Sports games can remain commercial leaders during a weak period because spending is concentrated in a few established franchises, annual releases inherit recognizable brands and audiences, and live services keep generating revenue after launch. That does not mean every sports game grows, or that the entire video-game market is shrinking at the same time.
First, separate the three different claims
“Sports games sell well” can describe a genre, a franchise, or one unusually successful release. “People are spending less on games” can describe the total market, a particular platform, or a category. Those are different measurements, so they can move in opposite directions.

- Total market: spending on games across genres and platforms in a defined territory and period.
- Sports genre: the combined performance of games classified as sports titles.
- Individual title: one release, such as NBA 2K26, whose result can differ sharply from its genre.
- Full-game sales: purchases of the main game. These should not be treated as interchangeable with add-on content, subscriptions, licensing or advertising.
- Live-service revenue: money earned after launch from ongoing content and related services. A publisher can report strong live-service revenue even when full-game sales are flat, and the reverse can also happen.
A meaningful comparison therefore needs a geography, a calendar or fiscal year, a market definition and a clear statement about whether it is measuring copies, dollar sales or broader franchise revenue.

What the latest U.S. example actually shows
The most useful recent example is the U.S. full-year 2025 market. Circana data reported by Sports Business Journal in January 2026 found that sports-game sales were down 8% from the genre’s record 2024 result. Yet total U.S. video-game sales increased 1% to $60.7 billion. The market did not fall overall; one genre declined from an unusually high comparison point.

| Measure | U.S. 2025 result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Total video-game sales | $60.7 billion, up 1% from 2024 | The overall market grew slightly. |
| Sports-game sales | Down 8% from 2024 | The genre declined from its 2024 record. |
| NBA 2K26 | No. 2 among all games; No. 1 sports game | A leading title remained exceptionally strong while its genre contracted. |
| 2024 comparison | Boosted by the return of EA Sports College Football | An exceptional launch made the following year’s percentage comparison harder. |
This is the central answer to the apparent contradiction: a genre can lose sales year over year while a major franchise still ranks near the top of the entire market. The comparison is also affected by bundles and by how individual editions are reported. Circana executive director Mat Piscatella told Sports Business Journal that, when bundles are listed separately, it is “exceptionally difficult to really take away anything of note from the ranked placements of the individual games.”
Why established franchises are unusually resilient
A small group captures a large share of demand
Sports publishing is concentrated around a limited number of recognizable series. In its annual reporting, Electronic Arts identifies EA SPORTS FC, College Football and Madden NFL among its significant franchises and says its annualized global football game is consistently one of the market’s best sellers. That is a company disclosure about its business and market, not a controlled study proving a single cause, but it explains why category totals can be dominated by a few releases.
When a handful of series account for a disproportionate share of sports-game spending, the performance of one edition matters more than the number of smaller titles entering the market. A weaker year for several minor games may barely affect the category if a leading franchise remains near the top of the charts. Conversely, one blockbuster launch can lift the entire genre’s annual result.
Annualized brands reduce the risk of an unknown product
Annual sports releases are familiar products rather than entirely new properties. Electronic Arts describes its sports portfolio as annualized and points to established consumer bases and brand recognition as advantages when iterating on an existing game. A returning series already has an audience that knows the basic controls, modes and licensing proposition. That familiarity can make the next edition easier to market than a new intellectual property, even though it does not mean every owner buys every year.
The commercial benefit is not a guarantee. An annual game still needs acceptable quality, current licensing and a reason for existing players to upgrade. But a known name lowers the discovery problem that confronts a new release: consumers do not have to learn what the product is before deciding whether it belongs on their shortlist.

The real sports calendar supplies a recurring release occasion
Professional leagues and college seasons change continuously. Rosters, schedules, tournaments and team storylines give publishers a natural reason to return to the market. That recurring context helps explain why sports series can sustain an annual rhythm when a non-sports franchise might wait several years between installments.
The available sales evidence does not isolate roster updates or any other single feature as the reason an individual consumer purchases a new edition. The safer conclusion is that the live sports calendar provides a recurring commercial occasion; it does not prove that every buyer is motivated by the same update.
Revenue continues after the initial purchase
Modern sports businesses often earn money from an ongoing ecosystem rather than only from the launch transaction. Electronic Arts defines “live services” to include extra content, subscriptions, licensing and advertising. In fiscal 2026, the company reported $5.383 billion in live-services and other net revenue. Its global football and American-football franchises were among the drivers, but the figure covers the company as a whole and is not a sports-only total.
This distinction matters when someone says a sports franchise is “selling” well. A live-service figure is revenue, not a count of full-game copies. It can include spending by people who bought the game months earlier, and it can move independently from the launch performance of the newest edition.
Different live-service streams can move in opposite directions
Electronic Arts’ fiscal 2026 disclosure illustrates the separation. Extra-content sales in its global-football business were higher, while Madden NFL Ultimate Team sales were lower. Both statements can be true because they describe different products and audiences inside the same broad service model.

