Start by checking the network path, not by replacing hardware: connect the PC running Steam to the router with Ethernet if possible, put the Android device on a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal, and use Steam Link’s performance overlay to see whether network timing is spiking. Then test lower streaming quality or bandwidth. If Steam Link cannot find or connect to the PC, check that both devices are on the same home network and look for firewall or router isolation settings.

Why is Steam Link lagging or stuttering on Android?

Steam Link streams a game from a computer running Steam to an Android device. That means the game can be running smoothly on the PC while the stream still stutters: video and input have to travel across the local network, and inconsistent delivery can disrupt what appears on the phone, tablet, or TV.

Network conditions are the first thing to investigate, but they are not the only possible cause. Use Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay to check whether network timing varies during the problem. If it does, improve the connection or lower the stream’s demand before considering new equipment. If the network-time graph does not show the same pattern, changing Wi-Fi settings may not address the cause.

Steam’s Android setup guidance lists Android 5.0 or newer, a computer running Steam, and a wireless router among the requirements or recommended equipment. For setup, the Android device and host computer should be on the same network. These prerequisites do not guarantee that every Android device, router, and network arrangement will work equally well. Confirm the basic setup before adjusting advanced options: the PC must be powered on, Steam must be running and signed in, and the client must be connected to the intended network. An app that cannot discover a sleeping or disconnected host is a different problem from a stream that connects and then stutters.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

How do I check whether the network is causing the problem?

  1. Open Steam Link’s streaming settings. Find the advanced streaming settings and enable the Remote Play performance overlay. The exact menu labels can vary by app version, so look for the streaming or advanced streaming section.
  2. Start a stream and reproduce the issue. Watch the graph while the stutter, freeze, or delay occurs rather than judging it only from a moment when the stream is smooth.
  3. Look at the cyan network-time line. Steam’s guidance identifies large spikes in this line as a sign of highly variable network time. Such spikes commonly coincide with video stuttering or freezes.
  4. Change one thing at a time. Repeat the same activity after each adjustment and compare the graph and the stream. If the spikes become smaller or less frequent and the picture improves, the change likely helped. If not, restore the setting or move to a different check.

The overlay is a diagnostic aid, not a guarantee that every problem will appear as a network spike. It is most useful for testing whether a network change or lower stream demand improves the same recurring issue.

For a useful comparison, keep the test as consistent as you can: use the same room, client device, and game activity before and after a change. If you pause a large download and move closer to the router at the same time, an improvement will not tell you which adjustment mattered. Make one change, test during the kind of play that usually triggers the issue, and note whether the cyan line and visible stutter both change. If the picture remains poor but the network-time pattern does not improve or correlate with the issue, avoid repeatedly changing Wi-Fi settings without evidence that they are relevant.

How can I improve the Wi-Fi connection without buying anything?

Wire the host PC to the router

If practical, connect the computer running Steam directly to the router with an Ethernet cable, while leaving the Android device on Wi-Fi. Steam recommends wiring the host where possible: when both legs of the route—from PC to router and router to client—use wireless, transmissions can interfere with one another. A wired host is also a useful diagnostic test because it removes one wireless leg without requiring the Android client to be wired.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam Support’s “Steam Link – Suggested Network Settings” says: “A wired network will provide the best result, and we highly recommend using an Ethernet connection if your Remote Play streaming client supports it.” For an Android client that remains wireless, the practical implication is to wire the host computer when you can.

You do not need to wire every device to try this. The host’s Ethernet connection changes the first part of the route, while the Android device can continue using Wi-Fi. If running a cable is inconvenient, treat it as a test rather than a mandatory purchase: the troubleshooting sequence still offers other reversible checks, including signal placement, competing network activity, and stream quality.

Use 5 GHz when its signal is strong

Connect the Android device to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band if it has a good signal there. Steam recommends 5 GHz for the client side because it is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz. The trade-off is range: 5 GHz has shorter reach, so a weak signal at a distance can be worse than a stronger 2.4 GHz connection. Move closer to the router or reposition the router if that improves signal quality; do not choose 5 GHz solely because the label sounds faster.

TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6)
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Check the signal where you actually play, not only beside the router. A band that works well in the same room may perform differently through walls or farther away. The practical decision is whether the Android client has a reliable connection in its usual location. If switching to 5 GHz makes the stream less stable, return to the stronger band or improve the signal before trying again.

Reduce contention and improve placement

  • Pause large downloads and other heavy network use while testing, including video streams on other devices.
  • Move the Android device nearer the router if its Wi-Fi signal is weak where you play.
  • Place the router where the signal can reach the play area more reliably instead of leaving it obstructed or far away.
  • Check the router maker’s current instructions for firmware updates if connection quality or reliability remains poor.

