Start with Sony’s low-risk reset, then install any available controller software update. If the movement remains in more than one game, the usual hardware remedy is replacing the worn joystick module. That repair requires opening the controller and desoldering and soldering components; it is not a plug-in fix. Use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified technician if you do not already have electronics-repair experience.
Confirm that the problem is controller drift
Stick drift means an analog stick is reporting movement at rest. In a game, that can look like a character creeping forward, a camera panning, a menu cursor moving, or a vehicle steering without input. Search terms such as “PS5 controller stick drift,” “DualSense analog stick moving by itself,” and “how do I stop my PS5 controller from drifting?” all describe this same symptom.

Before opening the controller, find out whether the behavior is global or limited to one game.

- Quit the affected game and try another title that uses the same stick.
- Move through the PS5 home screen and settings menus. If the cursor moves without touch there as well, the controller is reporting input outside that game.
- Reconnect the controller and test again. A single game can apply its own dead-zone or stick-sensitivity settings, which may change how noticeable a marginal signal is.
Dead-zone controls can alter the symptom in an individual game, but no universal settings fix for standard DualSense drift has been established. Treat a game-specific adjustment as a diagnostic or gameplay workaround, not proof that a worn module has been repaired.

1. Reset the DualSense controller
Sony’s first troubleshooting step is a physical reset. It does not reconfigure the controller or erase its pairing settings.
- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Locate the small reset button on the back of the DualSense.
- Press the button with a pin or another similar narrow tool and hold it briefly.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the controller to reconnect it.
Test the stick again in the game and on the PS5 home screen. If the unwanted movement has stopped, you can continue using the controller. If it returns immediately or never changes, continue with the software check rather than repeatedly pressing the reset button.
2. Install the latest DualSense device software
DualSense controller software updates are delivered when the PS5 system software is updated. You can also check the controller entry manually:

- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the on-screen instruction if an update is offered.
After updating, restart the console and repeat the cross-game test. An update can correct software behavior, but it cannot restore a physically worn joystick module. Do not treat a current software version as evidence that the mechanical part is healthy.

3. Decide whether the fault is probably hardware
If drift is present in several games and in the PS5 interface after a reset and software check, a worn joystick module becomes the leading explanation. The module contains the stick’s sensing components; wear can make it report movement when the stick is centered. The symptom alone cannot prove exactly which internal component has failed, so describe it as a likely cause rather than a guaranteed diagnosis.
At this point, choose between professional service and an advanced repair. Do not confuse the repair instructions for different DualSense models.

4. If you repair a standard DualSense yourself
iFixit’s “DualSense Joystick Replacement” guide classifies the job as difficult and calls for intermediate soldering skills. The old module must be desoldered from the controller board before the replacement is soldered in. That is fundamentally different from swapping a cable or clicking in a spare part.
Identify the controller revision first
DualSense internals and repair procedures vary between revisions. iFixit’s version-identification guidance uses the second digit of the controller’s serial number as the version indicator. Read the serial marking on your controller, note that digit, and use it to select the matching repair instructions and part. Do not buy a module solely because it is advertised as a “PS5 joystick.”

Before ordering, confirm all of the following:
- The replacement is specified for a standard DualSense, not a DualSense Edge.
- The seller or repair guide identifies compatibility with your controller revision.
- The module’s physical layout and mounting points match the original part.
- You have the equipment required for safe removal and installation, including suitable soldering and desoldering tools.
iFixit lists a standard replacement joystick and a Gulikit TMR alternative, along with soldering and desoldering tools. Those are options for the advanced-repair route only; most people troubleshooting drift do not need to purchase them.
What the repair involves
- Disconnect the controller and remove the external screws and covers according to the guide for your exact revision.
- Separate the housing carefully so you can reach the main board without pulling attached cables.
- Document connector locations and the original module orientation before removing anything.
- Use the desoldering equipment specified by the repair guide to free the module’s soldered connections.
- Remove the worn module, clean and inspect the connection points, and position the compatible replacement in the same orientation.
- Solder every required connection, inspect the joints for bridges or incomplete connections, and reassemble the controller in the reverse order.
- Reconnect by USB, then test both sticks and the controller buttons in the PS5 interface and in more than one game.
The exact disassembly order, solder points, and component layout depend on the revision, so follow the matching guide rather than improvising from photographs of another DualSense. If you cannot confidently perform the desoldering and soldering steps, stop before opening the shell and use a repair service.
Risks that make this an advanced repair
- Opening the shell can damage clips, cables, or the housing if excessive force is used.
- Too much heat or poorly controlled soldering can damage the circuit board or nearby components.
- A replacement with the wrong footprint or revision can fail to fit or report correctly.
- A controller can appear to work while one button, trigger, or vibration connection has been left disconnected.
These risks are why the documented standard-DualSense procedure is not equivalent to the removable stick-module process used by the DualSense Edge.

