The usual cause is a streamed request using Transfer-Encoding: chunked (or no length header) sent to a strict Nginx, Apache, proxy, load balancer, CDN, or application. Send an exact byte count when the payload size is known; otherwise buffer the payload or configure the receiving hop to accept chunked requests.

What HTTP 411 means
MDN defines 411 as a client error returned when a server refuses to accept a request without a defined Content-Length header: MDN HTTP 411 reference. The status concerns the framing of the request body, not the size of the body itself.

HTTP/1.1 can frame a request body in two relevant ways:
- Fixed length:
Content-Lengthcontains the exact number of bytes that follow. - Chunked transfer:
Transfer-Encoding: chunkedsends the body as a sequence of chunks and therefore does not provide one overall length in advance.
RFC 7230 allows a server to reject a request containing a body but no Content-Length with 411, and recommends sending a valid length whenever the sender knows the body size because some services still reject chunked requests: IETF RFC 7230. A server that accepts chunked encoding should not normally need 411, but compatibility systems, old applications, and intermediary configurations can insist on fixed-length framing.

Find the hop that generated 411
Do not change Nginx or Apache configuration until you know which component emitted the response. A request can pass through a client, CDN, edge proxy, reverse proxy, load balancer, web server, and application server; any one of them can reject it.
- Capture the failing request at the client. Record the method, whether a body is present,
Content-Length,Transfer-Encoding,Expect, and the response headers, especiallyServer. - Inspect each proxy hop’s access and error logs and correlate timestamps, request IDs, and status codes.
- Repeat the request directly against the origin, bypassing the CDN or reverse proxy when that is safe. A direct success with a proxied failure identifies a framing or policy difference between the paths.
- Compare the request arriving at the rejecting hop with the original request. A proxy may remove, add, or transform framing headers.
A 411 page displayed by a CDN does not prove that the CDN created it. Cloudflare documents that its 411 response page is proxied from the origin: Cloudflare 411 troubleshooting. Check the origin’s logs and response headers before changing edge settings.

Fix a request whose size is known
Serialize the body first, measure its encoded byte length, and send that exact decimal value. The count is bytes on the wire, not characters. For UTF-8 text, one visible character can occupy multiple bytes.
- Produce the final payload, including all whitespace and encoding conversions.
- Encode it exactly as the HTTP client will send it, normally UTF-8 for JSON.
- Count the resulting bytes.
- Send one
Content-Lengthheader with that count. - Do not send a non-identity
Transfer-Encodingheader alongside it.
curl example
For ordinary fixed-size data, curl calculates the length for --data-binary:
body='{"name":"Ada"}'
curl -X POST https://example.test/api
-H 'Content-Type: application/json'
--data-binary "$body"
Keep the payload in the same form that is measured and transmitted. Avoid curl options, wrappers, or libraries that force chunked streaming when the endpoint requires a fixed length. If you explicitly add a header, its value must equal the byte count of the final encoded body; adding Content-Length: 0 to a non-empty request creates a mismatch and can cause truncation or rejection.
Application-code pattern
Use your HTTP library’s fixed-length request mode rather than its streaming mode. Convert the object to bytes once, calculate the byte-array length, and pass that same byte array to the request body. Do not calculate the length from a Unicode string before encoding, and do not mutate or compress the body after calculating it. Log the outgoing framing during diagnosis, but avoid logging sensitive payloads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPOST, PUT, and empty-body requests
The method alone does not determine whether 411 occurs. A POST or PUT with a body needs valid framing, while an intentionally empty request should not be given a fabricated nonzero length. Verify what the client actually sends rather than assuming that a method implies a payload. If middleware adds a body, compression, or form fields after your application calculated the length, recalculate from the final bytes or let the HTTP library construct the request.

