Then restart Steam, clear the download cache for failed downloads, and test your home or a nearby download region. Repair a library folder or verify a game’s files when the error points to installation or corrupted files; investigate your network, security software, background activity, and storage only if the simpler checks do not help.
First, check whether the download is actually slow
Steam may display download rates in bytes per second, while internet plans are generally advertised in bits per second. Since one byte contains eight bits, multiply a bytes-per-second figure by eight before comparing it with a provider’s rate. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6,144 Kb/s = 6 Mbps. Check Steam’s download settings and queue
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Check whether a bandwidth limit is enabled. The units shown depend on whether Steam is set to display bytes or bits.
- Open the Download Manager and check for other queued downloads, scheduling settings, and update behavior that could be affecting the current download.

Restart before changing anything more involved
Exit and reopen Steam, then restart the computer if the problem continues. These low-risk steps can clear a temporary client issue.

Clear the download cache for failed downloads or launch problems
- Open Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Select Clear Download Cache and confirm.
- Sign in to Steam again when prompted, then retry the download or launch.
Steam says clearing the cache does not affect installed games, but it does sign you out. See Steam Support: Clear download cache.
Test your download region
Steam normally selects a content server based on your location, but a regional server can be slow, overloaded, or temporarily unavailable. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, select the region where you are located. If downloads remain slow or unavailable, test another nearby region and compare results. A distant region is not automatically faster, so treat this as a diagnostic rather than a guaranteed speed fix. Use library and file repairs for installation errors
Repair a Steam library folder
If an install or update error may be caused by library-folder permissions, open Steam > Settings > Storage, open the folder’s … menu, and select Repair Folder. Steam includes this in its guidance for update and installation problems. Steam Support: Update & Installation Issues

Verify one game’s installed files
If the issue appears limited to a particular game, open Library, right-click the game, then choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. This is the targeted option when that game’s files may be corrupted. Steam Support: Update & Installation Issues

Work out whether the bottleneck is the network, Steam, or storage
When two or more causes still seem plausible, narrow them down with a few comparisons rather than changing several things at once:
- One game or all downloads? A problem confined to one game points toward that installation or its files; if every download is affected, check Steam settings, the content-server region, and the connection.
- Is the rate only apparently low? Convert bytes per second to bits per second before comparing Steam’s display with your internet plan.
- Does another nearby region behave differently? A change can point to a regional content-server issue, though it does not prove that the original region is always at fault.
- Is Steam transferring data or installing? If the Download Manager shows a disk or installation phase rather than active network transfer, the connection may not be the bottleneck.
- Does another network or drive change the result? If available, testing one can help distinguish a connection problem from a storage or installation problem.
Check equipment, software, and storage if the problem persists
Network equipment and background activity
Restart the modem and router, and check whether other devices or applications are using the connection. Steam lists routers and modems, background programs, operating-system or driver issues, and network conditions among possible causes of download trouble. Security tools, filters, and proxies
Firewalls, antivirus software, packet filters, proxies, or other tools that monitor network or disk activity can interfere with downloads. Treat them as possible causes to investigate, not as a reason to leave protection disabled. If testing requires changing a security setting, follow the software maker’s guidance and restore normal protection afterward. Drive capacity, activity, or errors
A full, heavily loaded, or problematic drive can disrupt installation even when the network connection is working. Steam recommends considering another drive as part of installation troubleshooting. You can create another library folder and move an installed game between library folders without downloading it again; an alternate drive is useful when storage is the issue, not as a fix for a slow network or overloaded content server. When to seek more advanced help
If the checks above do not isolate the cause, Steam’s troubleshooting guidance includes testing another network and checking for drive or memory errors. Those steps can involve system-level diagnosis, so use Steam’s advanced instructions or seek qualified technical help rather than making broad security or operating-system changes.
