Start with reversible tests: close and restart the game, remove the Mods folder, delete localthumbcache.package, repair or verify the installation, and then test with a freshly generated Sims 4 folder. Back up your saves and Tray folder before resetting or deleting anything.
First, identify when the black screen appears
“Black screen” can describe a frozen game, a rendering problem, or a display-output issue. The timing and whether sound continues help determine where to start.

These are diagnostic categories, not guaranteed causes. The correct fix depends on your platform and whether the main menu, a new save or only one existing save can load.
Try these quick fixes first
- Wait briefly after an update. The first launch may take longer while the game loads or compiles content. If the process is clearly frozen, continue with the steps below rather than leaving it indefinitely.
- Check whether the game is on another display or behind another window. On Windows, press
Alt+Tab. If the game is visible but stuck in fullscreen, pressAlt+Enterto test windowed mode. - Disable overlays temporarily. Turn off the EA overlay, Steam overlay, Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or Radeon overlays, and screen-recording tools. These can interfere with rendering or focus.
- Close the game completely. Use Task Manager on Windows or Force Quit on Mac if it does not respond.
- Restart the computer or console. If the whole display is blank, check the monitor input, display cable and primary monitor before treating it as a Sims 4 problem.
- Install available game, launcher and system updates. Do not assume an older graphics workaround or menu label still applies to the current release.
Remove Mods and Custom Content safely
Mods and CC are a leading possibility when the black screen began after a Sims 4 update. EA warns that a mod which worked before an update can become incompatible and recommends removing game mods while troubleshooting. See EA’s guidance on mods and game updates.

Windows and Mac test
- Exit The Sims 4 and the EA app completely.
- Back up your Sims 4 user folder before changing files. On Windows it is usually
DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4; on macOS it isDocuments/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. - Move the entire
Modsfolder to the desktop. Move it rather than deleting it. - Delete
localthumbcache.packagefrom the Sims 4 folder. Do this only while the game is closed. - Launch the game and test the main menu and a new save.
Deleting localthumbcache.package does not delete your saves, households or builds. The game recreates the cache when needed.
If the game works without Mods, do not restore the entire folder at once. Check script mods and major gameplay mods for compatibility with your installed patch, then restore files in batches. Use a 50/50 process: restore roughly half, test, and keep narrowing the failing group. Start with UI mods, script mods, default replacements, sliders, custom traits, careers and content that changes worlds or loading screens.
Do not save over an important modded save while required content is missing unless you have a backup. “Mods enabled” in the game settings only means the feature is allowed; it does not prove that every installed file is current. Mod managers and fixer tools are not guaranteed to identify every conflict.
Repair or verify the game installation
EA app
- Open the EA app and go to Library.
- Select The Sims 4.
- Open Manage.
- Choose Repair.
EA’s PC troubleshooting guide recommends this process. If the EA app itself is malfunctioning, use its recovery or help option to clear the EA app cache, restart the app, sign out and back in, and try Repair again. Disable overlays during the test. Temporarily testing security software can help identify blocking, but restore protection afterward and do not permanently disable it as a first-line fix.
Steam
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click The Sims 4 and select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
A Steam installation may still start through the EA app, so both Steam verification and EA app repair can be relevant. Repairing installation files does not repair a broken mod, save, Options.ini file or other content in your Documents folder.

Reset the Sims 4 user folder without deleting your saves
Resetting the user folder is one of the clearest ways to separate game-file problems from damaged settings, saves, mods and CC. EA explains the procedure in its backup and reset guide.
- Exit the game and launcher.
- Copy
DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4on Windows, orDocuments/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4on Mac, to another location. - Rename the original folder to something such as
The Sims 4_backup. Renaming is safer than deleting. - Start the game. It should create a new, clean Sims 4 folder.
- Test the main menu and a new save before copying anything back.
Interpret the result
- The clean folder also produces a black screen: investigate the installation, graphics system, launcher, operating system, display or a current game issue.
- The clean folder works: the original folder contains the cause.
- It fails after saves return: investigate saves or a particular household.
- It fails after Mods return: investigate mods and CC.
- It fails after
Options.inireturns: a graphics or display setting is likely involved. - It works only offline: investigate EA app connectivity, cloud syncing or account-related behavior.
Restore files selectively and keep the untouched backup. A sensible order is saves, Tray, screenshots and videos, settings, then Mods and CC last. If restoring one group brings the problem back, you have narrowed the search without destroying the original data.