Nginx: stop sending incompatible chunked requests
Nginx exposes the chunked_transfer_encoding on|off directive, whose documented default is on. Disabling it can help when Nginx communicates with software that fails to support chunked encoding. The directive is valid in the http, server, or location context; scope it as narrowly as possible: Nginx HTTP core module documentation.
Location-specific compatibility configuration
location /legacy-upstream/ {
chunked_transfer_encoding off;
proxy_pass http://legacy_backend;
}
- Put the directive in the location that talks to the legacy service, not globally unless every endpoint has the same requirement.
- Validate syntax with
nginx -t. - Reload only after the test succeeds, for example with your service manager’s Nginx reload command.
- Repeat the request and inspect both Nginx logs and the upstream’s received headers.
This setting controls Nginx’s transfer behavior; it cannot repair a client that sends an incorrect or mismatched Content-Length. If the client declares 100 bytes but sends 80, changing Nginx’s chunking policy does not make the request valid.
When the upstream response is the problem
Nginx’s FAQ explains that a backend using chunked encoding in an HTTP/1.0 response violates the HTTP specification. The recommended solution is to fix the backend or use a newer Nginx version that handles the errant behavior: Nginx FAQ: chunked encoding from backend. This is a response-side compatibility issue, distinct from a client request that receives 411, so confirm the direction of the failing message in your logs.
Buffering and resource trade-offs
Turning off chunked transfer can require Nginx to know the complete body length before forwarding it. For large uploads or genuinely streaming endpoints, that can increase memory use, temporary-disk use, latency, or timeout exposure. Apply the change only to the incompatible route and test a small request and a production-sized payload.
Nginx-specific checks
Check the effective configuration, not only the file you edited. A broader http rule, an included file, or a more specific location can change the behavior you expect. Confirm which upstream URL the location selects and whether another internal redirect handles the request. Access-log fields showing request length, upstream status, and request time can help distinguish a rejection before proxying from a 411 returned by the upstream. Keep a direct-origin test available so you can tell whether the directive changed Nginx’s outbound framing or merely changed where the failure is observed.
Apache httpd with mod_proxy
Apache’s mod_proxy documentation says a proxied request body is sent either with chunked transfer encoding or with a Content-Length. If the upstream returns 411, set the proxy-sendcl environment variable so Apache sends a fixed length. The opposite variable, proxy-sendchunked, forces chunked encoding. Apache describes proxy-sendcl as the maximum-compatibility choice, while warning that large chunked bodies may be spooled to disk when Apache must determine their length: Apache HTTP Server 2.4 documentation.
Route-specific configuration
<Location "/legacy-upstream/">
ProxyPass "http://legacy-backend/"
SetEnv proxy-sendcl 1
</Location>
- Enable the modules required by your existing proxy setup, including
mod_proxyand the protocol module used by the upstream. - Set
proxy-sendclonly for the incompatible route. - Check the configuration with your Apache syntax-test command.
- Reload Apache, then verify the request headers observed by the upstream.
Do not set both proxy-sendcl and proxy-sendchunked for the same request. Choose fixed length for a legacy upstream that returns 411; choose chunked only when the receiving service explicitly supports it and streaming is important.

HTTP/1.0 and keep-alive compatibility
If logs or packet captures show that the origin speaks HTTP/1.0 or has broken keep-alive behavior, Apache documents force-proxy-request-1.0 and proxy-nokeepalive as additional compatibility controls. They address protocol-version or connection reuse problems, not a missing request length, so do not use them as a substitute for proxy-sendcl when the observed failure is 411.
Spooling and capacity planning
For a streamed body whose final size is unknown, Apache may need to spool it before it can send a fixed Content-Length. Check available temporary-disk space, request timeouts, and concurrent-upload limits before applying the setting to large file or game-build uploads. A route that was previously streamed can experience higher latency after conversion to fixed-length forwarding.
Apache-specific checks
Confirm that the SetEnv directive is applied to the same URL space handled by ProxyPass; a mismatch can leave the upstream on its previous framing mode. Review both the front-end request log and the proxy error log, then inspect the backend’s access log if available. If Apache is behind another proxy, capture the request on both sides because an outer hop can reframe it before Apache sees it. Keep proxy-sendcl route-scoped so endpoints designed for streaming are not silently converted to disk-buffered requests.
When the body length is unknowable
Do not guess a length. A guessed value can cause the receiver to wait for bytes that never arrive, truncate the body, or reject the request as malformed.
- Buffer before sending: collect the stream, encode it, calculate its byte length, then issue a fixed-length request. This is appropriate when payloads fit your memory or temporary-storage budget.
- Use an explicit streaming path: configure the receiving server and every intermediary to accept
Transfer-Encoding: chunkedcorrectly. Confirm that no hop requires 411 and that request-size, timeout, and security policies still apply. - Use a protocol-specific upload mechanism: if the application offers resumable or multipart uploads, follow that protocol instead of forcing a generic HTTP body through a legacy endpoint.
Changing a body-size limit is not a 411 fix. Nginx’s client_max_body_size and Apache request-size limits govern how large a body may be and normally produce a 413 response when exceeded; they do not supply a missing Content-Length.
Choosing between buffering and streaming
Buffering gives the receiver a deterministic byte count but moves the storage cost to the client, proxy, or web server. For small JSON or form submissions, that trade-off is usually negligible. For multi-gigabyte uploads, buffering can consume temporary disk, increase time to first byte, and create failures when several requests arrive concurrently. Streaming avoids that initial storage requirement but only works when every hop understands chunked framing and applies compatible timeout and security policies. Decide per route, document the choice, and test the largest expected payload rather than relying on a small health check.
Header combinations to avoid
Content-Length: 0 on a non-empty body
This tells the receiver that no bytes belong to the request. The body can be discarded, the connection can become desynchronized, or the request can be rejected. Remove the manual header and let the client calculate it, or calculate the real byte count.

