The right fix depends on your platform, hardware, and whether you’re seeing low frame rates, intermittent stutters, shadow flicker, or screen tearing. On PC, start with the checks below and change one setting at a time; compare results in the same place or activity. Bethesda says performance issues are often hardware-related, but its troubleshooting steps are not guaranteed to resolve every FPS problem.
First, identify the platform and symptom
Use the steps for your system: PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch 2 do not share all the same settings. Also distinguish between a consistently low frame rate, brief hitches, flickering shadows, and tearing across the image. Those symptoms point to different checks, and a PC overlay or driver instruction will not apply to a console.
Fix stuttering and low FPS on PC
Check the basic requirements and setup
- Compare your PC with the game’s minimum requirements. Bethesda’s PC performance guidance recommends checking that the hardware meets them.
- Make sure the game is installed on an SSD. Bethesda includes SSD storage in its PC performance checklist.
- Close unnecessary background applications. Then run the game and compare performance in the same location or activity.
- Update your graphics driver. Check Bethesda’s current support guidance for the recommended driver information; driver versions can change, so do not rely on an old version number.
Reduce graphics workload in a controlled order
Bethesda’s low-FPS guidance suggests testing display resolution, resolution scale, shadow quality, and global illumination quality. Lower one setting, restart the game, and check the same scene before changing another. If your hardware supports them, test DLSS or FSR as well. The available upscaling options depend on your graphics hardware and setup, and Bethesda does not promise a particular FPS improvement.
Check overlays, game files, and GPU selection
- Disable Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar and see whether the symptom changes.
- Verify the game files using the relevant launcher’s file-verification option.
- If you are on a laptop, confirm the game is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
- Check that Windows is using an appropriate high-performance power profile while you play.
- If manual graphics changes made performance worse, restore the game’s auto-detected settings and test again.
Test frame pacing and screen tearing
If the game feels uneven despite an acceptable average frame rate, try a frame-rate limit; Bethesda’s graphics guidance describes a limit as a way to improve frame pacing and stability. If the issue is tearing—horizontal breaks in the image while the camera moves—test V-Sync. Bethesda describes V-Sync as locking frame rate to the display’s refresh rate to reduce tearing. These settings address different presentation problems, so test them separately.

Check whether a known issue matches your report
Bethesda’s Update 1.2 notes, dated July 16, 2025, list a fix for shadow flicker when using XeSS upscaling. The notes also report reduced open-world hitch frequency, general frame-time improvements, and frame-rate fixes in several named locations. A reduction in hitch frequency does not mean all hitches are eliminated, and a listed location-specific fix does not establish that every remaining FPS drop has the same cause.
Improve performance on console
Bethesda’s low-FPS guidance recommends selecting Performance mode where that option is available. The Quality/Performance toggle described in that guidance is not available on Xbox Series S. Console players should use the options available for their own system; PC driver, overlay, GPU-selection, and file-verification steps do not apply to them.

- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
If the PC problem continues
If the preceding PC checks do not help, Bethesda suggests trying a new Windows profile and a selective startup to check whether another application or service is interfering. Its low-FPS guidance also invites players to provide feedback about unresolved problems. Change one variable at a time so you can tell whether a step made a difference.
