How to Use WordPress as a Headless CMS With SvelteKit

A practical guide to building a headless WordPress frontend with SvelteKit, including REST versus WPGraphQL, route data loading, pagination, previews, security, rendering and deployment.

Use WordPress for editing and content storage, then let SvelteKit own the public website. SvelteKit requests posts, pages, media and taxonomy data through WordPress’s REST API or an installed WPGraphQL plugin, renders that data into routes and components, and delivers the result with server-side rendering, prerendering or client-side rendering as appropriate.

The most reliable implementation keeps API credentials and preview logic on the server, normalizes WordPress responses in one small data layer, maps WordPress slugs to SvelteKit routes, and chooses the rendering and deployment strategy per route rather than treating the whole site as one application.

What a headless WordPress and SvelteKit architecture does

In a traditional WordPress site, WordPress stores content and also generates the HTML visitors receive. In a headless arrangement, those responsibilities are separated:

  • WordPress remains the CMS. Editors use the WordPress dashboard to create posts, pages, media, categories, tags and custom content.
  • SvelteKit becomes the presentation layer. It owns URL routing, layouts, components, metadata, browser interactions and the HTML sent to visitors.
  • An API connects the two. SvelteKit reads JSON from WordPress’s built-in REST API or queries a GraphQL schema supplied by WPGraphQL.

A typical request looks like this: a visitor opens /blog/example-post; SvelteKit’s route load function extracts the slug; the server requests the matching WordPress record; the response is validated and transformed; and a Svelte component renders the title, excerpt, content, image and metadata. On later navigations, SvelteKit can fetch only the data needed for the next route instead of reloading the entire document.

This separation is useful when the same editorial content must serve a custom game site, a mobile client, an application shell or several frontends. It also means you must design API contracts, caching, previews, authentication and deployment explicitly instead of receiving those behaviors automatically from a monolithic WordPress theme.

Requirements before you start

  • A working WordPress installation with its public origin, for example https://cms.example.com.
  • A current SvelteKit project and a deployment adapter supported by your target host.
  • Permission to install or configure WordPress plugins if you plan to use WPGraphQL.
  • A clear content model: which post types, fields, taxonomies, images and relationships the frontend needs.
  • A decision about which routes need fresh server-rendered data and which can be rebuilt or rendered in the browser.

Public WordPress content is generally readable without credentials. Private or password-protected content, internal users and protected metadata require authentication or explicit exposure. Treat that distinction as an architectural boundary: anything needed only by the server must never be placed in a public environment variable or bundled into browser JavaScript.

Choose the WordPress API

Both APIs can power a SvelteKit frontend. The right choice depends on the shape of the content and how much control the frontend needs over each request.

Decision point WordPress REST API WPGraphQL
Setup Built into WordPress; no additional plugin is required for core post, page, media, taxonomy and search resources. Requires the free, open-source WPGraphQL plugin and any extensions needed for custom fields or post types.
Request style Resource-oriented JSON URLs such as /wp-json/wp/v2/posts and /wp-json/wp/v2/pages. POST a query to the GraphQL endpoint and select the fields the page needs.
Field precision Responses follow endpoint schemas; parameters and embedding reduce extra requests but may still return more structure than a page uses. Each query explicitly selects fields, which is useful for pages with different data requirements.
Relationships Related resources can require additional requests or embedding. Nested fields can traverse related entities in one query when the schema exposes those relationships.
Pagination Uses endpoint parameters and response headers; collection endpoints return a limited number of items by default. Uses Relay-style connections with arguments such as first and after, preserving cursors between requests.
Dependency footprint Uses WordPress core behavior and familiar HTTP tools. Adds a plugin, schema maintenance and GraphQL-specific tooling.
Schema discovery The API index and OPTIONS requests expose endpoint capabilities. Schema introspection documents available types, fields and arguments.
Preview workflow Protected data needs an authentication design appropriate to the endpoint. Supports a documented preview header flow for authenticated editors.

When REST is the better starting point

Choose REST for a straightforward blog, news archive or brochure site whose pages mostly map to WordPress resources. It is already present, its URLs are easy to inspect, and the small dependency footprint keeps the first implementation simple. REST also makes troubleshooting with ordinary HTTP status codes and browser or command-line requests straightforward.

When WPGraphQL is worth adding

Use WPGraphQL when a page needs a precise field set, several related entities, or a consistent typed contract shared by multiple developers. Its connection model is especially helpful for archives that combine cursor pagination with nested author, category or custom-field data. Confirm that every custom post type and field your frontend needs is exposed in the installed schema; plugin-specific extensions can change the available names and filters.

