How to Fix Steam Cloud’s “Unable to Sync” Error Without Losing Your Save

Steam’s “Unable to sync” warning does not mean your save is gone. Here’s how to protect local and Cloud copies, identify the cause, and restore synchronization safely.

Steam’s “Unable to sync” warning means the client could not synchronize the game’s local files with Steam Cloud. It does not prove that your save is gone, but repeatedly launching the game—or choosing a Cloud/local option without checking—can overwrite newer progress.

First, close the game on every computer, Steam Deck, or streaming device where it is open. Then back up the local save and any available remote copy before attempting destructive fixes.

What “Unable to sync” means

Steam Cloud normally synchronizes the files configured by the game developer before and after a game session. The exact files may include saves, settings, controller configuration, or other data, and the behavior differs between games. See Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation.

An Unable to sync message means synchronization failed. A Cloud conflict is different: Steam has found different local and remote versions and needs you to choose one. A game may also simply not support Steam Cloud; check the game’s Steam store page before troubleshooting.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400) | Everyday HDD storage. Plug-and-play backup. Windows & macOS. Adobe CC trial included. 1-Year Warranty
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The failure may be limited to one game, one computer, or every game. It can involve a temporary network problem, another device still syncing, a locked or unreadable file, permissions, security software, storage problems, or a game-specific Cloud configuration. Your local and remote files may still be intact.

Protect your saves first

  • Do not repeatedly launch the affected game while the warning remains.
  • Do not immediately disable Cloud and delete the Steam userdata folder.
  • Close the game and Steam on other PCs, Steam Decks, and streaming devices. Let those devices finish syncing before shutting them down.
  • If you played offline, expect a possible conflict when reconnecting; Valve says offline changes synchronize only after the device reconnects. See Valve’s player troubleshooting guide.
  • Copy the relevant local save and Cloud-related folders before changing or deleting anything.

Try these safe fixes first

  1. Exit the game normally. Wait briefly for Steam to finish background activity.
  2. Retry the sync. In the Steam Library, select the affected game and click its cloud-status warning or sync icon. Choose Retry Sync if that control appears. Labels and locations can vary by client version and platform.
  3. Restart Steam. Fully exit the client, reopen it, and retry. Restart the computer if the error persists.
  4. Check the connection. Confirm Steam is online. Temporarily disconnect from a VPN, proxy, or filtered school/work network. Trying a phone hotspot can help distinguish local network filtering from a broader problem. Ensure the system clock is correct and set automatically.
  5. Check Steam Cloud settings. Open Steam > Settings > Cloud and enable Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it. Then right-click the game, choose Properties > General, and enable its game-specific Cloud option.

Toggling Cloud off and on may refresh a stuck client state, but do it only after backing up your saves. It does not repair damaged files by itself.

Determine whether one game or every game is affected

Test another game that visibly supports Steam Cloud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • One game fails: Investigate that game’s save/configuration files, permissions, file locks, and Cloud configuration.
  • Several games fail: Investigate Steam client state, network filtering, security software, disk permissions, free space, and possible Steam-side problems.
  • Only one computer fails: The cause is more likely local to its operating system, filesystem, firewall, DNS, or Steam installation.
  • Every device fails: An account-side, cloud-side, or game-wide problem becomes more plausible.

Verify the installation—but not your saves

For the affected game, open Properties > Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files. This can repair missing or corrupted installation files. It does not necessarily repair personal saves, which may be stored in Documents, AppData, Saved Games, the game directory, or another developer-defined location.

Before verification, back up the save folder if you know where it is. Also check free disk space and whether antivirus, ransomware protection, or Windows Controlled Folder Access may be blocking Steam. Test security software only briefly if necessary, restore protection immediately, and use a narrow Steam exception rather than leaving protection disabled.

%Steam Install%logscloud_log.txt

Common locations are:

Windows: C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogscloud_log.txt
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt
Linux: ~/.local/share/Steam/logs/cloud_log.txt
  1. Close the game.
  2. Reproduce the sync error once.
  3. Close Steam if needed so the log is no longer being actively written.
  4. Open cloud_log.txt and inspect the newest entries.
  5. Search for the game’s AppID, a filename, or terms such as I/O, permission, access denied, read, write, upload, download, timeout, and quota.

A log entry may identify a file Steam cannot read, write, upload, or download. Do not delete every file mentioned: it may be a save, configuration file, screenshot, or controller file rather than disposable data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back up local and remote data

Steam’s Cloud-related local data is commonly under:

[Steam Install]userdata<SteamID><AppID>

For example:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata<SteamID><AppID>

This is not necessarily the game’s actual save location. The developer may store saves elsewhere, and Steam Cloud may include non-save files.

