How to Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online Membership Card

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online membership card by entering its 16-digit membership download code in Nintendo eShop, using the Nintendo Account that should own the membership. You can also redeem the code in a browser at ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ if that account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

Check the code’s country, membership tier, and individual-or-family plan before submitting it. Nintendo membership codes are region-specific, and an existing membership may continue separately rather than combine with the new one.

Before you redeem the card

A membership card normally contains a Nintendo Switch Online membership download code. Use that code—not a retailer transaction number, barcode number, or another reference printed on the card or receipt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the Nintendo Account

Membership access is granted to the Nintendo Account selected during redemption. If several people use the console, check the account name before entering the code. A successful redemption cannot simply be moved to another account because the wrong profile was selected.

Nintendo Switch Online 12-Month Individual Membership [Digital Code]
  • Enjoy a curated library of 70+ classic Super NES and NES games. You can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or virtually pass the controller, depending on the game.
  • Access a collection of Game Boy games to play anytime, anywhere!
  • In addition to the game data regularly saved to your system, you’ll have online backup. This makes it easy to retrieve your game data if you lose your system or start using a new one.
  • Enhance your online experience with the Nintendo Switch Online app. For example, you can use voice chat with players in compatible games.

Check the country or region

Nintendo says membership codes are region-specific. A code intended for the Americas works with Nintendo Accounts set to countries in that region where Nintendo eShop is available. Codes for other regions require an account set to the corresponding region. On a physical card, look at the back for the intended country before scratching off or entering the code.

Nintendo does not exchange a code intended for one country for a code for another country. A card bought while traveling or from an overseas seller may therefore be unusable on your account, even if the console itself is the same model.

Identify the membership product

Check whether the card is for a standard Nintendo Switch Online membership or a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Also verify whether it is an individual or family plan and what term the card represents. Nintendo documents multiple plan types, and a code for a different plan does not always convert an existing membership into the plan printed on the card.

Redeem the card on a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2

The console route is the most direct option when the account that will receive the membership is already on your Switch-family system.

  1. From the HOME Menu, select Nintendo eShop.

  2. When eShop asks who is using it, select the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership. Pause here and verify the account name; do not continue on a different family member’s profile.

  3. Inside eShop, open Nintendo Switch Online. Select the option that lets you view or change the membership. This screen shows the membership choices available for the selected account.

  4. Choose the option to redeem a download code. The exact wording can vary with country and software version, but it is part of the membership view or change flow rather than the ordinary game-download screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. Enter the card’s 16-digit Nintendo Switch Online membership download code. Nintendo’s on-screen keyboard disables characters that are not used in prepaid codes, including O, I, and Z, which helps prevent common typing mistakes.

  6. Read any terms shown on screen. Select the acceptance option only after checking that the account, region, plan, and term are correct, then confirm the redemption.

  7. Review the auto-renewal choices and any request to select a payment method. Nintendo’s Americas instructions state that choosing a renewal method does not charge you at the moment of redemption; it applies to renewal when the membership period ends. Payment methods and available settings differ by country.

After confirmation, the membership information for that Nintendo Account should reflect the redeemed term. If you want to verify the result immediately, open the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information in eShop and check the plan and expiration date.

Redeem a Nintendo Switch Online code online

Nintendo also provides a browser redemption route at ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/. This is useful when the console is unavailable, but it has an important prerequisite: the Nintendo Account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

  1. Open ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ in a browser.

  2. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership.

  3. Check the account name displayed after sign-in. If it is not the intended account, sign out and use the correct one before entering the code.

  4. Enter the 16-digit Nintendo Switch Online membership code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  5. When Nintendo asks, enter the account password again. This additional check protects the account before a code is applied.

  6. Select Redeem and read the confirmation details, including any renewal information, before accepting.

If the account has never opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console, online redemption may not be available. Use eShop on the console first, then try the browser process again.

What happens with an existing membership?