This is a practical engineering rule, not a published performance benchmark. Measure the actual queries, cache behavior and operational cost of your project rather than assuming one API is universally faster.

Create the SvelteKit project and server configuration

  1. Create the application. Start a SvelteKit project using the framework version and adapter supported by your deployment target. Keep the WordPress origin out of component code so it can differ between development, staging and production.
  2. Define a private environment variable. Set WORDPRESS_URL to the origin only, without appending /wp-json or /graphql. Use the SvelteKit server-only environment module appropriate to your version, such as $env/dynamic/private.
  3. Choose a data boundary. Put reusable URL construction, request checks and response normalization in an API module. Keep route-specific decisions in the route’s server load function.
  4. Decide what can be public. A browser may fetch genuinely public content directly, but credentials, preview tokens and privileged queries belong in server-only files and server load functions.
  5. Establish a content policy. Decide whether WordPress’s rendered HTML is trusted, sanitized, transformed into a restricted format, or replaced with structured fields. Apply that policy before inserting HTML into a Svelte component.

The exact environment-variable module and adapter configuration vary by SvelteKit version. Follow the conventions of the version installed in the project rather than copying an import from an older application.

Implement a REST-backed post route

Build the slug route

Create a route such as src/routes/blog/[slug]/+page.server.ts. A server load function is the natural place for a request that should happen before the initial HTML is generated or that may eventually require credentials.

import { error } from '$app/server';
import { env } from '$env/dynamic/private';

export async function load({ params, fetch }) {
  const endpoint = `${env.WORDPRESS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?slug=${encodeURIComponent(params.slug)}&_embed`;
  const response = await fetch(endpoint);

  if (!response.ok) {
    throw error(response.status, 'WordPress request failed');
  }

  const posts = await response.json();
  if (!posts.length) {
    throw error(404, 'Post not found');
  }

  return { post: posts[0] };
}

Use the error helper and import path required by the SvelteKit version in your project; the example illustrates the flow rather than fixing a version-specific API. The important behaviors are encoding the slug, checking the HTTP status, handling an empty result as a 404, and returning only the record the page needs.

Render the response

WordPress REST responses commonly include fields such as title.rendered, excerpt.rendered and content.rendered. With _embed, related data such as featured media may be present in an embedded property. Normalize those nested values in one place so components do not depend on raw WordPress response details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
function normalizePost(raw) {
  return {
    id: raw.id,
    slug: raw.slug,
    title: raw.title?.rendered ?? '',
    excerpt: raw.excerpt?.rendered ?? '',
    html: raw.content?.rendered ?? '',
    image: raw._embedded?.['wp:featuredmedia']?.[0] ?? null,
    date: raw.date
  };
}

Only render html with Svelte’s HTML mechanism after applying the project’s sanitization or trust policy. WordPress content can contain markup, embeds and attributes that your frontend may not want to pass through unchanged. A safer alternative for highly controlled content is to expose structured fields and render each field with a dedicated component.

Fetch archives and add pagination

Collection endpoints return a limited number of items by default. An archive therefore needs explicit pagination parameters and a way to expose the total or next-page state to the UI. A REST request can include parameters such as page, per_page, taxonomy filters and search terms.

const page = Number(url.searchParams.get('page') ?? '1');
const endpoint = `${env.WORDPRESS_URL}/wp-json/wp/v2/posts?page=${page}&per_page=12&_embed`;
const response = await fetch(endpoint);

if (response.status === 400) {
  throw error(404, 'Archive page does not exist');
}
if (!response.ok) {
  throw error(response.status, 'Archive request failed');
}

const posts = await response.json();
const totalPages = Number(response.headers.get('X-WP-TotalPages') ?? '1');
return { posts, page, totalPages };

Keep the pagination state in the URL so links can be shared and crawlers can discover archive pages. If a category or custom post type uses a different REST route, verify its namespace and exposed query parameters instead of assuming it behaves exactly like posts.

