How to Fix Steam Games With No Sound Quickly and Easily

A practical, platform-by-platform guide to restoring sound in Steam games, from Windows Volume Mixer and game settings to Steam Link, Steam Deck, Linux/Proton and Source surround fixes.

If a Steam game is silent, first check the output device and the game’s entry in the Windows Volume Mixer, then inspect the title’s own Audio settings. Those two controls can mute one game while Windows and every other application continue to play normally. If all applications are silent, fix Windows audio routing, mute state, enhancements, or drivers before troubleshooting Steam.

The correct fix depends on whether the silence affects one game or the whole system, which Steam platform you use, and whether audio is routed through speakers, a 3.5 mm headset, USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, Steam Link, or Steam Deck speakers.

Start with the fastest Windows checks

  1. Launch the affected game. Leave it running at a menu or another screen where it should produce sound.
  2. Open the Windows Volume Mixer. Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and open the mixer. Confirm that the game has its own volume slider, is not muted, and is assigned to the intended output. A normal master-volume level does not prove that the individual game is unmuted.
  3. Check the selected output device. In the taskbar sound control, choose the speakers or headphones you actually want to use. Disconnecting unused Bluetooth, USB-C, HDMI, USB, or 3.5 mm devices temporarily can reveal whether another device captured the game’s output.
  4. Check the game’s Audio menu. Open Options, Settings, or Audio and raise master, music, effects, and dialogue levels. Confirm that the output mode matches your equipment; a surround mode can be silent or incomplete on a stereo device.
  5. Restart the game after changing its output. Some titles select their playback device only when they start, so close and relaunch the game after switching speakers or headsets.

These checks solve the most common one-game failures without changing drivers or reinstalling anything.

Determine whether Windows or one game is at fault

Browsers, music, and other games also have no sound Windows output, mute, enhancements, or driver Follow the system-level checks in the next section.
Only one Steam game is silent That game’s mixer entry, output assignment, or Audio settings Keep the game open and inspect Volume Mixer and the in-game menu.
Sound works locally but not through Steam Link or Remote Play Streaming speaker configuration or channel handling Use the Steam Link and Remote Play steps below.
Only Steam Deck’s built-in speakers are silent Another output selected, or SteamOS audio state Switch outputs, return to default speakers, then restart SteamOS if necessary.
Only Source games have surround trouble Channel mode or competing audio-control software Test Stereo and the documented Source launch options.

When every Windows application is silent

Use Windows’ system controls before changing Steam. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound, select the intended output under the output-device section, and make sure the mute control is off. Play a Windows test sound or another application while you make the change. If several outputs are listed, select the one physically connected to your speakers or headset rather than leaving an unused HDMI or Bluetooth device active.

Turn off audio enhancements for a test

Windows audio enhancements can interfere with a device or a particular game. In the selected output’s properties, disable enhancements temporarily and test again. If sound returns, leave enhancements off or re-enable them one at a time to identify the setting that conflicts with playback.

Check the audio driver

A failed, outdated, or corrupted audio driver can silence every application. In Windows’ sound-device properties, check for driver updates and restart Windows after an update. The built-in sound card, an add-in sound card, and a USB audio device can each expose a different playback path, so make sure the driver you update belongs to the output you are using.

Use another output as a diagnostic

Connect a USB headset or another known-working output and select it in Start > Settings > System > Sound. This does not repair a muted mixer or an in-game software fault, but it can distinguish a faulty speaker, analog jack, or selected output from a Windows-wide problem. Return to your normal device after the test and select it explicitly.

When only one Steam game has no sound

Inspect the game’s Volume Mixer entry

Keep the game running while opening Volume Mixer. Windows gives each active application a separate volume and, on supported versions, an output assignment. Raise the game’s slider, clear mute, and choose the same speakers or headphones selected as the system output. If the game does not appear, close it, relaunch it, and open the mixer while it is producing or attempting to produce audio.

Reset the title’s own audio choices

Open the game’s Options, Settings, or Audio screen. Set master volume above zero, then check music, effects, and dialogue separately. Select the output mode that matches the hardware: Stereo for ordinary two-channel speakers or headphones, and surround only when the connected device and Windows configuration support it. Apply the changes, exit the menu, and restart the game if it remains silent.