Make changes separately and retest with the overlay. That helps distinguish a useful improvement from a change that merely coincides with a temporarily quieter network. If other people or devices are actively using the connection, pause that activity only for a short comparison test; this can show whether competing use is contributing without requiring a permanent change to the household network.

Does Steam Link need 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. Steam recommends 5 GHz on the client side, but the important condition is a stable connection where the Android device is being used. Steam’s guidance notes that 5 GHz is less congested than 2.4 GHz but has shorter range. If 5 GHz is weak in the room, improve the placement or distance first, or test the band that gives the device a more reliable signal.

Steam also recommends an 802.11ac router as a good performance choice among the options in its guidance, with 802.11n over 5 GHz as the next-best option there. These are recommendations, not proof that a particular router is the cause of a problem. Consider a router change only after checking the existing network and establishing that its band, coverage, or performance under load is limiting the stream.

In other words, a 5 GHz network is a useful option, not a strict Steam Link requirement. Test it against the available 2.4 GHz connection in the play area. A nearby Android device with a good 5 GHz signal may benefit from the less congested band; a device at the edge of its range may be better served by a stronger connection. Keep the setting that gives you a more consistent stream rather than choosing a band based on a speed label alone.

How do I reduce Steam Link bandwidth and stop stuttering?

  1. Open Steam Link’s streaming or advanced streaming settings. Menu names and locations can differ by app version.
  2. Try “Balanced” or “Fast” quality. These options reduce bandwidth use, with lower visual quality as the trade-off. Test one option at a time while watching the stream and the performance overlay.
  3. Set a bandwidth limit if needed. Steam’s guidance suggests starting low and increasing gradually until hitches appear, then backing down to a setting that remains smooth. The aim is not to select the highest possible limit but to find a level the network can sustain.
  4. Retest under the same conditions. If lower demand reduces network-time spikes or stuttering, keep the setting that gives you an acceptable balance of image quality and stability. If it does not, restore the earlier setting and investigate the network path or connection setup.

Lowering quality is a reversible test, not a universal fix. It can make the image less detailed, and it will not correct a discovery failure caused by a firewall, isolated network, or devices being on different networks.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

When adjusting a bandwidth limit, avoid jumping straight to a high value. Begin conservatively and raise it in small steps while testing. Once hitches return, lower the limit again rather than accepting an unstable setting for a nominally higher number. If “Balanced” or “Fast” makes the stream smooth but the image trade-off is too noticeable, you can try a different combination of quality and bandwidth and compare them. The right setting is the one that remains stable on your network while delivering image quality you find acceptable.

Why can’t Steam Link find or connect to my PC?

  1. Check the host computer. Make sure it is on, Steam is running, and the account is signed in.
  2. Check both network connections. The Android device and PC should be connected to the same home network for setup. If one has joined a guest network or a different network, switch it to the intended home network.
  3. Check firewall access on the host. Security software may block Steam Remote Play. Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, and TCP ports 27036 and 27037, for Remote Play. Use these as host-firewall troubleshooting details; they are not a reason to expose ports broadly to the public internet.
  4. Check for router client isolation. A setting called access point isolation, AP isolation, or client isolation can prevent devices on Wi-Fi from communicating with one another. If it is enabled on the home network, disable it and test again. Router labels and controls vary by manufacturer.
  5. Test without WPS if connection trouble persists. Steam advises disabling WPS and trying another connection method when WPS is associated with connection issues.

Steam says Remote Play is generally unsupported on many public, workplace, school or university, guest, portal-login, and isolated networks. A sign-in page, network policy, or device-isolation rule can prevent the local communication Remote Play needs. Use a suitable private home network rather than trying to work around restrictions on a managed or public network.

The port numbers are useful when checking whether the host firewall is blocking Remote Play, but they are not a general instruction to change router security or open access from the internet. If you do not know how your firewall rule is configured, use its current help instructions and limit any change to the host’s Remote Play access. Router firewall and port-forwarding controls are not interchangeable with a local host-firewall permission, so do not make broad network changes just because a connection fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are on a guest Wi-Fi network at home, the devices may be connected to the same router but still prevented from communicating with one another. Check the router’s isolation setting or use the main private home network for the test. Similarly, a school or workplace network can impose restrictions you cannot change; Steam’s guidance does not support assuming that Remote Play will work on those networks.

Should I change my router or buy an Ethernet cable?

Try the lower-cost, reversible network changes first. A cable can let you wire the host PC to the router while the Android device stays wireless; a router upgrade is worth considering only if the current setup has a specific limitation. Use this comparison to decide what, if anything, needs changing:

Option When it makes sense Trade-off or check
Ethernet cable for the host PC The PC is currently using Wi-Fi, and the router can be connected to it by cable. Requires a cable run to the router, but tests the host’s wireless leg without requiring a wired Android client.
Keep the current router and adjust placement or band The router offers usable 5 GHz Wi-Fi, but the Android device is far away or has a weak signal. Improving proximity or placement may help; 5 GHz’s shorter range means it is not automatically the better choice at every distance.
Replace or improve the router The current router lacks a usable 5 GHz band, has inadequate coverage where you play, or performs poorly under load. Compare 5 GHz support, 802.11ac or newer capability, coverage in the play area, and the ability to choose a less congested channel. A purchase is not a first troubleshooting step.

