How to Fix Stuttering or Frame Drops on Steam Machine

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Start with the reversible checks: install every available SteamOS, Steam Machine, and relevant accessory firmware update; restart; disconnect unnecessary USB and Bluetooth devices; and return the game to a 1080p baseline with less demanding settings. Then reproduce the same scene while watching frame-time behavior, not only the FPS average. A high average can still look jerky when one frame takes unusually long to render.

These steps help separate a game-specific problem from a broader system or frame-pacing problem, but they cannot guarantee a universal fix. Steam Machine performance depends on the game, its default settings, the workload in the scene, and the rest of the setup.

Why is my Steam Machine stuttering?

“Stuttering” describes uneven delivery of frames. The counter may show a respectable average FPS while the image pauses briefly because one or more individual frames took much longer than the others. Steam’s overlay performance monitor specifically describes this kind of micro-stutter as the result of an individual long frame.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Frame drops” usually means the rendered frame rate falls when the workload becomes heavier. The two symptoms can appear together, but they are not identical: a sustained low frame rate points to a workload that is consistently too demanding, while intermittent hitches point toward frame pacing, a temporary system delay, a game-specific event, or another interaction that needs to be isolated.

There are two broad possibilities:

  • A title-specific issue: one game, mode, scene, graphics preset, or update behaves poorly while other games remain smooth.
  • A wider system or setup issue: several games show similar hitches, or the behavior follows the Steam Machine across different workloads.

Testing another game is useful evidence, not proof. One affected title does not prove that the hardware is fine, because that title may expose a driver, shader, memory, or settings problem that other games do not.

Use this order of operations

Work from the least disruptive checks to the more investigative ones. Change one variable at a time and reproduce the same scene or workload after each change. Otherwise, you may remove the symptom without learning which change mattered.

  1. Install SteamOS and Steam Machine updates, update relevant accessory firmware, and restart.
  2. Temporarily remove unnecessary USB and Bluetooth peripherals.
  3. Set a known resolution and graphics baseline, starting at 1080p.
  4. Reproduce the hitch in a repeatable scene and observe frame behavior.
  5. Compare the affected game with other games, while keeping the comparison qualified.
  6. Use game-specific telemetry where it exists, such as Source 2 multiplayer’s telemetry HUD.
  7. If the problem persists across titles and a simplified setup, document the pattern and escalate it as a possible system or hardware fault.

1. Update SteamOS, the machine, and connected hardware

Outdated software or firmware is the first thing to rule out because updating and restarting are reversible and do not require changing game files.

  1. Open Steam’s settings and check for available SteamOS software updates.
  2. Check for available Steam Machine hardware updates in Steam’s settings.
  3. If controllers, a puck, or a wireless adapter are part of the setup, check for their firmware updates as well.
  4. Install the updates, then restart the Steam Machine before testing again.

Do not judge the result from a different scene than the one that originally stuttered. Return to the same game, mode, location, and approximate workload so that the before-and-after comparison is meaningful. If the hitch began immediately after a game update, record the game version and when the change appeared; that pattern is useful when deciding whether the title itself needs attention.

2. Simplify the setup before changing performance settings

Disconnect unnecessary USB devices and temporarily turn off or remove unnecessary Bluetooth peripherals. Leave only the input and accessories required to reproduce the problem. This is an isolation test, not a permanent recommendation to run without your normal equipment.

  1. Shut down or exit the game.
  2. Disconnect nonessential USB devices.
  3. Temporarily disconnect or disable nonessential Bluetooth devices.
  4. Restart the same workload.
  5. If the stutter disappears, reconnect devices individually and retest after each change.

Steam notes that nearby radio-frequency-noisy devices can affect wireless connection stability. That observation is relevant when a controller or wireless connection is dropping input, but it is not evidence that wireless interference by itself causes GPU frame drops. Keep those diagnoses separate: an input or connection interruption may feel like a hitch, while a long rendered frame is a frame-pacing problem.

3. Establish a 1080p resolution and settings baseline

Check the game’s output resolution and graphics settings before drawing conclusions from FPS. Steam says that 1080p is the Steam Machine system default game resolution, labeled as the setting intended to provide a good gameplay experience. Valve also uses 1080p for Steam Machine Verified testing. That makes it a sensible baseline for troubleshooting, not a guarantee that every game will be smooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance still varies with each game’s default settings. A title may select effects, shadows, texture detail, or another workload that behaves differently from another title even at the same resolution.

  1. Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
  2. Confirm the output resolution. If it is above 1080p, temporarily return to 1080p.
  3. Temporarily reduce unusually demanding graphics options or use the game’s less demanding preset.
  4. Apply the changes and reproduce the same scene.
  5. Restore one setting at a time if performance improves, testing after each change to find which option changes the behavior.

If 1080p and reduced settings remove the drops, the original workload was too demanding for that title’s chosen configuration in the tested scene. If the hitch remains unchanged, resolution was probably not the only factor; continue with measurement and isolation rather than repeatedly lowering settings.

4. Measure the hitch, not just the FPS average

A high average FPS does not rule out visible stutter. The important question is whether frames arrive at regular intervals. One long frame can create a noticeable pause even when the average over a minute looks good.

Use Steam’s overlay performance monitor while reproducing the problem. Watch for a correlation between the visible hitch and an individual long frame or an uneven frame-time pattern. Record what you can consistently observe:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which game, mode, and scene produces the hitch.
  • Whether it happens at a repeatable location, action, or effect.
  • Whether the FPS falls for an extended period or only a single frame takes much longer.
  • Whether changing to 1080p or a lower preset changes the frequency or severity.
  • Whether the behavior appears in more than one title.
  • Whether disconnecting a particular accessory changes the result.