Remove competing devices

Bluetooth earbuds, USB headsets, USB-C docks, HDMI monitors, and a connected 3.5 mm plug can all become the active route. Disconnect or disable the alternatives temporarily, select the desired device in Windows, and relaunch the game. Reconnect devices one at a time afterward so you can identify which connection causes the route to change.

Steam Link and Remote Play

For Steam Link, update the operating system and audio drivers on the relevant device, check its playback-device preference, and launch the game to test the title’s own sound settings. In Steam Link’s speaker configuration, choose Stereo when a game is silent or behaves incorrectly with another speaker layout. Some games have problems streaming audio with particular speaker configurations, so Stereo is a useful baseline even when your local equipment can handle surround.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand Remote Play channel behavior

Steam documents different channel handling for streaming clients. Windows clients can stream quadraphonic and 5.1 audio. Audio sent to other host clients is mixed to stereo for streaming. If a game is configured for a channel layout your client cannot receive, switch the game and Steam Link speaker configuration to Stereo and test again.

Separate local and streamed failures

First play the game directly on the host computer. If local audio is already missing, fix Windows or the game’s settings before investigating streaming. If local audio works but the streamed session is silent, concentrate on Steam Link’s speaker mode, the client’s playback device, and the game’s channel setting.

Steam Deck: restore the built-in speakers

  1. Disconnect or temporarily disable Bluetooth headphones, USB-C audio devices, docks, and any 3.5 mm headset. One of them may be receiving the game’s audio.
  2. Open the Steam Deck audio controls and switch to another available output.
  3. Switch back to Default Speakers and test the game.
  4. Open Steam > Settings > Audio and verify the selected output and UI-sound controls. If UI sounds are also absent, the problem is broader than one game’s mixer.
  5. If the speakers remain silent, use Steam > Power > Restart to restart SteamOS, then test before reconnecting other audio devices.

Reconnect Bluetooth, USB-C, and analog devices individually after the speakers work. This identifies whether a particular device is taking priority rather than proving that the Deck speakers themselves have failed.

Linux and Proton: establish the audio route first

There is no single universal Proton no-sound fix. Treat the first diagnosis as an output-routing problem: confirm the desktop’s default audio sink before launching the game, check the game’s own mixer and output mode, and test another output device. If the desktop cannot play a test sound, fix the Linux audio stack before changing Proton settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A title-specific workaround depends on the exact game, Linux distribution, and audio stack, such as the PipeWire or another desktop audio configuration in use. Record which sink is selected and whether another application can play sound; those details determine whether the fault is in the desktop route, the game’s settings, or Proton’s handling of that title.

Source games and surround-sound failures

If a Source game is silent or missing channels while ordinary stereo applications work, configure the playback device in Windows first. In the game, open Options > Audio and test Stereo before returning to surround. Close proprietary audio-control software supplied with a sound card, headset, or motherboard while testing, because it can compete with the game’s channel configuration.

Source games provide two documented launch-option tests. Add one option at a time to the game’s Steam launch options, start the game, and test:

  • +snd_legacy_surround 1
  • +snd_digital_surround 1

Keep the option that matches your working device and remove it if it makes playback worse. Do not test both simultaneously; changing one variable makes the result easier to interpret.

A practical decision path

  1. All audio is missing: choose the correct device in Start > Settings > System > Sound, clear mute, disable enhancements for a test, and check the relevant audio driver.
  2. Only one game is missing audio: with the game open, unmute its Volume Mixer entry, assign the intended output, and raise every relevant control in the game’s Audio menu.
  3. Audio disappears after connecting a device: disconnect Bluetooth, USB-C, USB, HDMI, or 3.5 mm alternatives, select the desired output again, and relaunch the game.
  4. Steam Link is silent: verify host playback first, then set Steam Link’s speaker configuration to Stereo and retest the game.
  5. Steam Deck speakers are silent: switch away from another output and back to Default Speakers, verify Steam > Settings > Audio, and restart through Steam > Power > Restart.
  6. Source surround fails: use Stereo, close audio-control utilities, and test the two Source launch options separately.

As an optional shortcut after these manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can look for common Windows issues, adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, and provide an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every crash.