Do not assume that every code extends the current membership or replaces its plan. Nintendo says different memberships may run concurrently. Its example is an individual membership that remains active when a family membership code is redeemed; the two memberships do not automatically become one subscription.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Individual and family plans

Before redemption, compare the plan printed on the card with the plan already active on the selected account. A family code can create a separate family membership while an individual membership is still active. The account and household arrangement that can use each plan depend on Nintendo’s current terms for your country.

Expansion Pack restrictions

Nintendo says an existing family membership cannot redeem a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack individual membership code. This is a plan mismatch, not a typing error. If the screen rejects the code, confirm both the active plan and the plan encoded on the card instead of repeatedly entering the same number.

Choose the account before trying to solve a mismatch

If the code is valid but does not fit the membership on one account, stop before confirming redemption. Check whether another Nintendo Account in the household is the intended recipient and whether that account has a compatible plan. Nintendo’s system applies the code to the account currently signed in; it does not ask you to choose a different owner after redemption.

Auto-renewal and payment prompts

Code redemption can include a prompt about automatic renewal. In the Americas instructions, Nintendo lists a credit card, PayPal, or available eShop funds as possible renewal methods. Selecting a method at redemption does not create an immediate charge according to those instructions; the method is used if the membership renews at the end of its term.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nintendo’s US gift-card information says memberships automatically renew after the initial term at the then-current price unless canceled. The exact renewal behavior, payment choices, cancellation controls, and displayed terms can vary by country, so read the screen for the account’s region rather than relying on a menu description from another country.

What to check before accepting

  • The account name shown on the confirmation screen.

  • The membership tier and whether it is individual or family.

  • The term being added or started.

  • Whether auto-renewal is enabled.

  • The payment method selected for a future renewal.

If you do not want a future renewal, use the account’s current renewal settings to turn it off according to the instructions shown for your region. Do not confuse disabling auto-renewal with canceling the redeemed term immediately; the membership period may continue until its stated expiration date.

How to check the membership and expiration date

Nintendo’s membership FAQ says the plan and expiration date can be viewed in Nintendo eShop under the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Nintendo eShop from the HOME Menu.

  2. Select the Nintendo Account whose membership you want to inspect.

  3. Open the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information.

  4. Read the displayed membership plan and expiration date.

Check this page after redemption if the confirmation was unclear, if another membership was already active, or if you want to verify whether the code produced a concurrent plan rather than extending the previous one.

Understanding the code and the receipt

Retail cards and receipts can show several strings of numbers. The number needed for this process is specifically labeled as the Nintendo Switch Online membership download code and contains 16 characters. A store transaction ID, activation reference, barcode number, or order number is not a substitute. If a retailer provides the code only on a receipt, keep the entire receipt until the membership appears in eShop.

Enter the characters exactly as printed. The console keyboard omits O, I, and Z because those letters are not used in Nintendo prepaid codes. If a printed character appears ambiguous, compare it with the remaining characters and the keyboard rather than substituting a retailer reference. On the web page, check that no extra spaces or characters were added when copying the code.

What to do immediately after redemption

Save the card and proof of purchase even after a successful confirmation. The account’s Nintendo Switch Online information is the authoritative place to check the plan and expiration date. Confirm that the displayed tier, individual-or-family type, and term match what you bought. This is particularly important when the account already had a membership, because Nintendo may show separate memberships rather than one combined period.

If the displayed result is not what you expected, do not purchase or redeem another code immediately. Note the account used, the exact plan shown, the expiration date, and any message on screen. Those details help distinguish a concurrent membership from a failed or restricted redemption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting a rejected or unusable code

The code says it is invalid

Compare every character with the card or receipt and make sure you entered the 16-digit membership download code, not another retailer number. Nintendo’s prepaid-code keyboard omits O, I, and Z because those characters are not used in these codes, so a character that looks similar may be a zero, one, or another permitted symbol.

Record the exact error message or error code before trying again. Nintendo’s membership purchase and extension support recommends searching for the specific error or contacting Nintendo Support if the problem continues. The exact code matters because an invalid format, a region conflict, an already-used code, and an account-plan restriction can produce different remedies.

