What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Fix shooter performance problems by diagnosing the symptom first, then changing one reversible setting at a time. Persistent low FPS usually means the game is rendering slowly; stutter is uneven frame delivery that can occur even when the average FPS looks high. Check Windows updates, background resource use, display and GPU assignment, refresh-rate settings, and shader compilation before buying hardware or installing optimization software.
Stutter and low FPS are different problems
A frame-rate counter reports how many frames the game renders over time. It does not show whether those frames arrive evenly. A game producing 120 FPS can still feel jerky if one frame takes much longer than the others. Conversely, a game locked near 45 FPS may feel consistently slow but not exhibit sharp pauses.

| Symptom | What you may notice | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Persistently low FPS | The image is slow or sluggish throughout a match, including in otherwise ordinary scenes. | The game may be limited by rendering capacity, system resource pressure, settings, or a game-specific problem. The available evidence does not identify a universal CPU or GPU threshold. |
| Intermittent stutter | Brief hitches, pauses, or uneven camera movement while the average FPS appears acceptable. | Frame-time spikes, shader compilation, background activity, display-mode behavior, or an engine-specific issue are possible causes. |
| Network or server lag | Players teleport, shots register late, or movement feels delayed while local animation remains smooth. | The symptom may be connection or server related rather than a rendering problem. A higher local FPS will not correct network delay. |
These categories can overlap. A single hitch does not prove that the CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, or network is at fault. Use the sequence below to narrow the possibilities without changing many variables at once.
Record what changed before changing settings
Start by writing down the game, Windows edition and version, graphics card and driver version, monitor resolution, selected refresh rate, and whether the problem is constant or limited to particular maps, effects, or moments. Note when the issue began and what happened immediately beforehand.

Check Windows health and background resource use
Install relevant updates
Open Windows Update and install available updates. Also review optional driver updates, while remembering that an optional update is not automatically the right answer for every game. Restart Windows after updates that request it, then launch the shooter again.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If the PC still runs Windows 10, treat it as a legacy environment: do not assume it receives ongoing free feature or security updates, and check Microsoft’s current support information before relying on an old troubleshooting step. The performance guidance cited here applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the support status is different.
Find competing processes in Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - On Processes, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk, and GPU in turn.
- Close applications you do not need for the session, especially browsers with many tabs, launchers performing downloads, video encoders, and other workloads that are visibly consuming resources.
- Open Performance and watch CPU, memory, disk, and GPU activity while the problem occurs.
Microsoft’s performance guidance notes that several factors can make a PC feel slow and recommends checking resource use. Task Manager does not by itself identify the exact game bottleneck, but it can reveal a separate process competing with the game at the moment a hitch occurs. Do not end a process you cannot identify; close ordinary applications first and restart if Windows becomes unstable.
Check free disk space
Low available disk space can reduce overall PC performance. Use Settings > System > Storage to review space and remove temporary files or other data you no longer need. This is a capacity and Windows-health check, not proof that replacing a hard drive with an SSD will cure shooter stutter or increase FPS.

Consider an internal NVMe SSD only after you have confirmed that storage capacity or an existing storage constraint is part of the problem. Verify the motherboard’s supported form factor and interface, the drive’s capacity, and a safe backup plan before purchasing or installing anything. The available evidence supports freeing space when storage is low; it does not establish a universal performance gain from an SSD upgrade.
Test the power mode carefully
On a laptop or a desktop where power consumption matters, note the current Windows power mode before testing. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery and select Best performance when available. Run the same game scene and compare it with the previous mode.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Microsoft warns that Best performance uses more power. A laptop may run warmer and drain its battery faster, so use this as a reversible test, preferably while connected to AC power. If it changes nothing, return to the mode that fits your noise, temperature, and battery priorities.
Verify the monitor refresh rate and VRR
Refresh rate and game FPS measure different things. Refresh rate is how many times the display can update per second; FPS is how many frames the game renders. Raising the monitor’s refresh rate can improve motion clarity when the game supplies enough frames, but it cannot by itself make the game render more frames.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the intended monitor if more than one is connected.
- Check the listed refresh rate and choose the rate your display and connection support.
- Return to the game and confirm its resolution, refresh-rate, and display-mode choices have not changed.
Windows may show variable refresh rate (VRR) options when the display and game support them. Microsoft notes that VRR can make a manual refresh-rate change unnecessary for supported combinations. VRR smooths the relationship between display updates and changing frame delivery; it does not remove a CPU limit, shader compilation, or a background process that causes a frame-time spike.

If a game feels smooth in one display mode but hitches in another, record the exact mode and test only that variable. Avoid changing resolution, quality presets, refresh rate, and synchronization options simultaneously, because you will not know which change mattered.
Check Windows 11 graphics options and GPU assignment
Optimizations for windowed games
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles running windowed or borderless. It is not a universal setting for every rendering API or every game.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game’s entry under the app list, or add its executable if it is not listed.
- Open the game’s options and test Optimizations for windowed games when the title and mode are compatible.
- Restart the game after changing the feature.
Use a consistent scene for the comparison. If the game runs in exclusive fullscreen, this particular windowed-game feature may not apply; switch modes only when you are intentionally testing the mode itself.
Select the high-performance GPU when necessary
A PC with integrated and discrete graphics can sometimes launch a game on the power-saving GPU. In Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game’s executable, open its options, and choose High performance when that option is available. Restart the game and verify that the intended graphics processor is active in Task Manager’s Performance view.
This setting matters only when Windows has more than one GPU and has selected the wrong one or an unsuitable preference. It does not create additional rendering capacity on a single-GPU system.