Sony provides removable stick-module instructions for the DualSense Edge. Those instructions are for the Edge’s replaceable modules and should not be presented as a standard DualSense solution. The regular DualSense uses a soldered joystick module in the documented repair procedure.

Check the model printed on the controller before following any guide or buying a part. If it is a standard DualSense, expect board access and soldering. If it is a DualSense Edge, look for the Edge-specific removable-module procedure and an Edge-compatible replacement. Mixing the two approaches can lead to an incompatible part or unnecessary disassembly.
6. When professional repair is the better choice
Use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repair service when the reset and update do not help and you lack intermediate soldering experience. This is especially sensible when the controller is still covered by a retailer or manufacturer service policy, when you cannot identify the revision, or when the controller contains other intermittent faults.
Tell the technician exactly what you observed: which stick drifts, whether it happens in the PS5 menus, which games reproduce it, and whether resetting and updating changed anything. Ask the service to verify part compatibility with the controller’s revision rather than assuming every standard DualSense takes the same module.
7. Troubleshooting branches
The drift appears in only one game
Check that game’s dead-zone, sensitivity, and controller settings, then restore its defaults and test again. Because game settings differ, a setting can make a borderline stick look better or worse. If the stick also moves in the PS5 interface or another game, return to the controller reset and software-update steps.

The controller will not reconnect after the reset
Repeat the reset with the PS5 turned off, connect by USB, and press the PS button. The reset itself does not reconfigure pairing settings. If the controller still will not connect, resolve the connection problem before diagnosing drift; an unpaired controller cannot provide a meaningful in-game test.
The update option is unavailable
Make sure the PS5 system software is current, then revisit Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software. If no controller update is offered, continue testing after the reset. An unavailable update does not establish that the joystick is mechanically sound.
Drift returns after a temporary improvement
Repeat the cross-game and home-screen test. If the symptom returns consistently, treat it as unresolved rather than assuming the reset permanently fixed it. Persistent behavior after the official software steps points back to a likely module-wear repair or service assessment.
You are considering cleaning or calibration
No official evidence covered here establishes that external cleaning or calibration reliably fixes drift on a standard DualSense, and those actions should not be described as Sony’s recommended remedy. Do not spray fluid into the controller or alter the electronics as a first response. Use the reset, update, and repair decision path instead.
8. A practical decision checklist
- Different games and the PS5 menu are unaffected: inspect the affected game’s dead-zone and sensitivity settings.
- Drift occurs broadly: perform Sony’s reset, reconnect by USB, and check the controller software path.
- Drift remains after both steps: plan for a likely joystick-module repair or professional assessment.
- You own a standard DualSense: expect an advanced soldering job; verify the revision and replacement part first.
- You own a DualSense Edge: use the Edge removable-module instructions, not the standard DualSense desoldering procedure.
- You lack soldering experience or tools: choose PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repairer.
What actually fixes PS5 DualSense drift?
The safest sequence is reset, update, and test across games. Those steps address connection and software possibilities without opening the controller. When unwanted movement persists everywhere, replacing the worn joystick module is the documented hardware route for a standard DualSense, but it requires opening the controller and desoldering and soldering the module. Matching the part and guide to the controller revision is essential. For anyone without the required electronics skills, professional PlayStation repair is the lower-risk option.
