How to Fix Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Online Lag and Connection Errors

Tell lag apart from matchmaking errors, check your Switch’s NAT and speeds, and work through Wi-Fi, Ethernet, game updates and network troubleshooting.

Start by testing the Switch’s connection, then change one thing at a time: check the game version, improve or compare the connection with wired Ethernet, and investigate NAT if matchmaking still fails. Lag during a match, trouble joining a match, and a temporary online suspension are different problems—and need different responses.

First identify the problem

When a match starts but controls respond slowly or characters jump around, you are dealing with lag, or latency. Slow internet speeds can contribute, but Nintendo also identifies weak Wi-Fi signal, wireless interference, and slow network-device response as possible causes. A faster internet plan is not automatically the answer.

If the console connects to Nintendo services but cannot join other players, or disconnects as a match begins, focus on connection stability and NAT. The Smash-specific message “You Cannot Play Online Battles Right Now” means the network could not continuously send or receive data, according to Nintendo’s error guidance. Other games may work while Smash still reports this issue.

A temporary online suspension is different from a network error. Nintendo says suspensions may follow behavior such as disconnecting during battles; if the game says you are suspended, wait for the suspension to expire rather than treating it as a connection setting to fix. See Nintendo’s suspension information.

Run the Switch connection test

  1. On the console, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection.
  2. Record whether the test connects, plus the NAT type, download speed, and upload speed shown.
  3. After each change below, run the test again and compare the results. This helps distinguish a change that improved the connection from one that did not.

Nintendo’s latency troubleshooting guidance compares connection-test results with 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload. These are Nintendo’s diagnostic comparison figures, not a guarantee of smooth matches or a complete measure of connection quality. Signal strength, interference, network equipment, and NAT can also matter. Nintendo’s explanation is at How to Reduce Lag.

Nintendo describes NAT types from A, best for peer-to-peer communication, through F, which cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. Its matchmaking support says NAT type F generally indicates restrictions that make connecting with other players impossible. A better result does not guarantee that every match will work: the other player’s network also matters. See Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting guidance.

Check for a game update and restart equipment

Install the latest available Super Smash Bros. Ultimate update, and ask the person you are trying to join to check their version too. Nintendo says players should have matching software versions. Its update page reports an update became available September 1, 2026, but update status can change; use the console’s current update check rather than relying on that date. Follow Nintendo’s software update instructions.

Restart the Switch and, if the connection seems slow or unstable, restart the modem and router. Nintendo lists wireless interference and unresponsive network equipment among possible causes of the Smash error. Make one change at a time, then test again so you can tell what helped.

Improve Wi-Fi or compare it with Ethernet

If you are using Wi-Fi

  • Move the console closer to the router and confirm that it is connected to the intended network. Nintendo recommends placing it within 10 feet of the router when setting up a strong wireless connection; this is practical guidance, not a guarantee, because walls, interference, and router placement affect signal.
  • Retest after moving the console. If the connection or match improves, wireless signal conditions may be contributing to the problem.

If you can test a wired connection

Ethernet is a useful comparison when Wi-Fi may be unstable, but it will not by itself fix restrictive NAT, an ISP problem, or the other player’s network. Connect the dock to the router with an Ethernet cable and select the wired connection in Internet Settings. The Switch OLED dock has a built-in LAN port. A standard Switch dock without one needs a compatible USB LAN adapter; Switch Lite needs a compatible licensed accessory plus a LAN adapter. Nintendo’s setup details are in its wired internet connection instructions.

If a wired test works better, Wi-Fi conditions are a likely contributor. If it does not, continue to the NAT and network checks rather than assuming that Ethernet should solve every connection problem. If the wired setup fails, try another Ethernet cable; Nintendo notes that a cable may be damaged.

Investigate NAT if matchmaking still fails

NAT restrictions can prevent connections with some players. Nintendo says both players’ NAT types can affect whether a peer-to-peer connection succeeds, so trouble joining one friend does not prove that your own Switch is faulty. Ask that player to run the same connection test and compare results.

If matches fail with multiple players, identify whether your home connection uses a modem/router combination or multiple network devices. Restart the network devices and retest after each change. Nintendo also suggests trying IPv6 off in relevant configurations. If you are unsure how to change that safely, ask your ISP or network administrator for help optimizing the connection for games. For router firmware or factory-reset questions, contact the router manufacturer. Nintendo’s guidance is at How to Troubleshoot NAT Issues.

A successful general internet test does not prove that Smash matchmaking will work. If a network change does not improve the relevant test or match behavior, undo it before trying another. Avoid making broad router changes based on a generic recipe; the right configuration depends on the router and network.

Know when to escalate

  • No devices in the home can access the internet: troubleshoot the modem/router and contact your ISP or network administrator.
  • Other devices work, but the Switch still fails after the documented checks: note the exact Smash error message or code and contact Nintendo Support.
  • Only one friend cannot join: ask them to test their connection and check NAT, since the issue may be on either side of the peer-to-peer connection.