Use the clean folder for this test so old display settings do not immediately return.
- Try windowed mode and a lower resolution.
- If you reach the menu, open Game Options → Graphics and lower graphics quality temporarily.
- Check the monitor input, primary display and multi-monitor arrangement.
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer or computer manufacturer.
- Temporarily disable advanced rendering features, particularly on a laptop or hybrid-graphics system.
On supported Windows systems, DirectX 9 can be tested as a conditional fallback if the game exposes that option. An EA technical-issues thread also documents adding -dx9 to Steam launch options for some systems. This is a troubleshooting experiment, not a universal fix or a permanent requirement. Hardware, platform and game-version support vary, and recent EA documentation has also discussed DirectX 11 and launch arguments. Do not use Windows DirectX arguments on Mac.
Check OneDrive, iCloud and file permissions
The Sims 4 user folder lives in Documents, which may be managed by OneDrive on Windows or iCloud and another sync service on Mac. EA’s troubleshooting guidance suggests pausing OneDrive syncing as a test.

- Check whether the Sims 4 folder is actually inside OneDrive.
- Look for files marked online-only.
- Check whether syncing restores an old
Options.ini, Mods folder or save after you reset it. - Confirm that the game can write to Documents.
- Check whether antivirus ransomware protection or controlled-folder access is blocking the EA app or game.
Pause syncing, make a backup, rename the Sims 4 folder and launch again. If that solves the problem, resume syncing only after confirming the local folder is healthy. Avoid permanently disabling security protection without a specific diagnosis.
If only one save or household causes the black screen
If the main menu works but one save fails, a repaired installation is unlikely to be the whole answer. Create a new test save and load a different household. If those work:
- Use Save As instead of overwriting the affected save.
- Test the affected household in a new slot if the game allows it.
- Remove recently added lots, Sims, CC or mods from a copy, not the original.
- Restore an older save backup if one exists.
- Avoid repeatedly loading and saving a potentially damaged file.
A successful clean-folder launch proves only that the basic game can start; it does not prove that every existing save is healthy.
Mac-specific checks
Confirm your Mac model, macOS version and current Sims 4 requirements before troubleshooting. EA’s Sims 4 FAQ includes Mac graphics requirements and Metal-support information.
- Quit The Sims 4 and the EA app completely, then restart the Mac.
- Reset the Sims 4 folder using the backup-and-rename procedure above.
- Check whether iCloud or another service manages Documents.
- Confirm that the EA app and game can access Documents.
- Test windowed mode and lower graphics settings.
- Update macOS and relevant system software where applicable.
PlayStation and Xbox fixes
PC file instructions do not apply to consoles. Do not look for Mods, localthumbcache.package or Options.ini, and do not try EA app repair.

- Restart the console.
- Check Sims 4 and system updates.
- Test another save or start a new game.
- Check available storage.
- Use the console’s supported cache and saved-data management tools cautiously.
- Back up saves through the platform’s supported cloud or USB procedure where available.
- Reinstall only after these lower-risk checks.

If the black screen remains with a clean user folder, no Mods or CC, verified files and updated graphics software, check the latest Sims 4 patch notes, EA Help and the EA Forums technical-issue and bug-report sections. A problem that began immediately after an update and affects multiple players may indicate a wider issue, but a single forum post or Reddit comment does not prove a confirmed EA bug.
When to contact EA
Escalate after documenting the tests you have completed. Include:
- Platform and operating system
- EA app or Steam
- Game version and date of the last update
- Whether Mods or CC are installed
- Whether a clean Sims 4 folder launches
- Whether a new save works
- GPU model and driver version on PC
- Whether every save or only one is affected
- Screenshots or video when the screen is not completely blank
- Relevant

Reinstalling is a last resort, not the first step. It can replace installation files while leaving a damaged Documents folder, save, mod collection or cloud-sync conflict untouched.

Will deleting localthumbcache.package delete my saves?
No. With the game closed, deleting this cache file does not delete saves, households or Tray content. The game recreates the cache.

Will removing Mods delete custom content permanently?
No, if you move the Mods folder to a safe location rather than deleting it. Restore files in tested batches after checking compatibility.
Why did repairing the game not fix the black screen?
Repair affects installation files. It does not fix incompatible mods, damaged saves, graphics settings in Options.ini, cloud syncing or Documents-folder permissions.
Should I use -dx9?
Only as a conditional Windows troubleshooting test when appropriate for your hardware and game setup. It is not a guaranteed fix and should not be used on Mac.

No. Console editions do not use the PC/Mac Mods folder, cache file or EA app repair process. Use platform-specific restart, update, saved-data and reinstall tools.
Does reinstalling The Sims 4 delete saves?
Installation files and user files are separate, but back up the Sims 4 folder before reinstalling. A reinstall may also leave the damaged user folder untouched.
How do I restore saves after resetting the folder?
Close the game, copy the backed-up saves folder into the newly created Sims 4 folder, and test one save at a time. Keep the original backup until everything is confirmed.