Implement the same route with WPGraphQL

Install and inspect the schema

Install WPGraphQL on the WordPress site, then inspect the schema to confirm the names of post types, fields, filters and connection arguments. Custom fields are not automatically available merely because they exist in the WordPress editor; the relevant integration must expose them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Query a post by slug

const query = `
  query PostBySlug($slug: ID!) {
    posts(where: { name: $slug }) {
      nodes {
        title
        content
        excerpt
        uri
      }
    }
  }
`;

const response = await fetch(`${WORDPRESS_URL}/graphql`, {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: { 'content-type': 'application/json' },
  body: JSON.stringify({ query, variables: { slug } })
});

if (!response.ok) {
  throw error(response.status, 'GraphQL request failed');
}

const payload = await response.json();
if (payload.errors?.length) {
  throw error(502, 'GraphQL returned an error');
}

const post = payload.data?.posts?.nodes?.[0];
if (!post) {
  throw error(404, 'Post not found');
}
return { post };

Adapt the field names and filters to the installed schema. Some schemas use a URI lookup or a custom post-type connection rather than the exact filter shown above. Keep the query and its variables in a server-side module when the request could include privileged data.

Paginate with connections

For an archive, request a bounded number of nodes and retain the connection’s page information:

Pass endCursor as after for the next request and preserve that cursor in the route state. Connection pagination avoids guessing how many records remain and gives the UI an explicit hasNextPage value.

Map WordPress content to SvelteKit routes

WordPress and SvelteKit do not have to share identical URL structures, but the mapping must be deliberate. A post slug can become /blog/[slug]; a page URI can map to a catch-all route; and a custom post type can receive its own route group.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use route parameters as the lookup key

Read params.slug or a catch-all parameter, encode it before sending it to WordPress, and return a 404 when no record matches. Do not silently render the first result from a failed filter: that turns a missing URL into the wrong article.

Keep canonical URLs consistent

If WordPress stores a URI with nested segments, either query by that URI or maintain a deterministic translation to SvelteKit’s route. Generate canonical metadata from the resolved record, not from an unverified request string. When an editor changes a slug, decide whether the old URL redirects, becomes a 404, or remains an alias; that policy belongs in the route layer.

Separate content and presentation fields

Return a normalized object containing only what the page needs: identifiers, title, excerpt, body, image data, publication date, author information and taxonomy labels. This prevents components from spreading knowledge of REST nesting or GraphQL response envelopes throughout the application and makes an API migration less disruptive.

Choose SSR, prerendering or CSR by route

SvelteKit applications are server-rendered by default, then can transition to client-side navigation. You can still choose a different strategy for specific content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode Use it when Trade-offs
Server-side rendering (SSR) Content changes frequently, must be available in the initial HTML, or depends on request-time information. Each request can contact WordPress or a cache, so runtime hosting and cache design matter.
Prerendering Content can be rebuilt at deploy time and does not need request-specific data. Pages remain unchanged until another build or regeneration process runs.
Client-side rendering (CSR) The area is highly interactive and does not need its data in server HTML. The initial document contains less content for search engines and users without JavaScript, and the browser performs the data request.

Many sites combine these modes: SSR for article pages and metadata, prerendering for stable legal or about pages, and CSR for logged-in tools or interactive dashboards. Decide at the route level and test the resulting cache headers and HTML output.

Build a secure preview workflow

Editors need to see drafts and autosaves before publication, but a preview endpoint must not become a public back door into private WordPress data.

WPGraphQL preview requests

For WPGraphQL previews, send the X-GraphQL-Preview request header from an authenticated request. The authenticated identity must be allowed to edit the post. WPGraphQL overlays the newest autosave while preserving the post’s identity in the preview response, allowing the frontend to render the draft at the same route shape as the published item.

Keep the preview credential and any application password in a SvelteKit server-only module. A preview route should validate the editor session, construct the authenticated GraphQL request, and pass only the resulting content to the preview page.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent preview caching

Preview responses are private. Use Cache-Control: no-store, private and vary the response on X-GraphQL-Preview, as documented by WPGraphQL, so a draft cannot be served from a shared cache to another visitor. Also ensure your hosting layer does not override those headers with a public cache rule.

REST previews

REST does not give every project an identical preview mechanism. If protected REST data is required, implement authentication on a server-only route, verify the editor’s permission, and apply the same no-store policy. Never expose an application password or bearer token through a public environment variable, page data object or client bundle.

Handle images, HTML and metadata safely

Featured media

REST’s _embed option can include featured-media data; GraphQL can select the image fields exposed by its schema. Normalize the image URL, dimensions, alternative text and caption before passing them to an image component. Provide a fallback when a post has no featured image instead of assuming the embedded array exists.

