What the Arma 3 out-of-memory message actually means
Arma 3 can fail when any one of several memory resources is exhausted. System RAM holds the game, Windows, background applications, and loaded world data. Your graphics card’s VRAM holds textures, render targets, and other video resources. Windows also needs enough commit space, backed by RAM and the page file, to honor memory allocations. Finally, the game’s allocator and the way a particular mission or mod requests memory can determine whether an allocation succeeds.

That is why the same wording can appear on two very different computers. A machine with adequate physical RAM can still crash after a texture-heavy scene exhausts VRAM. A system with free RAM can fail when its page file is disabled and commit space is full. A mod or mission can reproduce the error while the default game remains stable. Treat the message as a capacity or allocation diagnosis, not proof that one physical component is defective.

These figures are Bohemia Interactive’s current published requirements. They are baselines, not a guarantee that every workshop mission or mod combination will fit. If your computer is below either minimum, settings changes may provide only partial relief. If it is below the 16 GB RAM recommendation, a compatible 16 GB desktop memory kit is a sensible capacity upgrade, provided your motherboard supports the memory generation, number of modules, and total capacity.

Diagnose the constrained resource before changing settings
Start by recording the conditions of the crash. Note the exact error text, mission, map, player count, mod set, graphics preset, resolution, and launch parameters. Also record installed system RAM, GPU memory, graphics-driver version, and whether the failure began after an update or hardware change. A pattern is often more useful than the wording alone.
- Crashes after loading a detailed scene or when textures are high: suspect VRAM pressure first.
- Crashes only with browsers, recording software, overlays, or launchers open: suspect system-RAM or Windows-commit pressure.
- Crashes only on one mission, map, or mod combination: isolate content before changing global settings.
- Crashes across clean sessions with current files: investigate page-file configuration, allocator behavior, drivers, and hardware capacity.
Use Windows Task Manager while reproducing the issue when practical. The Performance view can show system memory and GPU memory use; the Processes view helps identify browsers, launchers, overlays, recording tools, and other programs consuming resources. A measurement taken just before the crash is more informative than an idle reading after the game has closed.

Fix the problem in the lowest-risk order
1. Close programs competing for memory
Before launching Arma 3, close applications that are not needed for the session. That includes browser windows with many tabs, other game launchers, hardware-monitoring or recording tools, chat overlays, and background utilities. Bohemia Interactive’s performance guidance specifically recommends closing unnecessary programs for out-of-memory errors.
Do not terminate Windows services at random. Close a program normally, then check Task Manager to confirm that its process has exited. If the crash disappears, reopen programs one at a time to identify the conflict. An overlay that is harmless in the menu can consume additional memory when a mission loads, so test the actual scenario in which the error occurs.

2. Make sure Windows has a usable page file
The page file is part of Windows virtual memory and contributes to the system’s commit limit. If it is disabled or too small for the workload, Arma 3 can fail even when Task Manager appears to show unused physical RAM. Bohemia Interactive’s troubleshooting guidance recommends increasing the page file for out-of-memory errors.
- Open Windows Search and enter Advanced system settings.
- Open View advanced system settings, then select the Advanced tab.
- Under Performance, choose Settings, open the Advanced tab, and select Change in the Virtual memory section.
- Ensure that virtual memory is enabled. A system-managed page file is a reasonable starting point when you do not have a measured reason to set a manual size.
- If you change the setting, apply it and restart Windows before retesting the same mission.
There is no single page-file number that is correct for every Windows configuration. Available disk space, installed RAM, other applications, and the game’s workload all affect the required commit space. Do not apply a universal “initial size” or “maximum size” copied from an unrelated system. If the page file is already enabled and the crash remains, continue with the VRAM, content, and allocator checks instead of repeatedly enlarging it.

If the crash appears when high textures, long view distances, or high-resolution rendering are enabled, lower the settings that create the largest VRAM footprint. Start with Texture, because Bohemia Interactive specifically identifies it as the setting to lower when video RAM is exhausted. Reduce other video options only as needed, then retest the exact mission that failed.
- Open Arma 3’s video options from the main menu.
- Lower Texture first. If the game still fails, reduce demanding distance or rendering options and, if necessary, the output resolution.
- Use the game’s auto-detect result as a baseline, then make one deliberate change at a time.
- Restart the mission and check whether the error occurs at the same loading point.
A setting that fits a small single-player scene can still exceed VRAM in a large multiplayer operation with high-resolution assets. Lowering textures addresses video-memory demand; it does not add system RAM or repair a faulty mod, so a separate content test is still required if the crash is mission-specific.

