Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking what is happening when the game slows down, then change one setting at a time. CPU, memory or disk pressure, the wrong graphics processor, shader compilation, and a game’s rendering mode can all contribute; no single Windows setting fixes every game. The steps below use Windows and NVIDIA guidance, not game-specific performance tests, so compare results in the same game conditions rather than expecting a particular FPS gain.
1. Check whether the slowdown began after an update
Check Windows Update and available optional driver updates using Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance. Before changing drivers, note when the problem began and whether a Windows or graphics-driver update preceded it.

NVIDIA says a graphics-driver installation deletes its shader cache. The first game run afterward may stutter while shaders are compiled again, so a brief hitch on that run does not by itself show that the update damaged hardware or that you need to reinstall the driver. Avoid cycling through driver versions as a default fix; first check whether the behavior changes on later runs.
2. Watch system activity while the game stutters
Open Task Manager while the slowdown is happening and check CPU, memory, and disk use, along with processes competing for those resources. Microsoft recommends this as a way to identify heavy processes and help narrow the cause. If an application you do not need is consuming resources, close it and see whether the same section of the game behaves differently.

A busy resource is a clue, not proof that a component needs replacing. Record what was active and compare under similar in-game conditions before drawing a conclusion.
3. Reduce background work and check free storage
Close unused apps, disable unnecessary startup apps, and limit background activity you do not need. If the Windows drive is low on free space, use Storage Sense or Disk Cleanup to remove files you no longer need. Microsoft notes that low disk space can reduce overall Windows performance; that advice supports freeing space, not automatically buying a new drive.

4. Make sure the game is using the intended GPU
This step is relevant if your PC has more than one GPU, such as integrated graphics alongside a discrete graphics card. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select or add the game, choose Options, then select High performance if that is the GPU you intend to use. Windows’ windowed-games guidance describes the per-app Graphics preference; NVIDIA also documents per-program graphics settings in its Manage 3D Settings reference.

Restart the game after changing the selection so it can take effect. If your system has only one suitable GPU, this setting is unlikely to address the cause.

The mature AM4 platform with DDR4 memory offers excellent value and proven stability.
5. Check whether shader compilation explains the hitching
Shader compilation can cause stuttering as a game prepares visual effects for rendering. NVIDIA’s Control Panel reference says: “Shader compiles are normally performed each time a game runs and are a common cause of game-play stuttering.” A cache lets later runs reuse compiled shaders; NVIDIA also notes that a cache that is too small can evict shaders that are still in use.
This makes the timing useful: stutters concentrated on an initial run after a driver update may fit a cache rebuild, while repeated hitches can have other causes too. The cited guidance does not establish a universal cache size or prove shader compilation is responsible for every open-world hitch.

6. Try Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization only when it applies
Windows 11 has an optimization for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-windowed mode. Microsoft says it transitions those games to the flip presentation model to reduce frame latency and can enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. It is not a general fix for exclusive-fullscreen games or all forms of stutter.

To check it, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings and look for Optimizations for windowed games. Availability and benefit depend on the game, its presentation mode, and display support. Change the option and compare the same scene; revert it if performance or behavior worsens.

7. Test Best performance mode with its trade-offs in mind
On Windows, open Settings > System > Power & battery (or Power on some devices) and set Power mode to Best performance, if available. Microsoft says this can help the CPU run at higher performance when needed. Treat it as a reversible test, particularly when the PC is plugged in: it uses more power and, on laptops, can drain the battery faster and make the device warmer.
8. Decide whether the evidence points to a hardware limit
Compare your PC’s specifications with the game’s stated requirements and consider the resource measurements from the scene that slows down. Microsoft notes that software changes may not significantly improve an older PC with outdated hardware, for which an upgrade may be a long-term solution. The guidance does not identify a specific graphics card, memory capacity, SSD, or cooling part to buy; the right component depends on what is actually limiting your system.
These steps are diagnostic guidance, not measured FPS promises for a particular game or configuration. Change one variable at a time and compare the same area, settings, and approximate conditions so you can tell whether a change helped.
