Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Denuvo Replacement Hurt PC Performance—Then Capcom Removed It

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Denuvo replacement caused CPU performance concerns, but Capcom removed Enigma Protector in March 2026. Here is the complete DRM timeline and what it means for PC and Steam Deck players.

Capcom did remove Denuvo from the Steam version of Resident Evil 4 Remake—but the February 2026 update replaced it with The Enigma Protector, another anti-tamper system. Digital Foundry found substantial CPU-side performance regressions in some tests. Capcom removed Enigma Protector again on March 3, 2026, so the controversy describes an intermediate build rather than the current PC version.

What happened to Resident Evil 4 Remake’s DRM?

The Windows PC version launched on Steam on March 24, 2023, with Denuvo Anti-Tamper. On February 3, 2026, a Steam build change removed Denuvo from the executable. However, the same update added files associated with The Enigma Protector, meaning the game’s third-party anti-tamper system was changed rather than eliminated.

That replacement became controversial because players reported worse frame rates, stutter, and mod compatibility. Technical testing then identified CPU-side performance regressions. On March 3, Capcom removed Enigma Protector as well.

The current conclusion is therefore more nuanced than “Capcom removed Denuvo and added new DRM”: Capcom briefly replaced Denuvo with Enigma, then removed the replacement about a month later.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

The DRM timeline

Date Change
March 24, 2023 The Steam/Windows version of Resident Evil 4 Remake launched with Denuvo Anti-Tamper.
February 3, 2026 Denuvo was removed from the Windows executable, while The Enigma Protector appeared in the build.
February 2026 Players reported performance problems and disrupted mod compatibility.
February 11, 2026 Digital Foundry’s testing, reported by GameSpot, found significant CPU-side regressions in some scenarios.
March 3, 2026 Capcom removed Enigma Protector and the remaining referenced third-party protection components from the affected build.

How do we know Denuvo was removed?

SteamDB’s depot tracking recorded a modified re4.exe on February 3. Depending on the Windows depot, the executable became approximately 422.47 MiB or 435.54 MiB smaller.

That is strong repository evidence that a large protection layer was removed, but it was not a detailed Capcom announcement. SteamDB also noted that conventional official patch notes were not supplied. The safest wording is that Steam’s changed-file data confirms the build change, rather than claiming Capcom publicly explained it.

What replaced Denuvo?

The replacement was The Enigma Protector, often shortened in coverage to Enigma DRM. It is a separate anti-tamper system, not an in-house Capcom technology established by the available evidence.

Reports identified Enigma through Steam metadata, executable changes, and update analysis. Capcom did not provide a detailed public explanation for why it removed Denuvo, added Enigma, or removed Enigma again. Possible motives such as licensing, modification control, or standardizing PC protection remain unconfirmed.

How much performance did Enigma cost?

Digital Foundry compared the Enigma build with an earlier version and found meaningful CPU-side differences in some tested scenes. GameSpot’s summary reported nearly 2 ms of additional CPU processing time in certain situations.

Secondary coverage described the most severe result as roughly 40% lower CPU throughput. That figure needs careful handling: it does not mean every PC lost 40% of its frame rate. The impact depends on the scene, processor, graphics card, resolution, frame-rate target, and whether the system is CPU- or GPU-limited.

These measurements are different from average FPS. A large CPU-throughput regression may have little effect on a GPU-limited system, while a CPU-limited system can experience worse frame pacing, lower 1% lows, or more visible stutter. Lower GPU utilization alone does not prove that the graphics card is malfunctioning—the reported problem was primarily CPU-side.

What did it mean for Steam Deck users?

Steam Deck owners were among the players reporting more obvious degradation after the Enigma update. That is technically plausible because the Deck has less CPU headroom than many desktop systems, making additional code-integrity or background processing overhead more consequential.

However, the available evidence does not establish one universal Steam Deck FPS result. SteamDB lists Resident Evil 4 as Steam Deck Verified, but that rating does not prove that every historical build performed identically. Old Deck benchmarks should be treated as version-specific.

On the current build, users should test their own configuration and recheck frame-rate caps, TDP settings, Proton version, and shader-cache behavior after updates rather than relying solely on February reports.

Did the update break mods?

Executable changes can disrupt mod loaders, randomizers, upscalers, script tools, and other utilities even when the game itself still launches. Community reports indicated that some mods and loaders stopped working or required updates after the Enigma build appeared.

That does not mean every mod was universally broken. Compatibility depends on what a tool hooks, which executable version it expects, and whether its author updated it. Removing Enigma may improve the situation, but individual mods can still need current versions because the game files and executable changed.

If a mod stops working, use this order:

  1. Confirm that Steam has installed the current public build.
  2. Verify the game files in Steam.
  3. Update or reinstall the mod loader and the mod itself.
  4. Check the mod author’s compatibility notes for the post-March build.
  5. Remove obsolete DRM-specific workarounds.

Avoid unofficial cracks, “clean executables,” or downgrade tools. They can create version conflicts, save problems, malware exposure, and account risks.

Did Capcom fix the performance problem?

SteamDB recorded a March 3, 2026 build in which Enigma Protector was removed. PCGamingWiki’s current component history also lists Denuvo Anti-Tamper and VMProtect as removed on February 3, with Enigma Protector and Obsidium listed as removed on March 3.

That removes the identified source of the controversy from the current build. It does not prove, without a controlled post-March benchmark, that every lost frame or frame-time fluctuation was restored exactly. The defensible claim is that Capcom removed the replacement anti-tamper layer—not that every system necessarily returned to an identical performance profile.

Is Resident Evil 4 Remake DRM-free now?

It is safer not to describe the Steam version as absolutely DRM-free. Denuvo, Enigma Protector, and Obsidium no longer appear to be present as third-party anti-tamper systems in the current records, but Steam authentication and distribution controls still apply.

For a buyer, the practical point is simpler: the February Enigma build should not be treated as the current version of the game.

What PC players should do now

If you are buying the game

The temporary Enigma episode should not, by itself, deter a current Steam purchase. Check the official Resident Evil 4 Steam page for the current edition and DLC options. Sale prices change, so historical discounts should not be treated as guaranteed current pricing.

If you already own it

  • Use the current Steam build unless you have a specific, legitimate compatibility reason not to.
  • Verify files if the game or a mod behaves unexpectedly after an update.
  • Update mods and loaders for the current executable.
  • Ignore old advice written specifically for the February 2026 Enigma build.
  • Do not assume GPU utilization is the problem when investigating a CPU-side bottleneck.

If you use a Steam Deck

Test the current build rather than judging it solely by February reports. Recheck your Proton version, frame-rate cap, TDP settings, and shader-cache behavior after updates. There is no reliable basis here for promising a specific FPS improvement after Enigma’s removal.

The bottom line

Capcom did remove Denuvo from Resident Evil 4 Remake, but it temporarily replaced Denuvo with The Enigma Protector. Digital Foundry found substantial CPU-side regressions in some test conditions, and the change caused reported performance and mod-compatibility problems. Capcom then removed Enigma on March 3, 2026. The headline about Denuvo being replaced remains historically accurate, but it no longer describes the current Steam build.