4. Add system RAM when capacity is persistently short
Arma 3 lists 16 GB of system RAM as the recommended amount. If your computer has less than that and crashes continue after closing competing programs and configuring virtual memory, a memory upgrade can remove a persistent capacity constraint. Select a compatible 16 GB desktop RAM kit only after checking the motherboard manual or manufacturer specifications for memory generation, supported speeds, available slots, module limits, and maximum total capacity.
More RAM is not a guaranteed cure for a VRAM exhaustion or allocator problem. It also cannot correct a mission that requests invalid or impractical resources. Treat the upgrade as a hardware-capacity fix when the machine is below the recommendation, not as a reason to skip the software diagnosis.

5. Isolate mods, missions, and damaged files
Reproduce the crash with nonessential mods disabled. Use a known-good profile and a simple scenario first, then load the original mission. If the clean test works, re-enable mods in groups rather than all at once. When a group reproduces the crash, halve that group and retest until the responsible mod or interaction is identified. Keep a written record of the exact load order, map, mission, and error text.
If the failure started after an update or installation change, use Steam’s file-integrity verification for Arma 3. The verification process can replace damaged or missing base files, but it will not make an incompatible third-party mod safe. After verification, run one unmodded test before restoring the previous mod set.

Content isolation also distinguishes a global memory shortage from a reproducible scenario defect. A crash that follows one mod across several profiles deserves different escalation evidence from a crash that follows every mission on the computer.
Use launcher memory parameters as controlled diagnostics
The Arma 3 launcher exposes Malloc, MaxMem, and MaxVRAM controls. These options can help diagnose allocation behavior, but they are not guaranteed cures. Bohemia Interactive’s startup-parameter guidance says: “In general, it makes sense not using this parameter at all and only resort to it in case you experience issues with memory.” Start with the default launcher configuration, record it, and change only one parameter per test.
MaxMem
-maxMem is an allocation-limit request. It does not guarantee that total process allocation can never exceed the stated value, and setting an arbitrary value can make the available memory model worse rather than better. If you test it, make a single change, reproduce the same mission, and revert it if there is no improvement or stability declines.
MaxVRAM
-maxVRAM changes the value Arma 3 uses when managing video-memory allocation. It cannot create physical VRAM. A value that does not reflect the graphics card and current workload can produce no benefit or make resource management less effective. Lowering Texture and other video options is the safer first response when evidence points to VRAM exhaustion.

Malloc
The allocator controls how the game obtains and releases memory. Arma 3 documents tbb4malloc_bi as the default allocator family and also supports jemalloc_bi and system. Allocator choice can affect performance and stability differently on different systems. Test an alternative only after the basic capacity, page-file, video, and mod checks are complete. Keep the original selection recorded so you can return to it immediately.

- Change one control, leaving the other two at their previous values.
- Launch the same profile, mission, map, resolution, and mod set.
- Run enough of the scenario to reach the point that normally fails.
- Restore the prior value if the crash changes, worsens, or becomes less reproducible.
Bohemia Interactive’s unusual-process-exit guidance also mentions checking for registry overrides that force large-page behavior and trying another allocator. Do not edit the registry casually: document any override, make a backup according to your normal Windows administration practice, and remove a forced setting if it was added for an earlier experiment and is no longer needed.

When the error persists after the basic fixes
Perform one clean-room test before escalating. Use current base files, a clean profile, no nonessential mods, conservative video settings, the normal allocator, and no experimental memory parameters. Reproduce the same mission or use a simple known-good scenario first. This test tells support whether the failure follows the base game or a particular content and configuration combination.
If the clean test still fails, collect evidence while the details are fresh:
- the exact on-screen error and the time it appeared;
- installed system RAM and GPU memory;
- Windows edition and graphics-driver version;
- the mission, map, player context, resolution, and video settings;
- the complete mod list and load order, even if mods were disabled for one comparison;
- all launcher parameters, including Malloc, MaxMem, and MaxVRAM;
- the relevant RPT and crash logs.
Use Bohemia Interactive’s support or feedback channels with that information. A report that says “it crashes” cannot distinguish a VRAM limit from a page-file issue or a mod interaction; a report containing the clean-test result and configuration can.
Compatibility and 32-bit-build caveats
Bohemia Interactive’s known-issues material documents compatibility caveats for 32-bit builds. A 32-bit process has a more constrained address space than a 64-bit process, so an out-of-memory failure can occur even when the computer has substantial physical RAM installed. If the crash is tied to a 32-bit build or compatibility mode, include that fact in the support report rather than assuming a RAM upgrade will solve it.
Do not use a 32-bit compatibility setting as a general troubleshooting step. First establish which executable and launch configuration are actually being used, then compare a clean, current installation without forced compatibility overrides.