Rendered HTML

WordPress’s rendered content may contain links, headings, shortcodes, embeds and inline attributes. Establish whether that markup is trusted in your publishing workflow. If it is not, sanitize it on the server with a policy that allows only the tags and attributes your components support. Do not concatenate untrusted values into raw HTML.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SEO fields

Generate the document title, description, canonical URL and social metadata from the normalized record. Keep metadata generation in the route so SSR and prerendered output contain it in the initial HTML. If an SEO plugin exposes additional fields, add them to the API query only after verifying their schema and fallback behavior.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Cache and refresh content deliberately

Headless delivery introduces two caches to reason about: the cache in front of WordPress and the cache or build output in front of SvelteKit. A prerendered page can remain stale even after WordPress changes, while an SSR page can still be stale if an upstream cache serves an old response.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
  • Use SSR when a request must reflect current WordPress data.
  • Use prerendering only for content that can wait for a rebuild.
  • Exclude authenticated previews from shared caches.
  • Record the cache policy alongside each route’s rendering choice.
  • When adding a CDN or host cache, verify that it respects private and no-store responses.

Do not claim that one rendering mode is universally fastest. Freshness, build time, runtime work and interactivity are separate requirements that should be measured for the actual site.

Deploy SvelteKit with the WordPress backend

  1. Select the adapter required by the host. A Node adapter is a documented choice for platforms that run SvelteKit as a Node application; other hosts may require a different adapter or an edge-oriented runtime.
  2. Use a repository-based build. Keep the SvelteKit source, lockfile and adapter configuration in version control so production builds are repeatable.
  3. Configure production variables. Set the WordPress origin and any server-only credentials in the host’s secret store, not in committed files.
  4. Test the deployed server route. Request a published post, an unknown slug, a paginated archive and a page with no featured image. Confirm status codes and generated HTML.
  5. Test preview isolation. Verify that an authenticated preview displays the autosave while an unauthenticated request receives only public content, and inspect response headers for private caching.
  6. Verify cache integration. If the host or WordPress platform offers an application cache, confirm that its invalidation and header rules match your SSR, prerender and preview decisions.

A managed host’s SvelteKit documentation may prescribe a particular adapter, repository workflow and WordPress cache plugin. Treat those instructions as platform-specific requirements and re-check them whenever the host or SvelteKit version changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the failures you will see first

The request returns 404 for a known post

  • Inspect the exact slug stored in WordPress, including capitalization and encoded characters.
  • Confirm that the request is using the correct post type endpoint or GraphQL connection.
  • Check whether the post is published; drafts and private posts will not appear in an anonymous request.
  • Log the final URL or GraphQL variables on the server, without logging credentials.

The response is 401 or 403

The content is protected or the authentication is missing or insufficient. Move the request to a server-only route, verify the editor’s permission for previews, and check that the credential is present in the deployment environment. Do not solve the problem by making private content public.

The page renders but fields are empty

Inspect the raw response and the normalization function. REST places rendered values in nested properties, while GraphQL field names depend on the installed schema. A custom field that exists in the editor may not be exposed to the API until its integration is configured.

Archive pages stop working after the first page

For REST, pass a valid page number and handle the endpoint’s out-of-range response. For GraphQL, pass the returned connection cursor as after and stop when hasNextPage is false. Keep pagination state in the URL or another durable route state rather than a component-only variable.

Draft content appears in public pages

Check whether preview headers or credentials are leaking into ordinary requests, and inspect shared-cache keys. Preview responses must be private and must vary on the preview header. Clear any cache that was populated before the policy was corrected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or embeds break after deployment

Check that the normalized media URL is absolute or is transformed for the deployed origin, that the frontend’s content-security policy permits the media host, and that the component handles missing dimensions or alternate media sizes.

Production readiness checklist

  • Every WordPress request checks the HTTP status and handles an empty result.
  • Unknown slugs produce a real 404 rather than a blank or unrelated page.
  • REST or GraphQL response shapes are normalized before component rendering.
  • Pagination is implemented for every collection route.
  • Rendered HTML follows a documented sanitization policy.
  • Private credentials exist only in server-side environment variables.
  • Preview requests validate identity and permissions and send private, no-store responses.
  • Each route has an explicit SSR, prerendering or CSR decision.
  • The deployment adapter matches the target host and SvelteKit version.
  • Production tests cover published, missing, paginated and preview states.

Putting the architecture together

Start with WordPress REST for a small site whose content maps cleanly to core resources. Add WPGraphQL when selective fields, nested relationships or cursor connections materially simplify the frontend. In either case, keep fetching at SvelteKit’s server boundary, return normalized data to components, and map slugs and URIs deliberately. Choose SSR, prerendering and CSR per route, then protect previews and credentials with server-only code and private cache headers. That combination gives editors a familiar WordPress workflow while SvelteKit controls the public experience and the deployment runtime.