Steam notes that wider channel widths can be faster but more sensitive to distance and radio interference. A router feature that improves peak speed may therefore be a poor fit in a location with weak signal or interference. If you are comparing routers, assess coverage where the Android device is used rather than relying on a model’s headline capability alone.

Think of wiring the host as the simpler first hardware option: it addresses a specific wireless leg and can be tested without replacing the rest of the network. Router shopping is more conditional. Look for a usable 5 GHz band and coverage at the client’s location, plus 802.11ac or newer capability as Steam’s guidance recommends. The ability to choose a less congested channel may also be relevant, but channel width has a trade-off: wider settings can be faster while being more vulnerable to distance and radio interference. Do not infer that a new router is necessary merely because Steam Link stutters; first confirm that your current coverage or performance is the limiting factor.

No particular price or model is required to follow these steps. If you already have a suitable cable or router, try it before buying anything. If you later shop for a router, compare the conditions in the room where you play rather than paying for features that do not address your actual limitation.

What should I do if it still freezes or disconnects?

After testing the stream settings and the local network, restart the equipment in a controlled way. Steam recommends power-cycling the router and modem, then the PC and client, allowing each device to restart fully before trying again.

  1. Power-cycle the router and modem, then wait for them to finish restarting.
  2. Restart the PC running Steam and allow Steam to start and sign in.
  3. Restart the Android phone, tablet, or TV running Steam Link.
  4. Reconnect and repeat the same streaming test with the performance overlay enabled.
  5. If the issue remains, check the router maker’s current firmware-update instructions and test again after any update.

Router firmware steps differ by manufacturer, so use the instructions for your specific router rather than guessing at a menu path. If connection discovery still fails, revisit the same-network, host-firewall, and isolation checks; if the PC connects but the picture stutters, use the overlay and stream-demand tests to focus on the streaming path.

Allow the modem and router to finish starting before testing; restarting all devices at once can make it harder to identify what changed. After the network is back, bring up Steam on the PC, confirm the Android client is on the home network, and reproduce the same symptom. If a firmware update is available, follow the manufacturer’s procedure and retest afterward. Firmware controls vary, so do not assume instructions for one router apply to another.

Which fix should I try first?

  • Stutter or freezes while connected: enable the overlay, check the cyan network-time line, wire the host PC if possible, improve the Android device’s Wi-Fi signal, and test Balanced or Fast quality.
  • PC does not appear or connection fails: confirm Steam is running on the PC and both devices are on the same home network; then check firewall access and client isolation.
  • Problem occurs only away from the router: compare the strength of 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz where you play, and improve router or device placement before replacing hardware.
  • Problem continues after settings changes: restart the network equipment and devices, check router firmware, and repeat the test under the same conditions.

Steam’s guidance is general Remote Play advice; router controls and app menu labels can vary. The most useful result is a repeatable change: an adjustment that improves the overlay or stream when the same problem is tested again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Steam Link require 5 GHz Wi-Fi on Android?

No. Steam recommends 5 GHz for the client when its signal is strong, since it is generally less congested than 2.4 GHz. It has shorter range, so test the band that is more reliable where you play.

What Android version does Steam Link support?

Steam’s Android setup guidance lists Android 5.0 or newer. It also calls for a computer running Steam and a wireless router; the Android device and host should be on the same network for setup.

Which ports does Steam Remote Play use?

Steam lists UDP ports 27031 and 27036, plus TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Check whether host firewall software is blocking Remote Play; do not treat these numbers as a reason to expose ports broadly to the public internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a new router to fix Steam Link stuttering?

Not as a first step. Try wiring the host PC, improving the client’s Wi-Fi signal, reducing competing network use, and lowering stream quality or bandwidth. Consider a router only if the current one lacks usable 5 GHz, has poor coverage where you play, or performs badly under load.

Why can’t Steam Link find my PC?

Check that the PC is on and Steam is running and signed in, then confirm the Android device and PC are on the same home network. A host firewall or router client-isolation setting can also prevent discovery. Public, guest, workplace, school, portal-login, and isolated networks may not support Remote Play.

The Bottom Line

For Steam Link lag on Android, first determine whether the stream is connected but unstable or whether the PC cannot be discovered. Use the performance overlay for stuttering, then test a wired host, strong client Wi-Fi, and lower stream demand one change at a time. For connection failures, verify the same home network and check host firewall and router isolation settings before considering new hardware.