Account for shader compilation after a driver update
Stutter that begins immediately after a graphics-driver installation has a plausible explanation: NVIDIA’s Manage 3D Settings reference says that shader compilation is normally performed when a game runs and is a common cause of gameplay stuttering. The same documentation explains that installing a driver clears the shader cache, so the first run after the update may hitch while the game rebuilds it.
This does not prove that every post-update hitch is shader compilation. A driver can also change compatibility or interact differently with a particular game. Let the game complete its normal first-run work, then revisit the same scene. Avoid repeatedly clearing the shader cache as a generic fix; clearing it removes compiled data and can make the rebuilding phase happen again.
If the issue persists across later launches, compare another map or session, check whether the game has a documented shader-preparation step, and use the game’s support channel. The available technical guidance does not provide a universal waiting time, FPS improvement, or cache setting that applies to all shooters.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Choose one repeatable scene: the same map area, training range, replay, or sequence where the problem is easy to reproduce.
- Write down the current resolution, display mode, refresh rate, graphics preset, Windows power mode, and GPU preference.
- Change one setting only, such as the windowed-game optimization, GPU preference, power mode, or a display mode.
- Restart the game when Windows or the setting requires it.
- Repeat the same scene and record whether the symptom is persistent low FPS, an isolated hitch, or no change.
- Keep a change only if it improves the specific symptom without creating an unacceptable trade-off in heat, battery use, image quality, or input behavior.
Do not describe a setting as a guaranteed fix because one scene feels better. A change that helps a borderless DirectX 11 title may not affect an exclusive-fullscreen game using another API, and a scene that avoids shader compilation may not represent the rest of a match.

Match symptoms to the next diagnostic branch
The game is always slow
- Confirm Windows is using the intended GPU and that the monitor is running at the desired refresh rate.
- Check Task Manager for another process consuming CPU, memory, disk, or GPU resources.
- Confirm the game did not switch to a higher resolution or a different display mode after an update.
- Check free disk space and Windows updates.
- If the problem remains, use the game’s support documentation and gather the system details you recorded rather than immediately replacing a component.
The cited guidance does not establish whether your CPU, GPU, memory, cooling, or game engine is the limiting factor. A hardware purchase should follow measurements or qualified diagnosis, not the FPS symptom alone.
The game hitches for a few seconds or in new areas
- Consider shader compilation when the issue follows a driver installation or a first run.
- Look for a background process that spikes at the same moment in Task Manager.
- Compare windowed, borderless, and fullscreen behavior, recording the exact mode.
- Check whether the hitch is tied to a specific map, effect, or patch and consult the game’s support channel.
The image is smooth but actions arrive late
Separate rendering from connectivity. Teleporting players, delayed hit registration, and movement that snaps back can indicate network or server conditions even when local animation is fluid. The Windows and shader steps above address frame delivery, not internet routing, server load, or matchmaking conditions.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Confusing refresh rate with FPS: selecting a faster monitor mode cannot force a game to render at that rate.
- Changing many settings at once: this destroys your comparison point and makes rollback difficult.
- Clearing shader caches repeatedly: a driver update already clears the cache; repeated clearing can recreate the compilation workload.
- Assuming an SSD is a universal cure: low disk space can hurt Windows performance, but the evidence does not show that an SSD upgrade fixes all shooter stutter or raises average FPS.
- Using Best performance on battery without checking the trade-off: higher power use, heat, and battery drain can outweigh a small or nonexistent change.
- Diagnosing from one symptom: a hitch, low average FPS, and network delay require different investigations.
- Treating Windows 10 as fully supported indefinitely: support ended October 14, 2025, so verify the current support status before relying on ongoing updates.
When basic checks are not enough
Stop making random changes when the sequence produces no clear result. The available official guidance does not provide a universal method for separating CPU limits, GPU limits, thermal throttling, memory pressure, network lag, and game-engine defects. Those causes can look alike during play.

At that point, collect the notes from your controlled retests, the game’s version, Windows version, GPU and driver version, display settings, and the location or event that triggers the symptom. Check the game’s own support pages for known issues and patch-specific workarounds. If the PC shows broader instability, crashes, overheating, storage errors, or performance problems outside the game, seek qualified hardware service rather than installing a paid “optimizer” or replacing parts without evidence.
Quick Recap
A practical order of operations
- Record what changed and the exact symptom.
- Install relevant Windows updates and review optional driver updates.
- Close unnecessary applications and inspect Task Manager’s resource views.
- Check free disk space and remove safe-to-delete temporary data.
- Test Windows Best performance as a reversible, power-hungry setting.
- Confirm monitor refresh rate, VRR availability, resolution, and display mode.
- On Windows 11, test Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10/11 windowed or borderless titles.
- On multi-GPU systems, set the game’s Windows Graphics preference to High performance when appropriate.
- If the issue follows a driver update, allow for shader-cache rebuilding before judging the first run.
- Retest one variable at a time and escalate to game-specific support or qualified service when the evidence remains inconclusive.