Use the same route through the same scene for each test. A repeatable workload is more informative than comparing unrelated gameplay moments. Keep a short record of each change and result so you do not accidentally combine several variables.

5. Decide whether the game or the wider system is the stronger suspect

Run at least one other game as a comparison, preferably with a repeatable scene and the same 1080p baseline. Interpret the result cautiously:

Observation What it suggests What it does not prove
Only one title stutters The title’s settings, workload, update, or implementation is a strong suspect. It does not prove the Steam Machine hardware is faultless.
Several titles stutter in similar conditions A broader system, firmware, frame-pacing, memory, or setup issue becomes more plausible. It does not identify the exact failing component.
Lowering resolution and settings helps The original workload was demanding in the tested scene. It does not establish that every hitch was caused by graphics load.
The overlay shows an isolated long frame The visible symptom is consistent with micro-stutter or uneven frame pacing. It does not by itself identify whether the game, system, or another component caused the long frame.

A single-game failure can still expose a system-level incompatibility. Conversely, several games can appear affected because they share a demanding setting or workload. Treat the comparison as a way to narrow possibilities, not as a pass/fail hardware test.

6. Consider memory pressure without importing Windows-only procedures

Steam’s general hardware guidance notes that low memory can lead to swapping and repeated frame-rate hitches. Swapping can make a game pause repeatedly as data is moved between memory and storage, which is consistent with intermittent drops rather than a simple, steady low-FPS result.

That guidance includes tool instructions intended for Windows. Do not copy Windows-specific monitoring or repair steps into SteamOS unless you have a SteamOS-specific source and understand what the tool changes. For this troubleshooting flow, use the behavior you can observe in Steam’s own overlay and the controlled comparisons above. If several games show repeated hitches, the issue persists after updates and a simplified setup, and the pattern points beyond one title, document those observations for support rather than installing unrelated Windows utilities.

7. Use Source 2 telemetry when the problem is multiplayer delay

In Source 2 multiplayer games, the telemetry HUD can help separate local game or computer delay from network or server delay. This is useful only in the telemetry context where the game exposes those measurements; it is not a universal diagnosis for every Steam Machine game or every kind of stutter.

When the HUD indicates local game or computer delay at the same moment as the hitch, continue investigating the machine, game settings, and frame timing. When it indicates network or server delay instead, lowering graphics settings is unlikely to fix that particular symptom. Record the telemetry category and the in-game moment so that you can report a specific network/server or local-performance pattern.

Common scenarios and the next test

The game is smooth in menus but hitches in a repeatable area

Return to that area after updates, then test 1080p and a less demanding preset. If the overlay shows a long frame at the same location, the scene’s workload or the title’s handling of that event is a stronger suspect than a general idle-system problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FPS is high, but motion still looks uneven

Check frame timing in Steam’s overlay rather than relying on the average. A single long frame can be visible as micro-stutter even when the average remains high.

Only wireless input seems to pause

Remove nearby or unnecessary wireless devices and test with the simplest controller setup. Steam’s note about radio-frequency noise concerns wireless connection stability; it should not be treated as proof of a graphics-performance fault.

Several games hitch after a long session

Restart first, then repeat the same tests after the machine is back at a clean baseline. If the behavior returns across titles despite current software, updated hardware firmware, a 1080p baseline, and no unnecessary peripherals, the evidence for a broader system issue is stronger.

The problem appears only above 1080p

Keep 1080p as the comparison setting and raise resolution only after the scene is stable. Valve’s 1080p default is intended as a good out-of-box gameplay baseline, while higher output resolution increases the workload in the tested configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to stop experimenting and escalate

Escalate the issue when it survives the basic isolation flow rather than making many unrelated changes. Before contacting support, collect a concise reproduction record:

  • SteamOS and Steam Machine update status.
  • Whether controller, puck, or wireless-adapter firmware was updated.
  • The game, mode, scene, and steps that reproduce the hitch.
  • Output resolution and the relevant graphics preset or settings.
  • Whether the overlay shows a sustained FPS fall or an individual long frame.
  • Whether the same behavior occurs in other games.
  • Which USB or Bluetooth devices were disconnected and whether that changed anything.
  • For applicable Source 2 multiplayer cases, whether telemetry identified local or network/server delay.

This record distinguishes a repeatable title-specific report from a cross-game machine problem and prevents support from having to guess which variable changed. If the symptom is present across multiple games after updates and a simplified setup, describe it as a possible system or hardware fault rather than claiming that a single game setting is responsible.

A compact decision checklist

  1. Updated and restarted? Install SteamOS, Steam Machine, and relevant accessory firmware updates, then restart.
  2. Simplified the setup? Disconnect unnecessary USB and Bluetooth devices and test again.
  3. Established a baseline? Use 1080p and temporarily less demanding graphics settings.
  4. Measured the event? Use Steam’s overlay performance monitor and look for long frames or sustained drops.
  5. Compared carefully? Test another title, remembering that one affected game does not clear the hardware.
  6. Checked the right telemetry? Use Source 2 multiplayer telemetry only when the symptom and game support that context.
  7. Documented the pattern? If the issue remains, provide the repeatable scene, settings, update state, peripherals, and measurements when escalating.

The Bottom Line

For Steam Machine stutter, update and restart first, simplify the connected hardware, return the game to a 1080p baseline, and measure frame timing during the exact hitch. Use cross-game comparisons and, where applicable, Source 2 telemetry to narrow the cause, but treat persistent cross-game stutter as a possible system issue rather than assuming one universal fix.
