Start by checking Steam’s download limit and queue, then clear the download cache and test another nearby download region. If the rate still drops, compare network and disk activity: Steam may be installing files faster than your drive can handle, rather than suffering a slow internet connection.
How can I troubleshoot slow downloads or connections within Steam?
Work through the checks below in order, testing the download after each change. This starts with settings that are quick to reverse and leaves network, storage, and service checks for cases that persist.
- Check the displayed units and speed limit. Steam’s rate may be shown in bytes per second, while internet plans commonly use bits per second. Multiply a bytes-per-second figure by eight for a rough comparison, or change the rate display to bits if that option is available. Steam’s example is 768 KB/s = 6144 Kb/s, or about 6 megabits per second; the support example has no stated publication date. - Inspect the Download Manager. Check whether the game is actively downloading, waiting in the queue, or processing an update. Reorder queued items if needed, and review that game’s update preferences; Steam lets you defer some updates until launch. Pause and resume the download, then restart Steam. - Clear the download cache. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache and confirm. Menu wording can vary by client version. Steam says this can help when a game will not download or start; installed games are not affected, but you will need to sign in to Steam again. Steam’s download-cache instructions.
- Try another nearby download region. In Steam > Settings > Downloads, note the selected region, switch to a nearby alternative, and compare the result. Steam uses regional content servers, and a local server can be slow or experiencing a fault. Test one or more nearby regions rather than assuming that a more distant one will be faster; keep the setting that works best for your connection. Steam’s connection troubleshooting.
Is your download actually slow, or is Steam installing files?
A falling download-rate display does not always mean the internet connection has slowed. Installing a game can use the CPU and drive heavily, and Steam may throttle the reported download rate to match the pace of installation. Steam explains that its displayed rate is not necessarily a measure of download capacity because the download can be throttled while the client performs other installation tasks. Open your operating system’s resource monitor or task manager while the download is slow. If disk activity remains high as network activity falls, give the installation time to catch up. Check that the target drive has free space and is functioning normally. If practical, compare the same download on another Steam library drive. Steam specifically notes that an SD card’s write speed can affect total installation time.

How to tell whether Wi-Fi, the router, or the internet connection is the bottleneck
Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity, then compare the download over Wi-Fi and a direct wired connection if you can. Steam identifies wireless and powerline interference as possible problems; a less congested router channel may also help. If wired networking improves the result, investigate Wi-Fi coverage, interference, or router settings. If it does not, the cause may instead be the Steam client, storage, ISP, or Steam service. When to check security software, your ISP, or Steam’s service
If the client, region, storage, and local network checks do not resolve the problem, consider causes outside Steam’s download settings:

- Firewall, antivirus, or filtering software: Steam lists firewalls, antivirus, packet filtering, and other programs that monitor or modify network or disk activity as possible sources of trouble. If you make a temporary test change, do it cautiously and restore protection immediately afterward; do not leave security software disabled.
- ISP conditions: If downloads slow at particular busy hours, Steam says the ISP may be shaping traffic. Compare at another time or, if possible, on a different network before contacting the provider.
- Steam service conditions: During an apparent outage, check Steam service status. If the problem appears specific to your connection after the other checks, contact your ISP; if it points to Steam, contact Steam Support.
