SteamCMD result code 3 usually means the client could not establish or keep a connection to Steam. When it appears with Login Failure: No Connection, check the server’s DNS, outbound routing, firewall, security software, proxy, and hosting-provider region before reinstalling SteamCMD. Then verify that the chosen login method is authorized, complete Steam Guard if prompted, and run the commands in the correct order. If the same command works from another host or data center, the evidence points to a provider routing or IP-reputation problem rather than a broken game-server install.
What SteamCMD error code 3 means
The most useful diagnosis is the complete SteamCMD transcript, not the final number. A common sequence is:

Login Failure: No Connection
FAILED with result code 3That pattern identifies a connection failure during login. It does not prove that every result-code-3 event has the same cause. Steam Support groups this class of failure with connection problems involving firewalls, routers, security software, and background applications. A temporary Steam service interruption, an overloaded or misrouted provider network, blocked egress, DNS failure, or a proxy that rejects Steam traffic can all produce a similar symptom.
Other messages require a different branch of troubleshooting. Steam Guard denial is an authentication challenge, No subscription means the account is not entitled to the app, and an error that appears only during app_update points to permissions, storage, content-server access, or an invalid app/branch request rather than the initial login path.

Capture the complete output before changing anything
Run SteamCMD manually once, or redirect an automated run to a timestamped log. Save every line from startup through the failure, including the command that was entered. Record:
- Whether the message says
No Connection, a Steam Guard denial,No subscription, or anapp_updatefailure. - The server’s UTC timestamp, public IP address, hosting provider, data-center region, and operating system.
- Whether anonymous login or an entitled account was used.
- Whether the failure occurs consistently, only at certain times, or after a network change.
- Whether another SteamCMD operation, host, or region succeeds with the same app and credentials.
Do not diagnose from “result code 3” alone. A later update error can be mistaken for a login failure if a script hides the preceding lines.

Step 1: Test DNS and the server’s outbound path
Perform these checks on the machine that runs SteamCMD, not on your desktop. A successful browser test elsewhere does not establish that the server can reach Steam.
Check name resolution
On Linux, use the resolver tools available on the image:

nslookup steamcommunity.comA timeout, “server failed,” or an address that changes between working and failing attempts indicates a resolver or upstream network problem. Check the host’s configured DNS servers, cloud network settings, and any internal DNS policy. If other names resolve but Steam-related names do not, investigate filtering rather than reinstalling SteamCMD.
Check outbound HTTPS and proxy behavior
Use a simple HTTPS request to establish whether the host can leave the network:

curl -I https://steamcommunity.comThe exact HTTP status is less important than receiving a response without a DNS, timeout, TLS, or proxy error. If your environment requires a proxy, verify its address, credentials, certificate inspection policy, and allow-list. If it does not use a proxy, remove stale proxy variables and service-level proxy settings. A proxy that allows ordinary web traffic can still block Steam authentication or long-lived connections.
Inspect egress controls
- Review the operating-system firewall and any endpoint security product for blocked SteamCMD processes or outbound sessions.
- Review cloud security groups, network ACLs, NAT gateways, and provider-level egress filtering.
- Confirm that the host has a valid default route and that its clock is accurate enough for TLS and authentication.
- Check whether a VPN, tunnel, traffic shaper, or corporate filter is intercepting the connection.
Steam Support states: “If you can specify ports to open, please use the ports specified in the following article: Required Ports for Steam.” Use that official port list for your Steam client and server scenario instead of copying an arbitrary list from a forum. Game-server listening ports are separate from the outbound ports SteamCMD needs to log in and download files.
Step 2: Restart the network path and retry
Once you have captured the output, restart the affected network component in a controlled maintenance window. Depending on the platform, that may mean restarting the host’s network service, renewing its DHCP lease, restarting a NAT gateway, or rebooting the server. Do not repeatedly reinstall SteamCMD while the route is down; a transient connection failure does not indicate damaged binaries.
Retry after checking for a Steam maintenance event or provider incident. Compare two attempts several minutes apart and record their timestamps. If one succeeds without any file or command change, treat the original event as transient and continue monitoring rather than making invasive configuration changes.
Step 3: Use the login method the app actually permits
Anonymous login
Many dedicated-server applications allow:
login anonymousAnonymous access is an app-by-app permission, not a universal SteamCMD capability. It may work for a public dedicated-server package while failing for a private branch, restricted tool, or workshop item.
Entitled account login
When anonymous access is not permitted, sign in with an account that owns or is otherwise entitled to the requested app:

login <account-name> <password>Treat credentials as secrets. Avoid placing a real password in a shared script, process list, shell history, CI log, or container image. Use the host’s secret-management facility or an interactive login where practical. If the server reports No subscription, changing firewalls will not grant access; the account must have the required entitlement, or the app must be installed through a method that the publisher permits.
Step 4: Complete Steam Guard and retain its state
Valve’s Steamworks documentation identifies the cause plainly: “Probably SteamGuard is preventing login.” If an account login requests a code, retrieve the current code from the account’s email and enter it in the same SteamCMD session:
set_steam_guard_code <CODE>
login <account-name> <password>Use the command order shown by the prompt and retry the login if the first attempt was rejected. A code is time-sensitive; do not reuse an expired value.
SteamCMD stores authentication and download state in its Steam data directory. The directory must be writable by the account running SteamCMD and must survive a restart. In a container, mount that directory as persistent storage and ensure its ownership matches the runtime UID and GID. If the directory is read-only or recreated on every deployment, SteamCMD may ask for Steam Guard repeatedly, lose cached credentials, or appear to fail before an update begins.
Step 5: Run commands in a reliable order
Set the destination before updating the app. A safe interactive sequence is:
force_install_dir <INSTALL-PATH>
login anonymous
app_update <APPID> validate
quitReplace anonymous with an entitled account when the app requires it. The validate option checks for missing or corrupt server files and repairs them; it does not fix a blocked login or grant an entitlement.