The card is for another country

Recheck the country printed on the physical card and compare it with the country set for the Nintendo Account. Nintendo says it cannot exchange a code intended for one country for another. Contact the seller promptly about its return or exchange policy; Nintendo cannot change the region encoded for you.

The code appears to be used

Stop entering it repeatedly and preserve the card, receipt, and purchase confirmation. Verify that the code was entered on the intended Nintendo Account and inspect that account’s Nintendo Switch Online information. If the membership is not present and Nintendo reports that the code has already been redeemed, use the exact message when contacting Nintendo Support or the retailer.

The code does not fit the current plan

Check the active membership and the code’s printed tier. A different plan may run concurrently, and Nintendo specifically states that an existing family membership cannot redeem an individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack code. A plan mismatch requires choosing a compatible account or code; repeatedly retyping the same code will not change the plan encoded in it.

Browser redemption is unavailable

Confirm that you signed in with the same account that should receive the membership and that this account has opened Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once. If that prerequisite has not been met, perform the first eShop sign-in on the console and return to the browser page.

The renewal screen is confusing

Read the displayed renewal term, price language, and payment method before confirming. In Nintendo’s Americas instructions, selecting a method does not charge the account immediately, but the membership can renew at the then-current price when the initial term ends unless auto-renewal is canceled. Regional screens may offer different payment methods or wording.

Buying or comparing a card before redemption

Nintendo says membership download codes are sold through select retailers. Availability, prices, and stock change, so verify the seller’s current listing and the card’s region before paying.

Use this checklist when comparing two cards or digital code products:

A low price does not compensate for a region mismatch or a plan that the selected account cannot redeem. Keep the receipt until the membership and expiration date appear in eShop.

Fast pre-redemption checklist

Once those checks are complete, enter the code through Nintendo eShop or the official browser redemption page, confirm the terms, and verify the resulting plan and expiration date in the account’s Nintendo Switch Online information.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I redeem a Nintendo Switch Online code?

Open Nintendo eShop, select the Nintendo Account that should receive the membership, open Nintendo Switch Online, choose the membership view or change option, select redeem a download code, and enter the 16-digit membership code. Accept the displayed terms and review renewal settings before confirming.

Where do I enter my Nintendo Switch Online membership code?

On a Switch or Switch 2, enter it in Nintendo eShop’s Nintendo Switch Online membership view or change flow. You can also use ec.nintendo.com/redeem/#/ after the account has opened eShop on a Switch-family console at least once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I redeem the code online without my console?

Yes, if the Nintendo Account has accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch-family console at least once. Sign in at Nintendo’s redemption page, verify the account name, enter the 16-digit code, re-enter the password if requested, and select Redeem.

Will redeeming the card charge me immediately?

Nintendo’s Americas instructions say selecting a renewal payment method does not charge you at redemption. It applies if the membership renews when the term ends. Auto-renewal behavior, payment methods, and wording vary by country.

Can I use a card bought in another country?

Usually not. Nintendo membership codes are region-specific. The country printed on the card must correspond to a country supported by the Nintendo Account’s eShop region, and Nintendo does not exchange a code from one country for another.

What if I already have a Nintendo Switch Online membership?

Check the plan before redeeming. Nintendo says different memberships can run concurrently, such as an individual membership and a redeemed family membership, rather than automatically merging into one subscription.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Expansion Pack code rejected?

Confirm the active plan and the code’s plan. Nintendo specifically says an existing family membership cannot redeem an individual Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack code. This is a plan restriction, not necessarily a mistyped code.

How can I check whether the code worked?

Open Nintendo eShop with the receiving account, open its Nintendo Switch Online information, and check the displayed membership plan and expiration date. Keep the card and receipt until those details are correct.

What should I do if Nintendo says the code is invalid or already used?

Record the exact error message or code, verify that you used the 16-digit membership download code and the intended account, and check the account’s membership information. Then search Nintendo’s error-specific support guidance or contact Nintendo Support and the retailer with the receipt.

The Bottom Line

Use the 16-digit Nintendo Switch Online membership download code in eShop or Nintendo’s browser redemption page. Confirm the account, country, plan, and term first, then review auto-renewal and verify the resulting expiration date.