  1. Exit Steam completely.
  2. Copy the entire relevant <AppID> folder to a dated folder on the desktop or an external drive.
  3. Copy the game’s separate save folder too, if applicable.
  4. Keep the original backup unchanged during testing.
  5. Label backups by date and device, such as “Windows PC” or “Steam Deck.”

You can also inspect available remote files at:

https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=APP_ID

Replace APP_ID with the game’s numeric Steam AppID and sign in to the owning account. This page may show filenames and timestamps and may let you download available files. It does not guarantee that every historical save exists remotely.

Resolve a Cloud conflict safely

Compare the Cloud timestamp and local timestamp with your actual play history:

  • Choose local when this device contains the newest confirmed progress.
  • Choose Cloud when the remote copy is known to be newer or the local copy is incomplete or damaged.
  • If you are uncertain, download the remote file and preserve both versions before choosing.

The newest timestamp is useful evidence, not an automatic answer. Files can be rewritten or copied without representing newer gameplay. Valve also warns that ignoring a sync warning can create a conflict and possible data loss.

Repair a file-specific I/O error

If the log identifies one file, make a full backup first. Then:

  1. Confirm the game and Steam are closed.
  2. Check that the file is not read-only and is not locked by another process.
  3. Check drive space and filesystem health.
  4. Check whether security software is blocking Steam’s access.
  5. Rename the problematic file instead of deleting it when possible. Renaming is reversible, but a renamed save may make progress temporarily unavailable.
  6. Restart Steam and retry synchronization.
  7. If the game creates a fresh save, test whether that new file synchronizes.
  8. Restore the original only after preserving the working state.

Delete a named file only when you have confirmed what it contains and have a backup. A file described as “configuration” may be safe to recreate; a save file may permanently contain your progress.

Reset Cloud data only as a last resort

A reset can cause permanent data loss. Do not use it until you have copied both local data and any downloadable remote files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Disable Cloud for the affected game only.
  2. Close Steam.
  3. Rename, rather than immediately delete, only the affected AppID folder or identified file.
  4. Start the game and create a test save.
  5. Exit and confirm that the new local save exists.
  6. Re-enable Cloud.
  7. If Steam shows a conflict, upload the new local version only if it is definitely the correct version.

A Steam Community report describes a similar Steam Support-guided, case-specific recovery workflow, but it is not a universal recipe. Treat any deletion or overwrite as destructive: see the reported procedure.

Steam Deck, Linux, and cross-device cases

Switching between a desktop and Steam Deck can expose conflicts when one device was used offline, was suspended while the game remained open, or failed to finish syncing. Close the game and Steam on the previous device and compare both versions before selecting one.

Cross-platform compatibility is also game-specific. A game may configure different paths or files on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and some games may not make every save type portable. Steam Cloud’s configured paths and files come from the developer’s Steamworks setup.

Some persistent conflicts are not solved by the standard checklist. For example, a user-reported ValveSoftware issue opened April 14, 2026 describes a conflict loop across Windows 11 and Linux; it is evidence of an unresolved case, not proof of a universal Steam bug: view the issue report.

When to contact support

Contact Steam Support if the log points to a persistent Cloud or account problem, or contact the game developer if the save format itself appears damaged. Include:

  • Game name and numeric AppID
  • Operating system and device
  • Steam client version
  • Whether one game or all games are affected
  • Relevant recent lines from cloud_log.txt
  • Steps already attempted
  • Whether local and remote files were backed up

Do not send your entire save folder publicly if it contains personal information or account-related files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play while Steam says “Unable to sync”?

You can sometimes choose to play, but it is risky. Back up the local save first, because playing may create a local/cloud conflict or overwrite progress.

Does verifying game files fix Steam Cloud saves?

It repairs missing or corrupted installation files. It usually does not repair personal saves stored outside the game’s installation directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are Steam Cloud saves stored?

Cloud-related local files are commonly under [Steam Install]\userdata\<SteamID>\<AppID>\, but the game’s actual save location varies. Remote files may be available through Steam’s remote-storage page.

Can I recover a save that was overwritten?

Possibly, if the other version remains on another device, in a local backup, or in Steam remote storage. Download and preserve every available version before launching the game again.

Why does the error keep returning?

A recurring error usually indicates an unresolved file-access, permissions, security-software, network, storage, game-configuration, or client-side problem. Check the newest entries in cloud_log.txt instead of repeatedly toggling Cloud.
