If a Steam Deck game freezes or loses sound after you wake the device, begin with the low-risk checks: install SteamOS updates, restart, and temporarily disable third-party Desktop Mode apps. For silent speakers, check where audio is routed before changing game settings. If the problem affects only one game, troubleshoot its compatibility separately. These steps apply to LCD and OLED models, but Valve does not identify one universal cause or guaranteed fix for resume problems.
Start with updates and a restart
- Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available updates.
- Choose Steam > Power > Restart.
- After the Deck restarts, open the affected game, put the device to sleep, then resume it to see whether the symptom returns.
Valve recommends updating and restarting when troubleshooting instability. Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide says its guidance generally applies to both LCD and OLED models.
If the game freezes after resume
Temporarily rule out third-party apps
Exit or disable apps installed through Desktop Mode, including add-ons that can affect games or SteamOS. Restart and test the same game again. If the issue stops, re-enable tools one at a time to identify whether one is involved. Valve recommends disabling third-party applications when troubleshooting application instability; this does not establish that they are the cause in every case.
Check whether the fault is limited to one game
Test another game after waking the Deck. If other games resume normally, focus on the affected title rather than changing system settings broadly. Check the game’s Deck Verified category and the requirements listed on its Steam Store page. Compatibility details can help explain whether the title has limitations on Deck, but a rating alone does not diagnose a resume failure.

Try game-level compatibility and graphics changes
For a Steam game that remains unstable, make sure it is updated. Valve suggests trying the latest Proton compatibility tool when appropriate and reducing graphics settings. Change one setting at a time and retest after sleep so you can tell whether it affects the problem. Valve’s Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide covers game compatibility, Proton selection, and graphics settings.
If audio disappears after resume
Check the selected output
If the built-in speakers are silent, first check whether sound is being sent to another device. Disconnect or disable Bluetooth audio, USB-C audio devices, and anything plugged into the 3.5 mm headset jack. A docked TV or monitor may also be the active audio destination. Choose a different output, then switch back to the default speakers and test again.

Reconnect a Bluetooth device if needed
Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and the audio device is in pairing mode. If a previously paired device will not connect, forget it on the Deck and pair it again. Valve notes that some third-party audio devices may not work properly with SteamOS, so test the built-in speakers or another available output to determine whether the fault is limited to that device.
Restart if routing checks do not restore sound
If audio is still absent after switching outputs, restart the Deck and test again. Valve’s Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide covers default speaker output, connected audio devices, and Bluetooth pairing.

When to try SteamOS Beta
If the problem persists after updating and restarting on the stable channel, Valve suggests trying Steam Deck Beta through Settings > System > Beta Participation for ongoing stability or performance problems. Beta software may include relevant changes, but its availability is not evidence that it fixes this particular resume symptom. If you switch channels, note which one you are using when you test or contact support.
Reserve recovery options for persistent or broader faults
Recovery is a later step, especially when only one game has trouble resuming. Valve distinguishes several options: rolling back the OS to a previous known-good version retains user data, while repairing SteamOS attempts to preserve games and personal content. Re-imaging or factory resetting clears local content. Before using an option that erases data, back up or otherwise account for anything stored locally.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
See Valve’s SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting guide for the available recovery choices and their consequences. Do not treat a reset or re-image as a routine first fix for one game failing after sleep.
