Joy-Con 2, older Joy-Con, and the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller use different pairing steps. The fixes below follow Nintendo’s guidance for each case, including problems limited to docked play.
First, identify the controller and the problem
Check whether you are using Joy-Con 2, an older Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, or the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Then identify what happens: the controller never pairs, disconnects after pairing, becomes unresponsive after Search for Controllers, or has trouble only when the console is docked. Those details determine which steps to try.
For Joy-Con pairing, the console must be powered on; Nintendo says pairing is not possible while it is asleep. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con pairing instructions.
Pair Joy-Con 2 or older Joy-Con wirelessly
- Wake the Switch 2 and leave it powered on.
- From HOME, select Controllers, then Change Grip and Order.
- Hold the controller’s SYNC button for at least one second.
- When its player LED(s) stay lit, follow the on-screen prompt to confirm the grip. Choose the displayed L/R or SL/SR button combination for the way you intend to hold it.
For Joy-Con 2, attaching the controllers to the Switch 2 pairs them. Detach them afterward to check whether they work wirelessly. If you are troubleshooting older Joy-Con, Nintendo’s separate older Joy-Con pairing guidance for Switch 2 recommends installing the latest system update and checking that the dock uses an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable; after changing the cable, reconnect through Controllers > Change Grip and Order and press SYNC.

Pair or recover the Switch 2 Pro Controller
- Install the latest system update. If the console is already up to date, restart it.
- Check the model number on the back of the controller, beneath the Nintendo logo. Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 Pro Controller as model BEE-008.
- With the console powered on and in its dock, connect the controller to the dock using the included USB-C cable, then press a controller button such as A.
- If wired pairing fails, press SYNC once and then another button. Try a different USB port on the dock, another USB-C charging cable, or a different dock; then try pairing wirelessly.
Nintendo says the BEE-008 Switch 2 Pro Controller is compatible only with Switch 2. If you are using a different controller model, confirm that it supports Switch 2 before treating the problem as a fault with the console. Read the player LEDs and check connection limits
Nintendo’s controller pairing FAQ explains what the player LEDs indicate:

- Flashing in sequence: the controller is connecting.
- Solid: the controller is connected.
- Flashing: the controller battery is very low.
Briefly pressing SYNC disconnects a wireless controller; press any button to reconnect it. To clear all wireless-controller pairing information, open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Disconnect Controllers.
Nintendo says Switch 2 supports up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances, but the number can vary with controller type, features, software, and local communication. Wireless left and right Joy-Con 2 count separately; attached Joy-Con 2 do not count against the wireless limit. If a Bluetooth audio device is connected, no more than two wireless controllers can be connected. Disconnect the audio device before trying to add a third controller.

Fix Joy-Con 2 that disconnect repeatedly
Check whether it happens only while docked
If the problem occurs in docked TV mode, check the dock’s cables and power adapter. Nintendo specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for the Switch 2 dock; the older Nintendo Switch HDMI cable is not Ultra High Speed. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 disconnection guidance also specifies the Switch 2 AC adapter, model NGN-01, or another adapter rated for at least 54 W output. These are docked-mode requirements, not a guaranteed fix for every dropout. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 disconnection troubleshooting.
Update, reset, and test the connection
- Install the latest system update, then restart the console.
- Update controller firmware at System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers.
- Detach and reattach the Joy-Con 2. For a wireless reset and reconnection, press SYNC once, then press another button.
- Test in Airplane Mode with Bluetooth turned back on.
- Move the console away from possible interference. Nintendo advises checking whether it is behind a television, under metal, or within four feet of wireless devices such as speakers or cordless phones.
- If available, test another Joy-Con 2 to see whether the problem follows one controller or affects more than one.
If only one Joy-Con 2 has the problem, Nintendo says that controller may need service. If multiple Joy-Con 2 have the same issue, service may be needed for the controllers and console.

Recover a controller that stopped responding after Search for Controllers
If a controller becomes unresponsive after using Search for Controllers, wait 30 seconds before trying to reconnect it. Then press SYNC once, press another button such as A to power it on, and pair it again. Nintendo says a controller that remains unresponsive or cannot pair should be sent for repair. Contact Nintendo support or arrange service if the relevant pairing steps fail, a Pro Controller will not pair wired or wirelessly, a controller remains unresponsive after the Search for Controllers recovery steps, or repeated Joy-Con 2 dropouts persist after troubleshooting. When seeking help, note the controller type and model, whether the fault affects one or several controllers, and whether it occurs docked, undocked, or both; those details match Nintendo’s troubleshooting branches.