The same report noted year-over-year declines in full-game revenue for College Football and EA SPORTS FC, even as Battlefield 6 contributed to higher overall full-game revenue. These results show why a publisher’s total or a franchise’s service revenue should not be used as a shortcut for the sales of every new sports release.

NBA 2K26 demonstrates the mechanism in the 2025 U.S. data. It ranked second among all games and first among sports titles even though sports-game sales were down 8% from 2024. Piscatella said sales grew significantly compared with 2024 and that 2025 was the franchise’s second-best year for full-game dollar sales in the United States, behind 2020.
Several forces can produce that outcome at once:
- The franchise may attract a large, loyal audience that is less sensitive to a modest change in overall category spending.
- A strong release can gain share from competing games, so its rank improves even if the category total falls.
- The prior year may have been inflated by an exceptional launch, making the genre’s percentage decline look larger than a normal slowdown.
- Digital editions, deluxe versions and bundles can affect how chart positions appear when each is reported separately.
None of these points means that every sports title is protected from market conditions. They explain how concentration and release timing can make the strongest series look resilient while weaker titles contract.

The return of EA Sports College Football made 2024 an unusually strong year for sports games. Comparing 2025 with that record naturally produces a decline, even if 2025 remained healthy by longer-term standards. A year-over-year percentage does not tell you whether demand has collapsed; it tells you how the latest period compares with the specific period immediately before it.
Bundles add another complication. A bundle may contain multiple editions or versions, and chart systems can report those components separately. Piscatella’s warning about separately reported bundles means a small difference in rank should not automatically be treated as a precise difference in consumer demand.

What this pattern does—and does not—prove
It does show market concentration
The U.S. 2025 results show that a top sports game can remain a major seller while the genre declines. Electronic Arts’ disclosures also show why established annual franchises are strategically important to a publisher. Together, these facts support the idea that a few known brands can hold a large share of spending.
It does not show that sports games always outperform
Annual results vary. Electronic Arts reported declines in College Football and EA SPORTS FC full-game revenue in fiscal 2026, despite strength elsewhere in the portfolio. A successful series can have a down year, and a genre can grow or shrink for reasons that differ from the performance of its biggest brand.
It does not identify one universal consumer motive
The cited market and company reports describe outcomes, not interviews with every buyer. They do not establish that people purchase an annual sports game primarily for roster updates, online competition, loyalty to a team or any other single reason. Those are plausible explanations for the recurring release cycle, but the data here cannot assign a universal motive.
How to evaluate the next “sports games are booming” claim
- Check the geography. A U.S. result should not be presented as a worldwide result.
- Check the period. Calendar-year Circana data and a publisher’s fiscal-year report may cover different months.
- Identify the unit. Confirm whether the number refers to dollar sales, units, full-game revenue or live-service revenue.
- Separate genre from title. A high rank for one game does not establish growth for every sports game.
- Look for an unusual comparison year. A record launch, such as the 2024 return of EA Sports College Football, can distort the next year’s percentage change.
- Inspect bundle treatment. Separately reported editions can make close chart positions difficult to interpret.
- Ask who supplied the figure. A publisher’s disclosure is useful for understanding its business, but it is not the same as an independent causal study.
What players should take from the numbers
If you are deciding whether a sports series is commercially healthy, look beyond a single chart position. A leading edition can be thriving while the category cools; a publisher can report growing service revenue while a new game’s full-game sales decline; and a record prior year can make an ordinary year look weak.

The most defensible conclusion is narrower than “sports games always sell.” Established franchises have structural advantages: concentrated demand, recognizable annual brands and revenue streams that continue after launch. Those advantages help explain resilience, but they do not remove normal market risk or guarantee that the next edition will repeat the last one’s result.