Content-Length plus chunked Transfer-Encoding
RFC 7230 specifies that a non-identity Transfer-Encoding governs message framing and that Content-Length must be ignored. Sending both creates ambiguity that can enable request-smuggling vulnerabilities and produce different interpretations at different hops. Send one unambiguous framing method.

Changing unrelated limits
Raising upload limits, increasing proxy buffers, or disabling request filtering may mask symptoms while leaving the framing error untouched. First prove which header reached the component that returned 411.
Rewriting headers in multiple layers
A client library, service mesh, CDN, and reverse proxy can each have their own request-body policy. Avoid “fixes” that add a second length header or copy a stale value after a transformation. Compression, character-set conversion, multipart boundary generation, and middleware-added fields all change the bytes that must be counted. The final hop should receive one authoritative framing decision.
A repeatable verification procedure
- Start with a small known-size body and a request that includes the correct byte count.
- Confirm that the client sends exactly one framing method: a correct
Content-Lengthor deliberately supported chunked encoding. - Check the request at every proxy boundary, not only at the client.
- Compare a direct-to-origin request with the same request through Nginx, Apache, and any CDN or load balancer.
- Repeat with the real payload size and encoding, including non-ASCII text or compression if the application uses them.
- Review access and error logs for rewritten headers, premature connection closes, upstream status codes, buffering, and temporary-file failures.
- After the fix, test malformed lengths and rejected routes in a staging environment so the compatibility change does not weaken validation elsewhere.
- Roll back a directive if it causes unacceptable buffering, disk consumption, latency, or streaming failures, and scope the compatibility rule more narrowly.
Evidence to retain during an incident
Save a redacted request trace, the response headers, timestamps, request ID, and the relevant Nginx or Apache log lines. Note whether the same payload succeeds directly and fails through a proxy. This record makes it easier to prove whether a later change fixed the emitting hop or only altered the error page. Never include credentials or sensitive body contents in a diagnostic capture.

What a successful fix looks like
The final request arriving at the rejecting hop has a body, one valid framing method, and a byte count that exactly matches the body. A fixed-length request contains a decimal Content-Length and no conflicting non-identity Transfer-Encoding. A streamed request is accepted only when every receiving hop is configured and tested for chunked framing. Once those conditions are true, the 411 response should disappear without changing unrelated upload-size limits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I getting 411 Length Required?
The hop that returned the response requires a defined request length and did not receive a usable Content-Length. The request may have no length header, may use chunked transfer encoding that the hop does not accept, or may have conflicting framing headers. Capture the request and identify the emitting hop before changing configuration.
How do I add Content-Length to a POST or PUT request?
Create the final body first, encode it exactly as transmitted, count its bytes, and send one decimal Content-Length with that value. Most clients, including curl with --data-binary, calculate it automatically for a known-size body. Do not count Unicode characters instead of encoded bytes.

Why does Nginx reject chunked uploads?
The Nginx route may be forwarding to software that requires fixed-length framing. Scope chunked_transfer_encoding off to that location, validate with nginx -t, reload, and verify the upstream headers. The directive does not correct an invalid length supplied by the client and can introduce buffering costs.
How do I make Apache proxy-send Content-Length to my backend?
Set the proxy-sendcl environment variable on the affected proxy route, for example with SetEnv proxy-sendcl 1 inside the matching Location. Validate and reload Apache, then inspect the backend request. Apache may spool a streamed body to determine its final length.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I set Content-Length: 0 to avoid a 411?
No. Use zero only when the request truly has no body. On a non-empty request it creates a mismatch that can cause truncation, connection desynchronization, or rejection.
Can I send both Content-Length and Transfer-Encoding: chunked?
Do not do so. Under RFC 7230, non-identity transfer encoding controls framing and the declared length is ignored. The conflicting headers can be interpreted differently by intermediaries and create security and reliability problems.
Is a 411 from Cloudflare necessarily a Cloudflare error?
No. Cloudflare documents that its displayed 411 page can be proxied from the origin. Compare a direct-to-origin request, inspect origin logs, and examine response headers to locate the component that actually rejected the request.
Will increasing Nginx or Apache upload limits fix 411?
Normally no. Body-size limits address oversized payloads and generally produce 413, whereas 411 indicates missing or unacceptable framing. Fix the request length or chunked-encoding compatibility first.
What if the upload size cannot be known in advance?
Do not guess. Buffer the stream and send an exact length if storage allows, or configure every receiving hop to support chunked framing. A resumable or multipart upload protocol may be preferable for very large bodies.
The Bottom Line
Trace the 411 to the hop that emitted it, then choose one unambiguous framing method. For a known body, send the exact encoded byte count in Content-Length and omit conflicting transfer encoding. For a legacy upstream, scope Nginx’s chunked_transfer_encoding off or Apache’s proxy-sendcl to the affected route, validate the configuration, and test buffering and disk impact. Never guess a length or change unrelated upload limits.