For automation, stop immediately when a command fails so a script cannot report a successful deployment after a rejected login:
steamcmd +@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1 +force_install_dir <INSTALL-PATH> +login anonymous +app_update <APPID> validate +quitKeep the SteamCMD log as an artifact of the run. If the process exits early, the log should show whether the stop occurred during login, entitlement checking, or file update. Put force_install_dir before app_update; otherwise files can be written to an unintended default location and create a second, confusing problem.
Step 6: Verify permissions, disk space, and cache locations
SteamCMD needs write access to both the game install directory and its Steam data/cache directory. Check the effective user, not only the owner shown for a parent folder.
- Confirm the service account can create, modify, and delete a test file in the install path.
- Confirm the same account can write Steam configuration, login cache, and download metadata.
- Check free space and inode availability; validation and patching can require temporary room in addition to the final game size.
- Ensure a read-only mount, restrictive umask, or security policy is not denying writes.
- In containers, match volume ownership to the UID/GID used by the entrypoint, and persist the Steam data directory separately from ephemeral layers.
A permission failure commonly appears after a successful login, but an unwritable cache can also cause repeated authentication prompts that look like a login outage. Correct ownership first, then retry with the same command and credentials.

If DNS, local firewall rules, credentials, and permissions check out, run the identical SteamCMD command from a second host or region. Use the same app, login method, and command order so the comparison changes only the network path.
A documented incident recorded Login Failure: No Connection and result code 3 on a server in a New York data center; recreating the server in London eventually succeeded. That case is evidence that a provider route, egress policy, or IP reputation issue can be region-specific. It is not proof that moving regions is the universal fix.

Interpret the comparison this way:
- Both hosts fail: investigate credentials, entitlement, Steam Guard, app availability, or a wider Steam service event.
- Only the original host fails: supply the provider with timestamps, public IP, region, complete SteamCMD output, DNS results, and the successful comparison. Ask it to check routing, egress filtering, NAT, and any reputation block.
- Only one command fails: compare the app ID, branch flags, install path, and account rather than blaming the host network.
- Failures occur only during scheduled jobs: check rate limits, concurrent jobs, rotating egress IPs, and whether the job starts before the network is ready.
Do not repeatedly destroy and recreate servers without preserving logs. A region change is useful as an isolation test; it becomes an operational decision only after you have weighed latency, bandwidth, backup placement, and the provider’s response.

Container and automated-server checklist
Containerized game servers add failure modes that do not exist on a manually managed machine. Before opening a support ticket, verify:
- The container has DNS configured and can reach the public network through its bridge, NAT, or host network.
- Cloud security groups and host firewalls allow the container’s outbound sessions.
- The Steam data directory is a persistent volume, not a disposable layer.
- The volume is writable by the runtime UID/GID, and permissions remain correct after redeployment.
- Secrets are injected securely and are not printed by the entrypoint or CI system.
- The update job uses
@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1and returns a nonzero status when login fails. - Logs include UTC timestamps, the selected region, app ID, branch, and the complete SteamCMD output, with passwords and guard codes removed.
Run a one-off diagnostic container with the same image, user, mounts, and network policy as production. Testing from a privileged shell or a different image can hide the actual restriction.
When reinstalling SteamCMD helps—and when it does not
Reinstallation is reasonable only after the connection and authorization paths work and the client files themselves are damaged or incomplete. Result code 3 paired with No Connection is not, by itself, evidence of a corrupt installation. Reinstalling cannot repair a blocked route, a closed firewall rule, an invalid proxy, a missing entitlement, or an unwritable volume.
If you do replace the client, preserve the game files and Steam data directory when appropriate, verify ownership afterward, and rerun the known-good command sequence. Compare the new transcript with the original rather than assuming the reinstall solved the underlying cause.

What to send a hosting provider or administrator
A precise escalation shortens the investigation. Include:
- UTC timestamps for failed and successful attempts.
- Provider name, data-center region, public IP, operating system, and whether the server is virtualized or containerized.
- The complete SteamCMD output with account passwords and Steam Guard codes redacted.
- DNS lookup results and the outcome of an outbound HTTPS test.
- Firewall, security-group, proxy, and egress-policy details.
- The exact login mode, app ID, branch or validation options, install path, and runtime user.
- A comparison from another host or region, if available.
Ask specifically whether the provider sees failed connections, filtered egress, NAT exhaustion, routing problems, or an IP reputation block. A provider can act on that evidence; “SteamCMD code 3” alone is too broad.
Fast decision path
- Find the exact line before result code 3.
- If it says
No Connection, test DNS, HTTPS, firewall, proxy, security software, and cloud egress from the server. - Restart the network path and retry after checking for service maintenance.
- If login is challenged, complete Steam Guard and persist a writable Steam data directory.
- If the message is
No subscription, switch to an account with the required entitlement or confirm that anonymous access is supported. - Run
force_install_dirbeforeapp_update, addvalidatewhen repairing files, and enable@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1in automation. - Check permissions and storage for both install and cache directories.
- Test another host or data-center region; escalate with logs when only one provider path fails.
The practical verdict is simple: code 3 with Login Failure: No Connection is primarily a network-path diagnosis. Authentication, entitlement, command order, and filesystem checks then separate the cases that look similar in a short SteamCMD log.
