unmodded installation still crashes, the problem is no longer established as a mod conflict and needs the appropriate base-game or platform support path.
A practical decision sequence for the next update
- Record the state. Capture the platform, game version, Creation and mod versions, installation route, symptom and current order.
- Classify the symptom. Choose menu hang, order-save failure, missing content or crash; each has a different first test.
- Update and de-duplicate. Bring Creations current and resolve duplicate filenames before reordering.
- Respect file classes. Keep ESM first, ESL next and ESP last, with official Creation Club content at the beginning.
- Test the smallest change. Disable recent or suspect items, restart, and record the result.
- Use platform recovery only when indicated. PC catalog removal, Xbox reserved-space clearing and PlayStation reinstalling have different effects.
- Repair a crash only after isolation. For a PC crash after mods were added, remove mods, reinstall and verify or repair files, then test a clean game.
- Rebuild gradually. Re-enable small groups and keep the working list so a later update does not erase your diagnostic trail.
What official guidance can and cannot establish
Bethesda’s support material establishes the ESM–ESL–ESP constraints, the effect of duplicate filenames, the Creations-menu recovery paths for PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and the PC crash procedure involving mod removal and file verification. It does not identify a definitive list of third-party mods that are incompatible with the latest Starfield build, and it does not publish one conflict-free order for every combination.
Compatibility therefore has to be checked against the actual game version, platform, mod release notes and required dependencies. User reports can suggest a lead, but they are anecdotal rather than a verified fix. Treat a successful isolation test on your installation as evidence about that configuration, not as a universal rule for every Starfield player.
