Then work through Steam’s general troubleshooting steps—restart, update Windows and graphics drivers, verify the game files, and temporarily close non-essential background software. These steps are diagnostic checks, not confirmed fixes for every Relic-specific problem.
1. Install the latest game update
In Steam, let any pending download for The Relic: First Guardian finish before launching it again. Then check the game’s Steam store page and official update history for newer notes. The store page showed Patch 18 live on September 18, 2026, when checked; later updates may have appeared since. An update is the best first check because Project Cloud Games says technical and performance work is ongoing, but the patch listing does not establish that a particular update fixes every crash or black screen.
The developer acknowledged launch shortcomings in a statement published by Perp Games on August 6, 2026: “The launch did not meet the standard of experience we intended to deliver.” That acknowledgement provides context, not a diagnosis for an individual PC.
2. Check whether your PC meets the current requirements
Compare your system with the live requirements on the Steam listing, since requirements can change and the listing is the authoritative place to check the current details. The requirements shown in 2026 included:

These are compatibility baselines, not a guarantee that the game will run without errors. The available listing extract does not expose every possible specification, so consult Steam directly for the full current requirements. Meeting the listed minimums does not identify or rule out a specific cause of a crash.
3. Work through Steam’s general launch checks
Steam recommends the following general steps for games that fail to launch. They are not documented as Relic-specific cures, but they can help rule out common platform or local-system problems.

- Restart the PC. Close the game and Steam, restart Windows, then open Steam and try the game again.
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. Install available updates for your Windows version and the driver for your graphics hardware, then restart if prompted.
- Verify the installed game files. In Steam, open Library, right-click The Relic: First Guardian, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Wait for Steam to complete the check, then retry the launch.
- Temporarily close non-essential background software. Close optional applications that may interfere with a launch and test again. Restore them after testing; do not leave security protection disabled.
Steam’s general guidance is available in its launch troubleshooting support. Verification and background-software checks are reversible; do not delete saves or configuration files as an initial step.
4. If Steam says the game is already running
Steam notes that an “already running” error can occur after a game closes improperly or crashes silently. Check Windows Task Manager for a stuck process for the game and close it if present; then try launching again. If the error persists, verify the game files using the Installed Files steps above. 5. If the game still crashes or shows a black screen
The official title-specific notes available here do not confirm a universal startup, crash, or black-screen fix. They do show that some different problems received patches: Patch 6, published August 5, 2026, addressed a loading interaction with spawn points and partially resolved frame drops during large-scale battles in Chapter 2; Patch 7, published August 7, 2026, fixed a loading issue that prevented entry into the Sanctum of the Stepped Aside. Those are specific in-game loading and performance changes, not evidence that startup black screens are solved.
If the general checks do not help, record the symptom precisely before contacting the developer: whether the game exits immediately, stays on a black screen, or produces a Steam error. Include your Windows version, CPU and GPU, graphics-driver versions, game version, and the exact error text. These details can help distinguish a launch failure from an in-game loading issue.

Avoid applying instructions to delete saves or configuration files unless official guidance specifically for The Relic: First Guardian supports that step and explains how to protect data. Similar-named troubleshooting for games from Relic Entertainment is not automatically applicable: The Relic: First Guardian is associated with Project Cloud Games, a different developer.
